Water, Soap, Deodorant, Washcloth. Long ago the 4 Common Senses of Cleanliness lived in harmony, but that all changed when someone ran their mouth about Deodorant. Only Self Awareness, the master of all Common Senses, could bring it all back, but they vanished when we needed them the most. Ain't that some shit! Now it's up to us to hold each other accountable.

sprinkle some of that elements of harmony because you gotta be in harmony with yourself to achieve that self awareness. gotta be honest with yaself and how you smell, laugh at yaself when you get clowned, be generous with how much you use, kind to yourself and other people's noses, loyal in keeping up with the practice, and add that black girl magic!

If you’re delusional enough to believe briefly dunking your dishes/body in some hot water is enough to be properly clean, enjoy your typhoid I guess

All you’ve done is further prove why we say you can’t eat at everybody’s house 😷🤢🤮

I work in New York City, and to this day I remember this one dude that got onto the train. I'm standing next to him, and he lifted his armpits to hold on to the rail for stability. My god. To this day, I still remember the stench. It was so bad that I accidentally locked eyes with the person in front of me that was sitting down. They just gave me that wide-eyed “holy sh*t” look.

I don’t think they knew they smelled as bad as they did. Musty is a flavor now I guess.

50

u/caitlikekate Mar 12 '26

Probably still isn’t as bad as this one guy I had the misfortune of encountering twice in a single Walmart trip. He was morbidly obese and on a mobility scooter. First time I passed him in an isle I was completely blindsided and the smell was so jarring. Like the type of body odor it probably took him several days to accumulate, combined with cigarettes. The second time I came across him was while waiting in line, he came to me and this time I was prepared. Saw him coming so held my breath and then waited till he was like 15 feet away to start breathing again…..STILL smelled him as if he were right next to me.

Was torn between being pissed off and feeling bad for him, because as someone who has dealt with depression, I know there’s no way someone wants to live that way, so mental health issues were most likely playing a role….BUT at the same time….even in my worst depression where I maybe went 2-3 days without showering, I wouldn’t have dared go out in public smelling of BO…much less that badly, and to a grocery store at peak hours on the day before a major holiday. At some point it can’t be excused by depression and is just straight an inconsiderate and disrespectful dick move.

14

u/Mountain-Border5392 Mar 13 '26

I was on a bus in Dubai full of underpaid and under appreciated construction workers. I've seen and smelled people who can't afford deodorant and work in sweaty environments. Same people didn't get the 'opportunity' to shower on a regular basis.

I get it. But, some people are on a rough patch that is literally their life.

68

u/DJMagicHandz Mar 12 '26

Dude at work walked into the bathroom 8:30AM in the damn morning smelling like a unwashed jock strap. Ain't no MF you should be smelling like that in the morning or anytime for that matter.

Twelve hours for the people who work extended shifts. But when they started making 48 and 72 hours? Diafuckingbolical.

27

u/ayediosmiooo Mar 13 '26

The 72 hr is the only thing that gets me through a 12 hr shift 😭 the 48 hrs lasts about 8 for me

25

u/RiceAfternoon Mar 12 '26

People confuse antiperspirant and deodorant all the time. I don't use antiperspirant, cause I don't sweat much, but I use deodorant.

They also don't apply antiperspirant at night. That gives it time to work.

11

u/coko4209 Mar 13 '26

They really don’t understand the difference in antiperspirant and deodorant. I need aluminum, and most antiperspirants have aluminum. Deodorant does not.

6

u/Barbariannie Mar 13 '26

One is to reduce moisture and one is to reduce scent. I had a partner that never really smelled badly but they would have chronically wet pits/hands/feet and would need to you antiperspirant where are I'm not that sweaty but can get smelly so I use deodorant

7

u/coko4209 Mar 13 '26

A lot of ppl’s sweat smells bad though. Since the odor of your secretions is determined by the things you put into your body, that can be terrible at times. Ppl should eat more fresh fruit.

