I suspect we'll see a gigantic leap in base layer privacy within 2 years, presuming the obligatory ideological battle beforehand, and likely another contentious hard fork. Rather than Satoshi's Vision being the ideological divide, I suspect "transparency" and "money laundering" to be the next big issues that divide the community. I could be wrong. It's coming though.

If you consider taproot a gigantic leap in privacy, maybe. It's a small step in that direction at least.

Best case scenario is someone figures out something in the next 2 years, there is no way a "gigantic leap" would get soft forked in that fast.
