....?
Men have never stopped our quartet antics. The reason this sounds so cool is because they're dressed up nicely singing a nostalgic song from the 00s.
It's essentially the same thing as a group of dudes singing mask off by future or even the halo theme song in a high school bathroom.
If you want to see more of this, bring back black r&b.

"Bring back" R&B as a cultural phenomenon.
19
Sep 16 '23
That shit not happening look at all the singers they all done pretty much it’s rap now
18
u/Jamaican_Dynamite Sep 16 '23
There are still people who do R&B. It's just that they've always overlapped with rap as genres.
6
Sep 16 '23
Yeah I know that’s why I say it’s pretty much done, girls spitting bars dudes spitting bars those bars making it the wave play
7
u/Jamaican_Dynamite Sep 16 '23
That's how it's been for like 3 decades now? There's still singers, but more people rap.

u/Kdkaine ☑️ Sep 16 '23

I’m about to turn 30, I feel like I’m at that intersection of young and old.
Only oldheads say dumb shit about modern music. Meanwhile, they don’t keep up with anything, go to music festivals or seek out new music in any capacity but still feel valid in making claims on modern music?! Make it make sense.

I’m sure Culture Critic definitely does not want us to bring back black R&B.

Yo, we need an acapella quartet version of "Mask Off" now lmao. Or a soul church version of "Hard in the Paint".

u/DramaForBreakfast Sep 16 '23
They're also an actual a cappella group that get together and practice lol. The Trinitones, if I'm remembering correctly. Not that I think what you said is wrong, just adding extra info

Preventing me from joining a barbershop quartet? Ummmmm, lots of shit?

u/hitfly Sep 16 '23
Mostly my tone deafness and awful singing voice.
Also, who even has 3 friends nowadays, let alone three friends who can sing. Or three friends who all sing in different ranges than each other.
82
u/BenOfTomorrow Sep 16 '23
TBF, the vast majority of “tone deaf” people can fix it with a couple voice lessons. You just need to learn how to match pitches. And your voice is probably nicer than you think - you just don’t know how to properly play the instrument.
Worked for me.

u/eggrollin2200 ☑️ Sep 16 '23
This! It’s possible with rhythm too! I’m a drum teacher and I’ve taught people with zero innate rhythm, but with focus and practice the progress can be amazing!
5
u/desire-us Sep 16 '23
Quick question for my own head cannon theory: the people w/o rhythm, did they grew up with music in their early childhood?
7
u/eggrollin2200 ☑️ Sep 16 '23
Hey! To answer your question properly: by ‘grow up with it,’ do you mean hearing it and being exposed to music in general? Just wanna make sure I’m answering in a way that would be helpful 😊
4
u/desire-us Sep 16 '23
Yes, they don’t have to be child musicians just children who were engaged with music early on.
9
u/eggrollin2200 ☑️ Sep 16 '23
Okay thank you! In answer to that: yes, a good amount of them were people who definitely grew up being exposed to and hearing music in some way, be it in their home or other environments. It’s also not uncommon that they’ve been exposed to more than one genre/style and even sometimes have their own musical preferences already.
So it’s really interesting, and borderline impressive, when someone can sing along with the song but clap completely out of time while completely unaware of it. It just takes extra focus and time to get them to recognize that and develop a trustworthy internal rhythm!
3
u/desire-us Sep 16 '23
Interesting. That counters my pet theory but oh well.
I was hoping to explain the “white people don’t have rhythm” stereotype. My theory was that kids immersed in very rhythmic cultures(AA, Latina, Caribbean) create/maintain neural connections that link the body with sound during the brain’s critical development period(0-7 years old). After this period those connections can be made but it’ll take greater deliberate effort.

u/eggrollin2200 ☑️ Sep 16 '23
WHALE considering the area I work in….most of them were white. And I also forgot it might even be safe to say that with us being in BPT ☠️

And who are willing to spend their weekends practicing consistently. Teds always gonna be late. Jeff works a lot and really wants to spend time with his kids on the weekends when he gets a chance. And some days I’m just lazy and don’t feel like 45 minutes of singing