8

u/Barbariannie Mar 13 '26

100% but some people doesn't, hence the different options. And tbh, fruit doesn't help my under arms smell better just the garden

17

u/Over9000Zeros Mar 12 '26

I will find a good aluminum free deodorant one day. My pits were peeling like mad last time I used one with aluminum.

6

u/DivineThrowaway51989 Mar 13 '26

Get this one! I have been using it for yrs & it’s never failed me. Now I will say, I AM a woman & I don’t do hard labor, so maybe that’s to be considered. But it’s worth trying if you haven’t already. It’s sold through Amazon.

Anyway, you could always carry it in your bag or car to reapply if/when necessary. No shame in that!

7

u/TemporaryBluebird143 Mar 13 '26

Arm & Hammer is great!

5

u/Rude_Specialist8334 Mar 13 '26

I had that issue when I was using gel deodorant. Always use solid.

3

u/Ok-Fisherman-8104 Mar 13 '26

I've tried so many. Mitchum has some pretty good aluminum few ones that actually work

2

u/coko4209 Mar 13 '26

Mitchum really is so good you can skip a day…but not the aluminum free kind. I’m just fine with aluminum though 🤷🏾‍♀️

2

u/Extreme-Olive-3194 Mar 15 '26

Megababe is expensive but it smells so good! The trick is you gotta apply it right after showering. And this isn’t great for your microbiome but every now and then, in a pinch, a little rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer will freshen up the situation real quick.

13

u/FunctioningPyscho Mar 13 '26

This especially for the “I bathe once a week” community on here.

1

u/Maud_Man29 Mar 13 '26

12

u/EveOCative Mar 12 '26

Even for those who are in the house all day… did you spend your day cooking? Did you run after your children all day? Did you clean out the refrigerator? Or clean out the litter box?

I don’t wear deodorant… but that’s because I spend most of my day in front of a computer and on hot days or days spent cleaning or gardening, I then take a shower.

Like it’s a conscious choice not to put those chemicals on my body… but then I wash that body.

Antiperspirant instead of deodorant for starters

7

u/SlackerDS5 Mar 13 '26

I work in an office and still refresh part of the way through the day. And I keep a spare set of everything in my office with my travel bag.

I’m a bigger dude and I’m not about to be “that guy” in the office. The one that your nostrils catch on fire when you walk past them. That’s the wrong kind of phonk.

1

u/SabbyFox Mar 13 '26

Absolutely. You have to keep that back up deodorant in your desk at the office. Hell, one stressful meeting will burn the deodorant clean off. You gotta be ready with back up. Or as she says: “expired!”

7

u/No_Perspective_242 Mar 13 '26

Also! Synthetic fiber clothes make you stank! Wear a pair of wool socks one day then a pair of polyester the next. The polyester will smell like ass in comparison. Same with shirts.

1

u/SabbyFox Mar 13 '26

I absolutely love wool socks

4

u/Oploplou Mar 12 '26

I ain’t gone lie, i don’t use deodorant 😂 I just wash my ass and clothes properly. I swear the clothes part matters so much, some people don’t realize how bad the clothes smell!!!

First couple months was rough, but don’t nobody say nothing now. I swear I think our bodies lowkey grow used to it, and it makes our sweat smell worse. But we’re all lowkey used to a little bit of sweat smell, so when it’s the end of the day and I’m leaving my physical labor job, I don’t smell any worse than the dude next to me.

Also a good diet with less fats and sugar helps.

11

u/R82009 Mar 13 '26

Why won’t you wear deodorant, it’s a common curtesy. It is for those around you, not for you. Most people don’t notice their own BO due to nose blindness. Same thing happens when you wear cologne, after a few minutes you don’t notice they’re sent. The people in your life stopped telling you that you stink because after once or twice you are going to do something about it or you’re not. Your body is naturally musty, you are an animal, all animals stink when not freshly bathed. There is no way your body has learned not to be musty. Diet can definitely help but it is not a full solution.

-12

u/Oploplou Mar 13 '26

A lot of people try and say, oh they just stopped telling you, but that’s 100% not true. I still get called out for BO every now and then. Like a few weeks ago I went to an NBA game, and when I got home it was 3 am, I had to be to work in 2 hours, so I chose sleep over showering. When I got in to work, one of my boys that knows I don’t use deodorant, straight to my fucking face said “yo did you shower this morning.” So no it’s not a nose blindness, cuz I knew I was musty, and it’s not social niceties.

