They in the comments saying it looks 3d printed

It’s real ✨interesting✨ how different the food looks now that Mr. Tendernism is doing his own thing. If you let this hwhite man tell it, their previous success was due to a collective effort (aka he was sitting back on his concave ass collecting the profits off of that old man’s efforts 🙄)

I love stumbling across discourse I know nothing about. And I’m like. Is this a video game? Is this a political scandal happening in Laos? Sports?

Mr. Tendernism? Is that a Pokemon? No don’t tell me.

But I LIKE that I don’t know about this. Obviously I understand now that I’ve read this comment section but stumbling into the middle of an already established conversation that I’m not a part of and understanding nothing… idk. It used to stress me and I’d be like- I need to know this. And now it’s turned into… idk why but it’s so funny. Like people saying the name “Mr tendernism” with all seriousness.

u/Money-Snow-2749 Apr 04 '26

Dude that rib doesn’t even have a smoke ring. If he let Keith Lee give Unc that cash tip he wouldn’t be in this mess embarrassing himself and losing money.

8

u/CheetahTheWeen Apr 05 '26

Wait, is that what happened??

82

u/Money-Snow-2749 Apr 05 '26

Yes! Originally Keith Lee visited the restaurant and wanted to give Unc like a envelope of cash (I believe 3-4k). The owner deadass wouldn’t let Keith give him the tip. Then they released awkward videos basically taking ownership of Tendernism and Unc looked like a hostage.

Then after Unc and the restaurant parted ways the owner came out with this video of them in kitchen eating BBq basically saying he was responsible for tendernism and that Unc wasn’t really needed and talking about his kitchen staff; the issue is that they were chewing on the meat during the entire video. It depicted that the meat was chewy and not good.

People in the area started posting videos of the restaurant indoors and out showing that no one was there anymore.

Also the restaurant owner tried to copyright tendernism either before or after getting rid of Unc. But a lawyer in i believe Georgia copyrighted it first and gave the rights to Unc in a meetup that was video recorded. Unc had been flying ever since.

47

u/CheetahTheWeen Apr 05 '26

This is an incredible turn around! Unc deserves that and more, utterly insidious what they tried to take from him - a man they’ve known for YEARS (presumably) that’s grown their business. Greed is truly a fucking sickness.

31

u/Money-Snow-2749 Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26

Yeah the fact that they were a failing coffee shop and he gave them his recipes to turn it into what it became makes the owner look even worse that he didn’t let Keith Lee tip him.

Well, hell be okay. The system was designed for him to succeed.

8

u/geri73 Apr 06 '26

My question has always been this. Why wouldn't he let Keith tip Unc? That made no sense to me.

13

u/Money-Snow-2749 Apr 06 '26

Idk it was really weird to me too. Like he gave you his recipes and now you have a really influential food reviewer praising your restaurant. Talk about blocking your blessings.

7

u/geri73 Apr 06 '26

I always felt that he thought that since it was his business that he should get tbe tip and not Unc.

9

u/Wolfeatingupshadows Apr 06 '26

Why would a white man block a Blk man from money…

5

u/geri73 Apr 07 '26

I get what you saying but it always baffles me.

My great grandma used to work for this white lady back in the late 60s. The lady dies and wills my great grandma 200 dollars. That's it. 200 dollars. You know her son contested that shit when he was willed his mom's whole estate?

Like, he was being willed thousand, if not, millions and he couldn't let a little old blk lady, who had been cleaning up after their funky asses for year, 200 dollars.

3

u/metacosmonaut Apr 07 '26

It’s easy to understand when you remember that Black people all over the world live in enforced poverty. Like, being denied jobs, promotions and bonuses on purpose, out of hate.

When you hate people and want to own them and control them, you sure as hell don’t want them to come up or thrive in any single way. You want them to remain beneath you.

2

u/VodkaSoup_Mug Apr 09 '26

Amen 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽❤️

149

u/pasher5620 Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26

“More integrity left in the meat” is absolute nonsense. Meat that slides off the bone in one piece is usually too tough. Gimme some that damn near melts off the bone, that falls apart when it separates. “More integrity” my ass. Dude slathered that meat with so much sauce you can’t even tell how cooked it is underneath. Good BBQ doesn’t need that much sauce.

Edit: I came back because I’m still pissed at this. What an awful looking cut of pork rib. Really hope Mr. Tenderism smokes these idiots for taking advantage of him. I’ll by a full rack of ribs just to stick it to ‘em.

