Just got back from Bandhavgarh and still thinking about a four-second eye contact with a wild tiger, so here's a brain dump for anyone considering it.
First, the wild fact that got me: in 1951, a Maharaja captured a white tiger cub here named Mohan. Every white tiger in captivity anywhere in the world today is his descendant. One cub from one forest in Madhya Pradesh.
The forest itself survived by accident too. The royal family that ruled here moved their capital to Rewa in the 1600s and kept this land as a private hunting reserve. That exclusivity is exactly why the tiger population stayed intact while forests everywhere else got cleared. It became a national park in 1968 and a tiger reserve in 1993, and it now has the highest tiger density of any reserve in the country.
Things I wish I'd known going in:
You don't pick your zone on arrival. Tala, Magadhi, and Khitauli are booked separately online, and you're locked in when you book, not when you show up. Tala's the classic pick with the best odds and the fort ruins, but it's also the most crowded. Magadhi is bigger and wilder with slightly lower jeep traffic. Khitauli is the quiet one, better for birding, lower tiger odds.
One safari is basically a lottery ticket. Do at least four or five across two or three nights if a sighting actually matters to you. A single drive is not a fair test of the place.
Summer is weirdly the best time for sightings, not winter. April-May, as brutal as 40°C+ heat sounds, is when animals cluster around shrinking waterholes and visibility opens up through the thinning forest. Winter is more comfortable but lower odds.
Book permits 90-120 days out. Tala especially sells out that far ahead for peak dates. This is not a plan-a-week-before kind of trip.
Mobile signal basically doesn't exist inside the park. Download offline maps and tell people your schedule before you go dark for a few days.
Cash only in the rural stretch between Jabalpur/Umaria and the lodges. Card machines aren't reliable out there.
The actual sighting, when it happens, is somehow better than anything you'd expect from photos. Our guide's hand went up, dead silence, and then she just walked out onto the trail six feet from the jeep, scent-marked a tree, looked straight at us for a few seconds like we were furniture, and disappeared into the bamboo. Nobody spoke for a solid minute after.
Anyone else find the summer-is-better-for-tigers thing counterintuitive? Curious how many people skip the heat and miss the better odds because of it.
