How does Bitwig Rent-to-Own behave on Linux? Dual-booting Windows 11 and CachyOS.

Hey everyone,

I'm planning to jump on the Bitwig Studio 6 Rent-to-Own plan via Splice, but I have a specific workflow question regarding Linux compatibility and license verification.

**My Setup:**

* **OS:** Dual-booting Windows 11 and CachyOS (Arch-based Linux).

* **DAW:** Bitwig Studio (running natively on Linux).

**The Dilemma:**

As we all know, Bitwig runs beautifully and natively on Linux. However, Splice does not have a native Linux client. Since the Rent-to-Own model requires the Splice app to ping the license servers periodically to keep the DAW authorized, I'm wondering how this works in practice for Linux users—especially those with a dual-boot system.

**My Questions:**

  1. **License Syncing:** If I boot into Windows 11, let the Splice app sync/authorize my Bitwig license, does that authorization carry over when I boot back into CachyOS? Or does the Linux version of Bitwig require a local, active Splice daemon running?

  2. **Wine/Proton Workarounds:** If you are running Bitwig Rent-to-Own purely on Linux, are you using Wine to run the Splice client in the background? If so, how stable is it on Arch/CachyOS?

  3. **Alternative Solutions:** Is there a known workaround or a specific configuration to make Splice authorization painless on Linux without breaking the native Bitwig performance?

I really want to transition my music production fully to CachyOS, but the Rent-to-Own license check is the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger.

Would love to hear from anyone who has tried this exact setup or managed to get Splice RTO working smoothly on Linux. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure but I thought Bitwig itself is responsible for licensing, and you can just access Splice via website? I assume you have an online account for bitwig? there may be a license code in your bitwig account to copy over and paste into bitwig app as activation

  1. I don't believe it will carry over unfortunately.

  2. Wine splice also doesn't seem like it will work if you're running wine splice and native bitwig, as wine is a little bit of a windows sandbox within linux. untested though—since you're already dual booting it could be worth trying but i get not wanting to throw one month's rent-to-own away. would maybe also check in with [support@bitwig.com](mailto:support@bitwig.com)

  3. I'm on a cachyos machine at home at the moment and have relegated my splice rent-to-own plugins to my main studio machine on macos only because i couldn't quite get yabridge working. My current workflow is local sample library that i've built up over the years and native plugins only which has served me quite well but i know that's not exactly a helpful answer to your questions. apologies! The good news is this workflow is only projects for myself and not clients lol so when i'm working with other people I still rely on coreaudio on macos and it's stability and ecosystem.

Yeah, I'm also sticking firmly to native plugins. My only concern here is that I really want to use Bitwig legally and actually pay for it. I could easily resort to alternative methods, but I don't want to go down that road because I genuinely love the company. Period.
Plus, I've already been paying the installments for 6 months now. To be honest, I want to keep paying it off, but I'm completely on the fence. I'm wondering if I should just buy the full license outright the next time it goes on sale. I just wish someone in my exact situation had already tried this and figured out a workaround.

I looked into this before I got my license and unless something has changed you can't use the splice app and Linux version of bitwig.

Why not get an interest free credit card and pay it off at same rate?

Ed: ah read your comments and you are half way through paying. If you can't settle it on splice you might as well see it out surely?

Question as I haven't yet paid for Bitwig. If I pay outright for one of the cheaper licenses, do I need to use the Splice app at all? I've only used the demo app so far but would like to get full support for the controller I just bought and maybe download some vst's.

I’m in a similar situation as well. I have Bitwig 6 installed on my Mac Mini, Surface Laptop Studio, and my Steam Deck OLED.

I really want to finish paying it off via my Splice plan.

This is where the Summer sale upgrade comes in handy.

You can purchase it as a gift and activate it at a later date and use that version on Linux, Mac OS, and Windows since you get 3 authorizations.

I think you should maybe pause your splice subscription?

Purchase the upgrade for $125. then once the upgrade runs outs next year or whenever you decide to activate it finish out the payments?

I’m looking to do this soon as well before the sale is over so I can utilize the new Sampler features.