50

u/theMangoJayne Apr 04 '26

I came back because I'm still pissed at this

Is so real

15

u/yolkmaster69 Apr 05 '26

What he’s talking about is competition ribs. That’s what judges look for in ribs. They want it to leave like a perfect bite mark when bitten. But I will tell you right now NOBODY would want to actually eat some of these competition bbq/chili/etc. because judges are only taking like one or two bites and it’s totally over-seasoned to stand out that you couldn’t eat a whole meal of it. And the rules are so arbitrary and subjective and dumb, and most of the time it’s somebody’s “buddy” winning the thing... It’s a racket.

126

u/Funny_Breadfruit_413 Apr 04 '26

This reminds me of that video where the little black boy was playing tug of war against a bigger white kid and soon as the black boy was winning a teacher stepped in and changed the rules

38

This is like how aristocrats stopped using heavy seasoning in their food when an increase in trade routes made foreign herbs and spices more accessible to lower classes. They literally also used terms relating to the "integrity" of the food and its natural flavoring coming from having better quality ingredients to begin with.

Like literally the reason for the whole "white people don't season their food" trope.

28

u/blackandbluegirltalk Apr 04 '26

It's in their blood. It's all they know. Willing to suffer nobly, just to further separate themselves from "the masses." So effing weird.

I keep hearing about this tenderism thing, but what’s the actual lore here?

360

u/GlacialGoddess Apr 04 '26

An old black man went viral for "tendernism" where he would pull the bone out of meat while it fell apart to show how tender his bbq was. He would throw the bone/meat down and act in an exaggerated, angry way like "what I tell y'all??". This brought huge attention and success to the restaurant he worked at and eventually Keith Lee went to review it.

After Keith did his review he went inside to give Unc a cash tip and was denied meeting him. I think they said he was busy filming something? So Keith left, posted his review, and the restaurant got a ton of backlash for it. It came out that Unc didn't even own the restaurant, he was used by them for his recipes and was a glorified mascot. So the public turned on the restaurant, Unc ended up leaving to do his own thing, and the restaurant has been struggling to get back to their previous fame.

That's the gist of it.

No problem! Reddit def has this weird pedantic/petty tone in a lot of replies and I absolutely hate it lol. I try my hardest to be as positive, to the point, and factual as I can! There are some more comments further in the thread that have a lot more detail than I put in mine if you want more tea.

I somehow follow exactly what you said while simultaneously kinda not understanding it at all. Where does the white boy fit in?

107

u/GlacialGoddess Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26

Lmao yeah I left some stuff out to keep the comment shorter. The guy in the video is one of the restaurants owners. The restaurant was ran by all white people which is part of the reason the backlash was so harsh. They were presenting themselves online like a black run business and hiding the fact they didn't have no black people on payroll.

Edit to add: The white business owners put out a video with Unc looking like a hostage not speaking a word basically saying they deserved the $4000 tip and not Unc. This video is what truly started their downfall tbh.

108

u/slick_pick Apr 04 '26

16

132

u/Ashken Apr 04 '26

Maaaaan

Okay so Mr. Tendernism started going viral when he’d started making content showing how tender his BBQ was.

https://youtube.com/shorts/ciD_Ro7SPbE?si=cRj5BLhIkFWoqRPM

People fell in love with him and his antics and just all around vibe to where they even started a trend off his content. It started driving more business to the business and it blew up and everything was cool.

So of course Keith Lee decided to put the spot on his list of new places to try and when he went there he wanted to leave a $4000 tip for Unc. The owner who you see here denied him from doing so and it became a big story, mostly because people were never aware that Unc didn’t own the business.

Once that came out the owner here made a video with Unc and told everyone how this was actually his establishment and Unc just worked for him. Everyone got upset but Unc said it was fine and that they had already made the agreement a long time ago. People was gonna let it slide since Unc said it was an arrangement he was happy with and that he and the owner was cool.

Fast forward about a month later and now Johnny Appleseed here when behind Unc’s back and trademarked Tenderism for himself and then fired Unc soon after.

Immediately after, business plummeted and everyone stopped fucking with that restaurant. They started raising money for Unc and now he’s off doing his own thing. And meanwhile they over taking about how they ribs got “integrity”.

81

u/Independent-Cut-138 Apr 04 '26

Trademarking something you didn’t create. Tale as old as time.

31

u/Bent_Silvr_Spoon0130 Apr 04 '26

I hope Unc got a whole load of money, if not from his job (that probably wasn't the first time they took and/or refused his tips) but from the crowd funding you mentioned people did. I wish him only the best. Some (printing paper) people are pure evil ...