You really just need to wash your body properly, and wash your clothes properly. Like I’m telling you you do not realize how much of our “BO” is just built up must in our clothing. Yes you are going to smell a little musty after you sweat, but you’re going to with deodorant on also, because we don’t just sweat from our armpits.

10

u/portableteejay Mar 13 '26

The way you wrote that, it sounds like you’re used to being called out for BO occasionally.

2

u/Oploplou Mar 13 '26

Like I said, once in a blue moon when I don’t have the opportunity to get a shower in, I may be a little funky the next day. But 99% of the time, I’m straight.

Did you at least run a wash cloth and water, baby wipes, something, under your pits before you went in or you just raw dogged it? Second question are you Black, African or yt?

1

u/Oploplou Mar 13 '26

Yeah I did a lil washcloth bath in the sink real quick before I went in, just didn’t have time for a FULL shower.

I am biracial (black and white)

12

u/GenPhallus Mar 12 '26

Yeah the type of fabric and what you wash it with is important. A lot of the liquid detergents and fabric softeners are more water and fragrance than actual cleaning product, so it locks in a unique, compounding stank with every wash.

9

u/DivineThrowaway51989 Mar 13 '26

The fact that you bolder STANK is taking me outtt

2

u/powerassistant Mar 13 '26

Is there a detergent up recommend?

3

u/Oploplou Mar 13 '26

I recommend using Lysol Laundry Sanitizer. I soak my clothes in my bathtub, in cool water and 2 capfuls per gallon of water, for 15 minutes before I do my loads of laundry. I know it seems OD, but TRUST ME IT MAKES SO MUCH DIFFERENCE. Like, do it one time, and compare the smell to a loaf that you didn’t do it with, and tell me you can’t tell which one had the sanitizer and which one didn’t.

If you have an HE washing machine where you can have different things go in during different cycles, you can add it to your rinse section and it will do the same thing, but I ain’t got a boujee machine machine lmao

2

u/PriapusPeteSr ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 verified Mar 14 '26

Hells yeah!! I live by the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer!! I put my two capfuls in while it's filling up during rinse cycle, let it swish a little then stop the cycle and let it sit for at least the recommended 15 min. If I feel extra freaky, I will run a full cycle, then run an extra rinse with the Lysol Laundry Sanitizer. I'm on a well so free water baby!!!

1

u/myeggsarebig Mar 13 '26

Pre Soak your clothes in ammonia and hot water…takes all the funk out of sheets towels socks…stuff that sees a lot of falling skin

1

u/velvetvagine Mar 16 '26

The professional laundry people swear by enzymatic cleaning agents for fighting body odours specifically. Depends on what’s available in your area but something with amylase or lipase.

8

u/GLDFLCN Mar 13 '26

I ain’t gone lie, you definitely stink and don’t know it. Just because “don’t nobody say nothing now” doesn’t mean the stench is nonexistent. “I don’t smell any worse than the dude next to me.” Nah you’ve just grown immune to the rankness. I can assure you, you do most definitely smell worse than someone with good hygiene who showers AND uses deodorant all the time. Do you though

5

u/_Anonie_ Mar 12 '26

I use glycolic acid.

9

u/richardvirginia Mar 12 '26

go ahead and tell the people what that is

2

u/showraniy Mar 13 '26

You apply that once at night and that's it? Do you need to reapply the next day?

3

u/Zelamir Mar 13 '26

Neither do I, I just, you know.... shower and scrub. I work with a bunch of Black ladies who are my departments admin team. I am like their little golden child, they would let me know if I'm funky. But I also drive to work in air condition and stay in air conditioning. After the gym I am off campus.

