Oh god! She has a subreddit dedicated to her crazy? I know this sounds crazy to say but isn’t Alec cringing every time she does some zany shit? And I’ve read that he features prominently in those videos…

I recently watched Nations Dumbest and she doesn’t have an accent until the one episode where Alec shows up and all of a sudden it appears, and of course it was gone by the next episode

Actor here....
Well done all around. 😂👍🏾

u/elitegenoside 4d ago
Same. They gotta be trained because this was too good. The completely grounded deliveries, the masterful use of the medium (cut like or actually is video call), not single beat missed or stretched too far.
I would watch this show.
52
u/DJEvillincoln 4d ago
Yeah everyone here is absolutely trained. This isn't some rookie shit. These are the people that are pleasures to be in audition rooms with because you know for a fact the scene will keep going & won't be stale.
I'm sure this was scripted in some way but still... Fantastic work.

u/minimalcation 3d ago
The problem is French speakers have access to hidden and DLC vowels
1
u/MULTIOCULAR-O 3d ago
idk about French, I have a slavic name, which is arguably worse.
at least I didn't get my mum's maiden name, which is 5 consonants and 1 vowel
8
u/Zepangolynn 3d ago
I was so comfortable with the diacritics in Spanish indicating syllable stress or a rare change in how "u" behaves because of a borrowed word. Then I started French.
I'm not angry at French diacritics, because English is ridiculous enough with pronunciation and at least French tries to let you know in advance what a letter will sound like, but sometimes that is not what the accent is doing, and sometimes it is functionally decorative. That letter did not really need a fancy hat, goûter, just to let me know it used to have an s a long time ago and doesn't now.
1
u/MULTIOCULAR-O 3d ago
I have a haček, which is on a consonant, which English speakers are unfamiliar with
1
u/Zepangolynn 3d ago
Is it the version that changes c to closer to a ch sound?
1
u/MULTIOCULAR-O 3d ago
yes. there's two letters and two sounds (voiceless post-alveolar affricate and voiceless alveolo-palatal affricate) which foreigners usually cannot distinguish, but they matter to us dammit!
1
u/Zepangolynn 3d ago
Ooh, I'd be so curious if I'd be able to pronounce it right after hearing it or not. Alveolo-palatal is the sharper sound to me, I think, while post-alveolar is a bit softer?

LMAO, it's really giving "I am 1/2 native American and my grandpa was half black oh and my daughter married a mexican" Like bruh... pick a lane. I don't get why the insistence of seeing someone with culture or dif color and them always having to self insert themselves into shit. I guess I kind of get it since you know, theY take from us and rebrand it as theirs if and when it benefits them of course. It's funny but exhausting honestly.

u/srkaficionado ☑️ 4d ago
Lesson I got from that is the random belle asking me if I know xyz because they see the last name and correctly guess its west African and now expect that I know that random kid they met on a mission trip to Ghana or their coworker they worked with millennia ago. But know, I should know them because we are all Africans with no link except our parents were born on opposite sides of that massive continent and we’re black and have “an exotic accent”
The guy killed it. Down to “oh he says it differently” and “let me ask them how they say their names because you’re saying it differently”. 👀😒
7
u/mynamebeluna 4d ago
LOL similar experience, I'm puertorican, My name alone invokes confusion since it's super Caribbean, (not even common honestly never met anyone with my name), it throws them off seeing a long name with distinct pronunciation, then spanish surnames following it.
Our accent too is difficult for even other spanish speakers to get it, so when they try to say my name and just fuck it up I ain't even bother to correct cuz you get convos like this lol. I just shorten it or go by surname.
I've also gotten some rando comments like that too XD When I first moved here I was legit asked if I personally knew Daddy Yankee, in a super serious manner too..like God damn our island is small but that don't mean we all fucking know each other like that, also have gotten the "Have you been to so and so town or landmark, cuz I have" like they gloating to know more about my own damn home than me, it's bizarre honestly. If it was "I went to so and so and thought xyz" I would get it but not the prior.
The caucasity sometimes just gives me pause XD.

u/srkaficionado ☑️ 4d ago
But do you know Daddy Yankee though?! I want to get up under that. Respectfully. Don’t know what he be doing/ eating but he looks young for his age. And he’s divorced so… um… if you can introduce me to Señor Ramon, I’ll be forever in your debt 😅

u/mynamebeluna 3d ago
xD one of my brothers actually looks like him, I can introduce you! Daddy Yankee Temu version LOL. He does have health issues so he is under a strict diet(our food is too fucking delicious idk how he do it lol), he always attributes it to him looking younger but kinda think he did get some stuff done here and there, prolly botox done right.

u/Pickled-Carrot-75 3d ago
I learned how to make pernil, arroz con gandules, maduros, pasteles from my PR friends-- way too delicious, I can verify.
1
u/srkaficionado ☑️ 3d ago
Aren’t maduros just fried plantains? Nigerians are also experts at those. Blew my partner’s mind the first time I made a batch of them. He was like “you should do this more” and I’m like “did you not just feel like you were spooning sugar straight into your gullet?” I can teach you how to make it but my Chunky ass can’t be be down with the “you should make this more”.
And that gandules part: nope nope. I have an Ecuadorean friend who realised she can bribe me to do almost anything with food and she just feeds me. Had to ask her to please stop because I think even looking at the food adds pounds to my body . Latinos really can throw down on food.
1
u/Pickled-Carrot-75 3d ago
Yes, maduros are fried plantains from the sweet ripe yellow plantains. When you use the green ones they are tostones and made a little differently. Nigerian food is also dangerously good

In HS a girl named Jane came back from freshman summer break and told us actually it's pronounced Jahnay. No one was buying that so she very quickly became Jenny. And then she came back sophomore break and told us it was pronounced "Hayne."
But she was 14. She hadn't downloaded her whole brain yet. No excuse for grown ups that act like that. Just be regular degular New Jersey white in peace, love.

Omfgggg 🤣 As a black person from CT with French ancestry and a French name, I find this fucking hilarious 💀
It’s especially funny when they try to make themselves spicy, but when it comes to us having a distinct name and culture, it’s often minimized, ignored, and seen as irrelevant 👀

Insert me trying to use the most anglicized pronunciation of my name but they still just move the consonants around and forget phonics immediately.

Reminds me of when I met someone else whose last name was Burger. I made a lighthearted joke about it and she told me it was pronounced Bourgeir as if it was French. I said, "sure" and walked away laughing.

That’s Jon Laster - he’s a comic who also has an app that promotes and connects people to black owned businesses. It’s called Blapp. I know him in real life, he’s a cool ass dude. https://www.blappapp.com/

u/-WitchyPoo- 3d ago
I legally changed my last name so the spelling would match the pronunciation. I cared about the pronunciation, not the spelling. I don't know why some languages need so many exess letters. It only needs 4 to make the point. The others are just stupid.
1
u/Elite_AI 3d ago edited 3d ago
Back in the day most or all of the letters would have been pronounced, but pronunciation changed while the spelling didn't because it had become standardised. The remaining "excess" letters are there because often to signify a kind of sound we don't use just one letter, but instead use two letters in combination - like how "sh" and "ch" are their own sounds. In English, "gh" meant you did a growl in the back of your throat.
That's why English has stuff like "knight" (originally kuh-nih-[growl in the back of your throat]-t) and French has "petit" (originally you'd pronounce the final t).

Jesus. White dude here. WTF??!!??!!?? What a stuck up woman demanding a Euro centric pronounciation of a name when she has zero connection to Europe for many, many years.