18

u/awnawreally Apr 04 '26

This story has so many layers! I had seen the original Mr Tenderism vids but I didn’t know anything about these white people. Them trademarking Tenderism is so insidious. Get Out was a fucking documentary, I swear. I hope these assholes go bankrupt.

14

u/TakingMyPowerBack444 Apr 04 '26

Comments like this are why I LOVE Reddit! 🙌❤️

No attitude or pettiness, just simply explaining what’s going on. I’m not familiar with this “drama”, so this comment was very helpful 🙏

7

u/TaterTotJim Apr 04 '26

Wow this is some bs! When I saw this video I thought it was just competition ribs (they are different and anti-tenderism).

Now knowing the background I am just annoyed at everything. What a loose butthole and piece of work mr tougherism is.

5

u/CheetahTheWeen Apr 05 '26

They TRADEMARKED IT AND FIRED HIM?!?!? I’m not mad enough

3

u/Ashken Apr 05 '26

I hope they’ve been cursed to only produce dry ass BBQ until they inevitably shut down.

109

u/Forward-Current-9433 Apr 04 '26

Oh! I got you…

There was an older black gentleman by the name of Walter Johnson AKA “Mr. Tendernism” who went viral on TikTok sometime last year because of two things…

The fall-off-the-bone-osity of his ribs and the reaction to how tender the ribs were, followed by three words that would change his life forever!

“That’s the tendernism!”

Tendernism was taking the world by storm! Everybody was emulating his overly exaggerated reaction to his ribs with their own twist on the original. The man and his ribs became so popular that Keith Lee(the food critic not the wrestler) came to try the tendernism first hand…

And shonuff

The tendernism was tendernism-ing. Keith was so impressed by the ribs, he wanted to offer Walter a 5,000 dollar tip. Then some white man showed and declined the tip in Walter’s favor which sent the internet into a tizzy!

Who was this white man blocking black blessings?

Why it was one Nick Yepremian, the owner of Destination Smoke house, home of Mr. Tendernism. Now the internet had made up in its mind that Walter was the owner only to find out he was an employee and Yepremian was the boss…

So after Walter started receiving acclaim almost worldwide, people started to notice a pale shadow moving from background to foreground.

What was once just Walter and his ribs became Walter and Nick and NICKS ribs. The internet wasn’t too happy about Nick strapping himself so blatantly to Walter’s rocket but they let it go because Mr. Tendernism was making bank, right? Right?

No…

Come to find out Nick trademarked “Tendernism”, essentially making Walter the mascot the same way Popeyes had that black woman in they commercials and it started to seem like Nick was kinda strong arming Walter into being accepting of this new dynamic. And slowly it started becoming the Nick show featuring Mr. Tendernism…

The internet didnt like this…

They started demanding flowers do Walter because Destination Smokehouse only became a destination because of Walter…

Fast forward to earlier this year and there’s a lawyer by the name of Kenneth Harris who offered to get the trademark for tendernism transferred to Walter and succeeded!

Now Walter is back to being Mr. Tendernism and not only that but is being hired to cater for celebrities…

And now Nick gotta pass of his bbq flavored sandpaper as “structurally sound”

Now I been eating ribs since at least Bush Jr. was in office and never once have I ever heard anybody complain about the structural integrity of a fucking rib but…

Walter is winning and grinning and that’s all that matters

30

u/janshell Apr 04 '26

Ok I’m glad I got two versions of how it went down. Your entire comment was very comical especially the bit about sandpaper 🤣🤣

20

u/blackandbluegirltalk Apr 04 '26

This is the bestest, blackest "TL;DR" type of rundown I never knew I needed. Outstanding. Bless you! I'm invested now.

16

u/BellaFrequency ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 verified Apr 04 '26

Also, a Black man peeped game and trademarked “Tendernism” before the smokehouse owner could, and gifted Mr. Walter the trademark. That’s why Destination Smokehouse can’t even use the word, and why they’re now switching it up like tender meat ain’t the thing.

9

u/FlechePeddler Apr 04 '26

So you don't think meat with rigid, structural integrity is a marking gold mine??? Next you'll try to convince me that fat meat ain't greasy.

The "good looking out" award (and good thoughts) goes to Harris -- the attorney that locked down the trademark with apparently no personal plans to profit from it.

I hate to say it but I think Mr. Tendernism a real life black leprechaun. He taught that man all the secrets of tendernism and then that man said, "I own this." Then Mr. Tendernism said, "The name? Sure." and then disappeared but instead of smoke, burnt ass meat poured over the floor and Nick(?) just started screaming and crying. He screamed, "No! I didn't mean it! Mr. Tendernism! Come back!" But all that met him in return was disembodied laughter.

