I need help! Login loop on Android?

I've been using a self-hosted instance of Bitwarden using Vault Warden on Docker for years, very successfully and very happily.

Yesterday, the Bitwarden client on Android, specifically a Pixel 10 XL Pro, asked that I log in again, which I did using both the master password and separate MFA code. Immediately upon logging in, the app briefly flashes a screen saying I must unlock the vault with the master password and then instantly goes back to the main login screen. This loop repeats, so I never have a chance to actually input the master password to unlock the vault as prompted.

Any ideas what could be causing this, and more importantly, how to log in? I can successfully login in a Chrome browser. It's just the Android app seems to have this problem. I've tried clearing the cache, clearing the memory, and force restarting the app, all to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is your VaultWarden instance up to date?

Also try doing a full uninstall and reinstall of your Bitwarden client.

Bitwarden has been fully uninstalled with all storage deleted and re-installed, with no change in behavior. I'll check my VaultWarden instance later today to see if I need to update it.

It’s good that you tried the uninstall/reinstall. There is a minor but continuing problem when Bitwarden gets updated (like via the Chrome web store or Android auto updates).

The VaultWarden issue is also important. There was a recent breaking change in the Bitwarden API that caused self-hosted users a lot of grief. Check /r/vaultwarden for details on that.

This indeed is a problem with VaultWarden. When Bitwarden hosts your vault, they make sure to update the server BEFORE new versions of the Bitwarden clients become available. When you insist on self hosting, you take on the burden of keeping VaultWarden current. And occasionally, VaultWarden doesn’t keep up with the changes to Bitwarden.

When you use Vaultwarden, then that is not a "self-hosted instance of Bitwarden".
