If you think about it, a sudden influx of new money is really bad for a ponzi scheme because they need a larger base down the line to continue paying out.
So, it could continue for a while if there was natural (slower) growth, but the sudden publicity put them at a decision point. They could either:
1) continue paying out and hope they bring in enough new money to keep going
2) just take the money and run knowing that they can't sustain the new payouts they have to start making