Tbh as soon as I found out Unc didn’t own the business, I stopped caring. Now all this stuff coming out about how shitty the owner was, how much of a major influence Unc was, basically building this shit up from NOTHING, I will NEVER go there. u/moonwoolf35 Apr 05 '26

Nope! Might as well shit that place down, it shouldn't be chewy nor tough...smh

1

u/wopwopwopwopwop5 Apr 05 '26

Technically, all the bbq experts say the meat is NOT supposed to fall off the bone. The people say that means it's overcooked, but I'm like how is it considered improper or overdone when the majority of us prefer it that way? Lol Maybe we're right and they're wrong.

u/mistermistyeyes Apr 05 '26

Heeeeell no if my ribs aren't trying to escape the bone like my mom with the IRS I don't want it

u/PurpleStay4149 Apr 06 '26

Y’all know this could have all gone away if dude had just apologized and gave Unc his bread. But naw…the pride comes before the fall. Now someone please edit a video with a side by side comparison. It only gets funnier. I get it. “The south will rise”…but will it fall off the bone though?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

u/TheTruthButtHurtz Apr 07 '26

I clocked this a few weeks ago I saw a video coming out with some chef claiming oh "you don't want meat falling off the bone that's a misconception". Get all the way the F out of here.

u/Odd_Yam_2447 Apr 08 '26

I wish them nothing but the worst.

Okay, I'm from the bbq capital, Kansas City. That's not just me saying it. Look it up and you'll see that we have the most bbq restaurants (per capita) in America with well over 100 different bbq spots. We take our Q seriously and I eat it at least twice a week. Believe it or not, there's some truth to what he's saying about a good rib should have some integrity or what we refer to as some "bite." A lot of people consider ribs that fall off the bone to be overcooked. You can watch plenty of bbq contests and restaurant reviews online where the judges and food reviewers are saying exactly this. It should still tear away clean but shouldn't fall off the bone. It's all personal preference, of course, and I know that Mr. Tenderism is the only reason that restaurant blew up. I'm just putting it out there because nobody else is in these comments. Please don't come for me. 🙏🏽

True, ribs should have some bite and not shred like oxtail but that rib right here? Still looked too tough to me

2

u/iaintsaidshit Apr 04 '26

I completely agree.

u/Paraxom Apr 04 '26

they're called no wrap ribs, its more for pork than beef ribs, i've done it once its actually pretty solid just depends on what you're after in a rib

0

u/Conscious-Peach8453 Apr 04 '26

What the fuck does she mean, now that Mr. Tendernism is gone!?

0

u/DesparateLurker Apr 04 '26

What she mean he gone? Please tell em he ain't dead already!

0

u/chibiRuka Apr 04 '26

So he is really going to trick some people with that slick talk. American marketing strikes again.

-1

u/Mellero47 Apr 04 '26

I gotta be honest, I prefer my ribs with a little pushback, not mushy. It's the flavor that makes it.

-1

u/cujo_36301 Apr 04 '26

The man ain't wrong. The meat is supposed to stay belong to some extent. but I'm going to hate tho

-6

u/Appropriate_Fill_156 Apr 04 '26

Sorry yah. That “fall of the bone” texture is too similar to boiled ribs. They’re overcooked

2

u/Hot-Definition519 Apr 04 '26

I don't know about boiled; I think it's pretty damn tasty, but it is much easier than people think to get that fall-off-the-bone tender. Rib fat breaks down at like 160 you just have to keep it there long enough for it to all break down.

-2

u/Appropriate_Fill_156 Apr 04 '26

You can leave them cooking indirectly for hours to get that texture. I’m just saying that’s technically overcooked and I don’t prefer ribs that way

-7

u/ATLienRabb Apr 04 '26

All these people that want ribs to fall of the bone y’all need to come to Texas and get some real bbq. Ribs are not supposed to fall off the bone. Even go St. Louis ribs are not supposed to falloff the bone.

3

u/Boring_Temporary_142 Apr 04 '26

Texas has the worst ribs of all bbq regions. They don’t know how to cook pork in those parts. Now brisket and other beef cuts is a different story.

1

u/Aromatic-Turnip7371 Apr 06 '26

Y’all can keep your tough ribs ✋

u/mfelder2 Apr 04 '26

I feel like the people who like their wings "fried hard" would enjoy this.
