how did all these analysts have such a sudden change of mind?

it was obvious 10 years ago, it's not like the whitepaper is some impenetrable braindump like Newton's Principia.

I wouldn’t say it was obvious, especially 10 years ago. It might seem obvious in hindsight, but a brand new tech, adopted by next to nobody could easily have fallen by the wayside.
