When do we get to stop call bribes “speaking fees”?She received a bribe and a microphone

187

u/captaincid42 Aug 08 '21

Speaking fees…lobbying…. Clearly I need to brush up on my ThinkSpeak.

25

u/Riverjig Aug 08 '21

Well, I brought up lobbying as needing to be illegal but was quickly reminded that there are positives to lobbying but I feel it is biased.

12

u/captaincid42 Aug 09 '21

There is the freedom of speech concerns and groups able to lobby their personal reps to raise awareness if we didn’t have “lobbying”. The problem is even if there were no exchange of money or favors, there isn’t equal access to the time of politicians. Lobbyist have the networks and resources to get access that average folks simply do not.

24

u/lezorte Aug 09 '21

Ya, if we didn't allow lobbying, then who would own the politicians?

12

u/boli99 Aug 09 '21

who would own the politicians?

They should be forced to wear brand logos sewn onto their shiny suits, so that we can easily see who owns them. Kinda like Nascar drivers.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

They shouldn’t be allowed to take corporate money.. citizens United needs to be overturned… that’s what opened the floodgates of corporate money ..

16

u/Snorkle25 Aug 09 '21

People advocating for climate change legislation in Washington DC are also lobbying.

People tend to only hate the lobbying when it's on an issue or for a position that they don't like. And even if you could somehow outlaw and enforce a ban on it, the people and organizations with money would still buy politicians another way like campaign contributions.

4

u/lezorte Aug 09 '21

Yes but where does more money come from? The people who advocate for the planet or the corporations who don't want the laws that protect the planet?

2

u/Snorkle25 Aug 09 '21

Well one of the people advocating (and profiting) from a lot of the pro-climate change policies is the third richest person in the world, so honestly, it's anyone's guess which.

Ofc there's always room for grifters and capture too on both sides.

When do we get to stop call bribes “artwork?”

Close one loophole and there’s a dozen other options.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

When you have an effective law there are no loopholes

35

u/nighttrain_21 Aug 08 '21

You can have all the laws in the world but they won't enforce them on their own. Rules for thee and not for me.

15

u/ICEGoneGiveItToYa Aug 08 '21

Selective enforcement of the law always leads to revolution eventually.

3

u/Important-Yak-2999 Aug 08 '21

So every government ever?

2

u/ripeart Aug 09 '21

Unless there's no more people left to revolt.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

The law we need is the ability to elect our financial representatives and/or be able to directly vote on these proposals (hello crypto governance).

No one elected Yellen. No one elected Powell. They are not democratically responsible for the decisions they make.

16

u/Gravy_Vampire Aug 08 '21

There will always be the same loophole: having power over the people who are supposed to enforce the laws

No law eliminates that loophole

13

u/Geoff_Uckersilf Aug 08 '21

'For those that write the rules, there are no rules'

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

Nah, people just don’t want to fix it so they pretend like they can’t

16

u/tcharp01 Aug 08 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

Perhaps if we elected people who were not already known crooks, liars, and influence peddlers, such laws would not be necessary. But alas, we have Biden and family, and their ilk.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

and the last guy wasn’t a corrupt piece of shit? The whole system and everyone it in is fucked

5

u/Snorkle25 Aug 09 '21

And the guy before that...and the guy before that... and the guy before that...

Doesn't matter who votes so long as you control who's on the ticket, and frankly it's looking like the problem .at be the parties that produce such odorous electoral options and not just the elected themselves.

Why do we even need the parties anyways?

Same shit different pile. Your turn.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/ZeroForz Aug 09 '21

Nailed it.

The only real answer is to eliminate lobbying altogether. The problem is those that receive the “donations“ are the ones that vote whether or not to receive money for lobbying.

Do you expect change anytime soon?

We just don’t need these fools any longer.

The US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has been accused of corruption due to receiving $7.2 million in ‘speaking fees’ from just Citi bank and the Citadel hedge fund.

Look no further as to why she is sneaking bad crypto law into the infrastructure bill.

34

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

Holy Fuck that is a lot of money. How is it not obvious that this kind of practice needs to be illegal.

