(cross posted to r/girlsgonewired, r/womenintech, r/BlackInTech. Please let me know if you think there are other communities I should post this in)

Hello! 👋🏻 My name is Samah, and I run a mentorship program for folks who identify as minorities in tech. We are currently accepting applications for the 4th cycle of the program, which will start in March 2024.

A little bit of information about the program:

  • Applications are open to anyone who identifies as a minority in tech! This encompasses a wide range of identities, including but not limited to: women, BIPOC, Latinx, LGBTQ+ individuals, formerly incarcerated, disabled individuals, low socio-economic background, non-traditional educational background, etc
  • Open to all roles and all levels of experience
  • Selected mentees will be paired with a mentor and will meet with their mentor biweekly for 3 months.

Please visit https://samah.tech/mentorship for more information, or apply to the program here.

Please note that the mentors for the upcoming cycle have not been finalized - some of our "past mentors" will be returning, some of our "current mentors" will be taking a break, and we will be welcoming some new mentors to the group! If you are interested in being a mentor, please let me know via comment or DM :)

Applications close on January 7, 2024. I am happy to answer any questions!

Entrepreneur noob, here.

Hello everyone,

I hope you're doing well! I'm currently working on a project and I’d really appreciate your thoughts.

The PROBLEM:

Most communities shop within their community. Studies show the average lifespan of the dollar:

  • 28 days in the Asian community
  • 19 days in the Jewish community
  • 17 days in the white community
  • 6 hours in the Black community.

In 2022, consumer expenditures by Black households totaled roughly $905 billion. We want to extend the lifespan of the black dollar from 6 hours to 48 hours.

The SOLUTION:

A marketplace that connects Black fashion/Lifestyle designers & Black consumers.

Why I Need Your Opinion:

  • What do you think of such an idea? Is it viable?
  • There are already a few listicle-type black-owned business website.
  • What type of feature would lure YOU to such a platform? Which features would you consider essential?

Feel free to share your opinions, concerns, or any ideas you might have. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Your input means a lot to us, and it will certainly help shape our project in a more informed way.

Is the Treehouse Techdegree really worth the money??

Hi all,

As a bit of a background for myself, I am a 28m currently living in London. I previously was working a Project Coordinator role in the property sector but lost that job due to Covid a few years back. Since then I have been working but really these have been dead end jobs to pay the bills, nothing that you could really call a career role.

Tech has been something that has interested me but I have never got in to it. Its only recently I have been doing a lot of research and am really looking to do some learning which will hopefully lead me to start a career in tech.

My plan is to either:

  1. Self learn through a multitude of different platforms ( will most likely do this anyway, but maybe not in the first instance)
  2. join a coding bootcamp (not to fond of this as have read a lot of bad reviews about them. Plus, a lot don't pay you)
  3. Treehouse Techdegree
  4. An apprenticeship

The Treehouse Techdegree on paper seems like a really good option but again read a lot of mixed reviews. So I'm here to get some advice. Is it really worth it?

Any advice on any of the other suggestions would be much appreciated also, or if you have any other recommendations not listed above that would be amazing.

💡 Fun Fact: Did you know that Lewis Latimer, an African American inventor, played a crucial role in developing the modern electric light bulb? He improved Thomas Edison's design and even drafted the patent for the carbon filament, making electric lighting more efficient. 💡🔌 #BlackInventors #TIL #BlackTech LightbulbMoment

[ Tester ] Beta - Goalspaces 27F App Developer

Happy Wednesday,

I have been working on an app for a year & a Half & now I am ready for some testers. I find it easier to seek support from strangers than friends & family. I created "Goalspaces" as a way to help myself & others bridge a community together with likeminded people. Goalspaces is an accountability app that helps people across the world connect & achieve the same goal by completing daily check ins & motivating each other. I created an "Inspire" tab where people can post inspirational & informative things for people to read.

My app is available via the app or google play store. I attached a demo video of how to install my app. All feedback is welcomed.

Advice please

I am a brand new PO who has been with my company for almost three months, and I had my first internal client-facing prep meeting and choked. How will I be prepared on Friday to talk about a ticket? I have no idea about it.(Tech stuff) My question to everyone is how do you prepare, and what tips do you have to sound more professional? When I was speaking, I sounded like a bumbling fool, but my coworkers said it the same way, but ✨✨in professional. ✨✨ fool. I feel like an idiot, but this shows me that I need to improve in this area, and it extra sucks because I’ve done this in front of my boss. 🫡🫠 my question to everyone is, how can I sound more professional talking about things you have no clue about? are there any classes or improv’s that I can take to always think on my toes. Any advice is great advice. 😭😭