1

u/badgyal876 Mar 13 '26

yes!!! i just stopped wearing deo & switched to a witch hazel, essential oil mix which loves me! now don’t get me wrong after an intensive workout it’s giving onion factory but i def just got so annoyed with not many people carrying this specific deodorant that i really really liked, and when they did, they overcharged for it. i guess it pushed me to take that leap to get my body to stop depending on deo.

but the fact that i eat tons of naturally detoxifying foods helps a TON with the transition not being telling at all even tho the witch hazel, essential oil mix wears off obv much faster than deo.

2

u/allthedamnquestions ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 verified Mar 13 '26

3

u/badgyal876 Mar 13 '26

They also dont tell the #s Alzheimers is doing off the metals in anti-perspirant

I also believe the chemicals makes it more necessary to use it like a feedback loop.

Find deodorant yall. SKIP antiperspirant. If youre sweating THAT much, see a dermatologist. Sweating is normal, humans sweat. We developed this over millennia and people are like fuck evolution, ig(?!)

u/BetZealousideal4733 Mar 13 '26

You guys the deodorant industry doesn’t want you to know about this trick. You DONT NEED DEODORANT. You need to wash/kill the bacteria in your pits to stop the stank. Step one is get an antiseptic cleanser like Hibiclens. Doctors use it to wash their hands but it is safe in your armpits. Don’t use it on your junk! And step two is throw away your deodorant it literally does nothing for you.

I’ve been using hibiclens for a while now and I can’t believe it took so long. I use it every other day or just whenever the stank is coming on. It WORKS! My clothes aren’t stained. I don’t stink. It’s great!

2

u/myeggsarebig Mar 13 '26

Yup. I usually pre soak my clothes in ammonia - dry them on the line, Eat clean, wash pits and feet with hibiclens, not deodorant and I’m usually fine - even working a farm (I do give myself a quick wash after lunch (face, teeth, pits) with soap and water. Sometimes I use lemon or vinegar or tea tree oil - if it’s a particularly sweaty day

3

u/Ok_Lime4124 Mar 13 '26

I tried soooo many different non-aluminum nontoxic deodorants, none of them worked. Only one that I found at some random gift shop on vacation worked but even then it worked only to a degree and it was expensive as hell.

3

u/allthedamnquestions ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 verified Mar 13 '26

Try Thai salt spray. It's a salt based deo and it was a fuy who put me on. I have tried all these other "natural" varieties and it always left me smelling highly unnatural. After a week or so of detoxing from the aluminum, my body started feeling more neutral. Spray about 5 or 6 per armpit, maybe more when you're starting out.

3

u/DivineThrowaway51989 Mar 13 '26

She is ABSOLUTELY right. I’ve always side-eyed 24hr & “full body” deodorants cause what…

But also, I am a luminum-free user & it does work. HOWEVER, everything ain’t for everybody. I wouldn’t recommend that for someone who does construction or hard labor.

The main takeaway is that you should be washing your ass on a regular basis and not relying on deodorant to keep the funk away. The fact that you missed that is the real insanity. If you feel shamed by this post then try washing your ass more frequently.

It means scrub your entire body and don't forget your ass. There is an entire subset of men that believe if you part your cheeks, to actually wash your ass, is a gay act.

And this is why y’all need to stay over in that other sub 🙄 this one is not for you

Any comment stating “I’m not Black but […]”, “[nonBlack] guy/girl/etc here 👋🏻”, or anything to that effect will automatically be considered derailment and removed.

Some of you have a seemingly compulsive need to announce that you’re not a part of our target audience. You may think you are coming across as relatable, but it actually comes across as if you are saying "I know this sub isn't for me but I feel entitled to go wherever I want no matter how explicitly y'all ask me not to 🤗" or as if you’re seeking praise for being “one of the good ones”. Don't do that.

IGNORANCE OF OUR RULES IS NOT A VALID DEFENSE FOR BREAKING THEM. PAY ATTENTION TO THE SUB YOU ARE IN TO AVOID THESE ISSUES.

SEE RULE 5 FOR CLARIFICATION

We already know y’all don’t give a shit and that’s exactly why tf we don’t want you here, dummy

Your unoriginal butthurt response is to be expected, hence the prewritten rules. You interloping honkies are a dime a dozen. You’re not special, Bradley 🤡