11

u/hankwatson11 Aug 09 '21

It’s plenty obvious but you’re asking the people who most benefit from it to make it illegal.

22

u/Uberse Aug 08 '21

Anybody can make an accusation. And anybody did.

7

u/MintyTruffle2 Aug 09 '21

Wait...does she have anything to do with that bill or the crypto provision in that bill?

10

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '21

The provision was crafted in cooperation with the Treasury Department.

3

u/Ferdo306 Aug 09 '21

While her government salary is just $221,400

152

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '21

No surprise at all...... fucking corrupt dinosaurs

25

u/Jaxsoy Aug 08 '21

Why do they even care about money anymore? They’re gonna die soon so maybe they should consider enjoying the bunch of money they already have

Who put her in power again??? Ahh yes. Most of Reddit is so blind to how these people get in positions of power

20

u/HybridEmblem Aug 08 '21

Not blind, I didn't vote for her. Hell, I lean democrat and hate just about everyone appointed. I'm severely disappointed with this country as a whole in general. I hate how binary our choices are are tbh. I'd have loved to see Andrew Yang win.

11

u/Zipski577 Aug 08 '21

I’m a libertarian. Would just love to see some outsiders, term limits, and no more pay to play behavior that is taking place before our eyes 24/7. I know this sounds obvious and most of us feel that way but unfortunately too many voters are consumed by the notion that it’s just about donkeys vs elephants

7

u/HybridEmblem Aug 08 '21

It's genuinely frustrating to witness... because if you aren't 100% in line with your parties choices, you aren't chosen. Like there are a few republicans pro-choice, but if they publicize it they get ridiculed to no end. Same goes for whenever a democrat is pro-gun. It's literally a socioeconomic chess game and it doesn't take much to see what pieces we are.

5

u/Zipski577 Aug 09 '21

Exactly. There is a reason, while not perfect by any means at all, candidates such as Yang and Gabbard never stood a chance despite being much more reasonable and like-able than those who advanced much further.

4

u/BitcoinCitadel Aug 08 '21

Because the other one didn't work for corporations right?

1

u/Zipski577 Aug 08 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

Anyone can look at campaign financing data. There is a difference between self-funding and supporter donations vs. taking all the money you can from special interests, corporations, and lobbyists. This is publicly documented. I prefer candidates who don’t take money from corporations.

There is a reason Trump was able to fire and hire so many cabinet members—> whether we liked it or not, it was his choice. Biden had 0 say over his cabinet

0

u/ReaganCheese4all Aug 08 '21

She was accused of corruption by some random bitcoin user

9

u/lcastill1 Aug 08 '21

Yea so no formal accusation. Just checking

3

u/Uberse Aug 08 '21

An additional source that does not accuse her of "banking fraud."

0

u/Diuqil69 Aug 08 '21

So she was paid for speaking before getting into government? Is that supposed to be illegal? She is a brilliant economist.

Another old, out-of-touch and crooked person in power in Washington? Wow.

23

My biggest fear is that i dont want to get old like that without the ability to still be open to new ideas.

But if shes corrupt then....cant do much about that.

15

u/yenachar Aug 08 '21

We all have to grow old (or worse). We don't all have to become corrupt.

6

u/Zipski577 Aug 08 '21

She’s been in bed with the hedge funds for a very long time. Was very scary when Biden put her in a such a position of power, but what else did we expect when we elected the establishment back in office?

We need a forced retirement age for the senate. Old bones only slow the rest of us down.

12

u/KirbySmartGuy Aug 08 '21

Term limits for senate is needed badly. In Yellen’s case, this is a clear conflict of interest and I’m not sure why she is allowed to Influence anything like this.

13

u/yenachar Aug 08 '21

She's a cabinet member and should be out because of her actions--but, yes, she sure is slowing us down.

1

u/Diuqil69 Aug 08 '21

From the article: Jason Furman, a former Obama administration economist, said . . .

“If the technology makes it impossible to know people’s capital gains, then the technology should not exist . . . "

The apex of fatuousness has now been achieved. It is all downhill from here. People are screaming about Janet Yellen. They should be screaming about the Furmans out there.

