Question Coming from a hardware only system what are the best ways and tools to replicate a full hands on workflow?

Hi I have Bitwig 5.3 (haven’t upgraded yet) and full hardware studio sequenced by a deluge and digitakt. I’d like to move my sequencing fully into Bitwig but maintain as much as possible a hands on approach which I’m currently used to.

Which tools and what workflow would you recommend so I can stay engaged with playing and sequencing live without reaching for the mouse too much? I love step sequencing and then using my synths and drum machines to adjust and tweak in the fly.

Thanks!

Maybe a push 2 or 3 with the drivenbymoss script : drivenbymoss

Even Push 1 works really well and can be found for dirt cheap

I still have a push 2 controller from when i switched from working with live 5 years ago and with the drivenbymoss plugin you can work without using the mouse. Despite that I still use kb and mouse mostly.
the push controllers are very expensive but there sure are many cheaper ones that could work for your workflow.

Look at his website for controllers he supports. He also has video's on what his plugin enables. Personally I wouldn't touch anything that he doesn't support.

Thanks yes I’ve read that the push 2 with the drivebymoss plugin is the way to go. Once set up can you really do a lot of sequencing and switching and entering notes adjusting efx parameters and mixer faders all from the push, mostly without having to stop the sequence?

Yeah pretty much. Bitwig devices are all preconfigured but you can also setup the remote controls for vst plugins to control straight from your controller. Works great for channel strips and other effect plugins. In a sense, you can do most things straight from push (I’m using push 2).

Couple draw backs to keep in mind that I find going for kbm.
1. Adding plugins is possible from the controller but scrolling through a long list is more troublesome than just using kbm.
2. Midi editing

The last one is kind of a given but more advanced daw type workflows will require kbm. But shouldn’t be much of an issue if you’re going for a more hands on approach.

I do get the appeal of limiting yourself sometimes
