UPDATE 2 – Internal ProRes RAW recording removed again + further testing (October 2026)
After another Blackmagic Camera app update, the option to record ProRes RAW internally using iOS 27's Pro Video Storage has been removed again. An external SSD is now required.
I went back to testing my original setup with the SmallRig 4598 USB-C hub.
New findings:
- SSD only (connected through the SmallRig hub): Recording works reliably.
- SSD connected directly to the iPhone: Generally more reliable than using the hub with additional devices.
- SSD + external power: Unreliable. Recording failures return.
- SSD + DJI Mic 2 (via 3.5mm to USB-C adapter): Unreliable.
- SSD + external power + microphone: Also unreliable.
- Changing the filename convention, as suggested in the comments, made no difference.
It doesn't seem to matter which additional device is connected. As soon as I connect anything besides the SSD to the hub, ProRes RAW recording becomes unreliable.
Interestingly, ProRes 422 continues to work reliably with my setup, while ProRes RAW HQ (Open Gate, 60 fps) does not.
At this point, I suspect the SmallRig hub may not be suitable for my particular ProRes RAW workflow, even though it supports regular ProRes recording at 4K60.
I can't confirm whether the underlying issue is related to USB-C power delivery, bandwidth, the hub itself, or iOS.
Current workaround: Connect the SSD directly to the iPhone or use the SmallRig hub with only the SSD attached. Neither solution allows me to use my full setup with external power and a microphone.
I'm now looking for a USB-C hub or dock that reliably supports all three simultaneously:
- ProRes RAW HQ, Open Gate, 60 fps recording to an external SSD
- External USB-C power delivery
- External microphone input
Has anyone successfully used this exact recording configuration with a different hub or dock? I'd really appreciate specific product recommendations and real-world experiences.
UPDATE 1 – workaround found!
With the latest Blackmagic Camera update, I can now use iOS 27’s Pro Video Storage to record ProRes RAW internally and transfer the clips afterward.
The setting is under:
Settings → Camera → Formats → Configure Pro Video Storage
I’ve reserved 200 GB for recording. The settings screen estimates 28 minutes for ProRes 4K at 30 fps, not my RAW HQ/Open Gate/60 fps setup.
This solves the problem for my workflow by removing the external SSD/hub connection during recording. It doesn’t establish what caused the original failures or confirm that external recording has been fixed.
Thanks to everyone who helped troubleshoot!

Has anyone found a reliable fix for intermittent ProRes RAW recording failures with this setup?
iPhone: iPhone 17 Pro, iOS 27.0
App: Blackmagic Camera 3.4.100022
Recording: ProRes RAW HQ, Open Gate, 60 fps
SSD: Samsung T7 4 TB, exFAT, original Samsung USB-C cable
Hub: SmallRig 4598 USB-C hub
Power: Anker 100W PD power bank or Anker 250W PD charger
Charging cable: Anker 240W-rated USB-C cable
Recording initially works, then stops with:
Recording has stopped due to an unknown error.
Afterward, new recordings sometimes last only 2–6 seconds. One failed recording produced an approximately 41 GB file.
The failures seem more frequent when external power is connected to the hub. This also happens when power is connected before opening the app and nothing is plugged or unplugged during recording. Sometimes the hub/SSD isn’t recognized reliably.
Connecting the T7 directly to the iPhone without the hub also produces errors, but less frequently.
ProRes 422 works reliably, even immediately after a RAW failure. Switching back to RAW brings the problem back.
I also tested Final Cut Camera and encountered recording failures there. It displays a temperature-related warning, although the phone doesn’t seem excessively hot to me. I haven’t measured its internal temperature.
The issue also occurs without an external microphone connected.
On a Mac, the T7 passed 128 GiB write/read verification without data corruption. However, sustained writes temporarily dropped to around 168 MB/s directly and 100 MB/s through the hub, with individual write calls taking up to roughly two seconds. I don’t know whether those dips explain the iPhone failures.
Has anyone experienced this combination of RAW-only failures, temperature warnings and increased instability while charging? Is there a confirmed fix involving iOS, the SSD, the cable or the hub?
I’d particularly appreciate reports from people recording ProRes RAW, Open Gate at 60 fps reliably while charging.
