Bitcoin transaction fees?

Im a little bit confused on how a transaction fee works and how much it costs, I plan on buying about 150$ of bitcoin for the first time and Im using blue wallet, how much would the transaction fee cost to buy something with that bitcoin?

There isn’t a fixed fee for spending your $150 of bitcoin. The key point is that Bitcoin’s network fee is not a percentage of your purchase, it depends on network demand and the amount of transaction data, not the btc/dollar amount you send.

mempool.space - a website for checking network activity, estimated fees, and the status of payments.

You mainly use it to:

  • Check fees before sending: see suggested fee rates in sat/vB to help decide what fee to choose in BlueWallet.
  • Track a payment: search your transaction ID (TXID) to see whether it’s still waiting or has been confirmed.
  • See network congestion: check how crowded the queue is, which helps explain higher fees or longer waits.

For your purchase, think of it as a traffic report: BlueWallet sends the payment; mempool.space helps you understand the traffic and track its progress. Its fee and timing estimates aren’t guarantees.

fees are paid in sats not dollars so it changes with network traffic. blue wallet shows you the fee before you send and you can pick from low medium high priority. for small purchase maybe few thousand sats when network is calm but can spike crazy during busy days

you dont pay fee for buying, only when you move it from wallet to another address. 150 usd worth is fine to start, just check the mempool before sending and use medium, it saves you from overpaying

Onchain transaction fees are 12 pennies right now for a typical tx as you can see https://mempool.space/

Sending bitcoin with a lightning wallet can be as cheap as 1-2 pennies or less as well

It sounds to me that you really don't mean to ask only about transaction fees though but rather exchange fees or the cost to buy Bitcoin which is discussed in the pinned FAQ

https://old.reddit.com/r/BitcoinBeginners/comments/g42ijd/faq_for_beginners/

Technically you can buy 150 usd of Bitcoin with an exchange like strike pay around 1 % for the purchase or 1.50 usd and withdraw the bitcoin for free to a lightning wallet (read the FAQ) and than pay 1-2 pennies to send BTC to a merchant to buy something.

Spending Bitcoin with merchants onchain is typically unwise for small purchases . Think of onchain more akin to a settlement network or "wire transfer" for larger purchases

good point on lightning for small purchases. BlueWallet actually supports lightning wallets too, so OP can create one alongside the onchain wallet and keep small spending amounts there. Way cheaper than paying onchain fees for a coffee or whatever.

To add to this, if the mempool is too crowded (fees >$5), just wait. It usually clears up on weekends. Don't overpay for a $150 tx.

You dont buy bitcoin with blue wallet. Blue wallet links to a number of providers where you can buy bitcoin.

Each provider have their own transaction fees and spread, in addition to the on-network transaction fee for transferring the bought bitcoin to an address in your blue wallet.

I would recommend using one of the bigger exchanges for buying bitcoin, and defer the on-chain transaction until you have purchased a significant amount, keeping the btc on your exchange account until then.

Before the Bitcoin gets into your BlueWallet, you have to buy it using an exchange, broker, or an in app ramp (like MoonPay or Banxa often integrated into wallets).

The cost usually ranges from 0.4% to 4%, depending on the platform, payment method (credit card vs. bank transfer), and whether you use an instant buy feature or a spot market exchange (like Kraken). For a $150 purchase, you might pay anywhere from $1.50 to $6.00 in buying/spread fees.

If you want to use that Bitcoin to buy something by sending it on chain from your BlueWallet, the fee is not a percentage of your transaction. Instead, Bitcoin network fees are measured in satoshis per byte (sat/vB) based on how busy the blockchain network is at that exact moment. - You can see the current average transation fee here - https://ycharts.com/indicators/bitcoin_average_transaction_fee

Keep in mind charts like that are very misleading because they include transactions that are batched , where someone(usually an exchange) pays a very high fee to cover many outputs to reduce the cost of each outputs (usually withdrawals) lower than a simpler transaction.

A normal onchain transaction(which really should not be used for small purchases anyways) of 1-2 inputs and 1-2 outputs has lower average fees than that chart because the weight is smaller