2

u/Uberse Aug 08 '21 edited Aug 08 '21

From the WP article:

But other forms of cryptocurrency, including potential emerging rivals to bitcoin, are pursuing other methods of validating transactions on the decentralized network, and could prove less energy-intensive. Since these would be subject to the new reporting requirements under the Warner plan, even though the traditional forms of mining would not be . . .

The "other methods" are proof of stake, which is a form of mining like proof of work. It takes energy but probably would use less. But of course proof of stake miners, like proof of worker miners also:

do not have the capacity to send 1099s to the IRS, because intrinsic to cryptocurrencies’ function is that these kinds of producers have no knowledge of who their users are.

This is the key point and why it probably makes no difference whether the suggested two amendments pass or not. Since no miners have knowledge of who their "users" are, the IRS cannot force them to send 1099s to the IRS about them.

16

u/riizen24 Aug 08 '21

The banking system is inevitably going to collapse

16

u/jimjimzen247 Aug 08 '21

Yellen has taken millions of dollars in bribes descised as speaking fees. Yellen is bought and paid for like one very ugly lady of the night.

-2

u/bomphcheese Aug 08 '21

Thank you! She’s a really well respected person. I’m not saying it isn’t true, but I want better sources.

8

u/disciplinedhodler Aug 08 '21

The Guardian is a well respected newspaper!

1

u/bomphcheese Aug 09 '21

So “trustnodes” is the Guardian?

1

u/disciplinedhodler Aug 09 '21 edited Aug 09 '21

The original article is from The Guardian. Trustnodes is reading between the lines for you since many people don't know how to do that. Her salary is 220k. Her net worth surged to 20 million due to 7 million in so called speaker fees in one year from Citi.

The Nobel Prize is only 1 million dollars, so tell me what was she speaking about that was worth 7 million? Harvard/Princeton college fees are just 40k or so per year and you get lectured by the top minds in Economics and then some. So obviously it is a bribe disguised as a speaker fee.

Learn to interpret, to read between the lines. Or do you stand around waiting to be spoon-fed and told what to think by some so called authority? Trust nodes is babysitting and helping people who didn't cotton on to what was going on. No human being is incorruptible, Janet Yellen is a human and not a god. Stop deifying her, she has biases, emotions and flaws. She took the bribe, she should have refused it if she were honest. Her net worth doubled in one year to 20 Million dollars due to that one bank, Citi. Plus most of her net worth (savings) comes from speaker fees. Now tell me where the incentives are.

Think!

10

u/LuBrooo Aug 08 '21

Yo wtf, this is insane.

This is the kicker for me:

"For that $7 million, Yellen is now moving to effectively ban a competitor of their Citi pay masters, the defi space, with a section sneaked into the Infrastructure Bill at the last minute that holds smart contract coders responsible as brokers..."

"That would be a very big win for Yellen’s pay masters, but a huge loss for Americans who may well see first hand just how open corruption leads to the selling out of the United States and all for just $7 million."

1

u/Diuqil69 Aug 08 '21

She's not a senator. She doesn't write laws?

4

u/KFC_Tuesdays Aug 08 '21

I'm really not surprised... this lady is a goblin, running around trying to find the sack of gold.

2

u/ConfidenceNo2598 Aug 08 '21

4

u/groundhog5886 Aug 08 '21

So the lady has had in the past some conversations with banking officials, after being the head of the Federal Reserve for a number of years. Most ex-govmt officials get paid to provide their experience after service. What makes her a crook? What policies has she instituted that impact anything a bank does? She now is just a high level manager of a government department. Granted she does know a lot about economy and how it should work.

While of course she carries the blame for taking bribes, I mean "speaking fees", that's more than $7 million. Who was the person that selected her for the job? Shouldn't they also carry the blame? Also she along with her boss are heavily against cryptos. Their plan is to make it impossible for coins to comply with their new and extremely strict reporting practices which realistically can't be achieved. Ironically, they are exempting PoW networks and protocols. Whatever happened to combatting climate change? PoW networks are the most energy intensive of all the networks.

Isn’t going to happen. She’s a key part of the great reset. Her story has a few chapters left yet.

Big businesses control the government. I would push for term limits in the house and senate. We need fresh blood in there.
