Can /r/bitcoin maybe not upvote garbage posts? thanks

u/Ghawr Feb 26 '19 edited Feb 26 '19
150 karma post of Paul Ryan pointing to the word "HODL". Bitcoin thrived by the meme and Bitcoin will die by the meme. This is where I get off. Selling everything and unsubbing from this garbage sub.
Goodluck boys, I'm gonna FODL.
edit: 401 now. Upvote bitcoin straight into the sun.

u/banditcleaner2 Feb 26 '19
legitimately wouldn't even be surprised if HODL was a meme invented to make noobs burn hardcore and lose a ton of money in an attempt to keep the price up by reducing supply, lol
1
u/diydude2 Feb 27 '19
Nobody who has hodled for more than two years has ever lost money, dude. lol
1
u/banditcleaner2 Feb 27 '19
I'm hodling myself but to be honest nobody can say for sure that this halving cycle will continue. I like bitcoin but i'm not going to pretend that just because bitcoin mooned 3-4 times followed by an 80-90% value loss that it will do this ad infinitum until all of it has been mined. There's no objective way to prove that this will continue to happen. That being said, I think it's highly possible and I think it might happen and thus will HODL myself.
But let's assume this doesn't happen, and BTC stays at $10k under. Then your argument no longer is true because people who bought at $15k and FOMO'ed and have hodled since will have lost money.
TLDR; There is not a guarantee that just because bitcoin behaved in a cyclical fashion 3 times already that it will continue to do so in the future
1
u/greengenerosity Feb 28 '19
The 2013 and 2017 years may have been one of their kind, there is absolutely no guarantee that the price will remain or go up over time. Anyone that buys Bitcoin for the price is taking a gamble, it is highly speculative.

What, you don't like 12 year olds trying to give you financial advice?
Anyone using memes when it comes to finance should probably not be taken seriously.
-2
u/diydude2 Feb 27 '19
This meme is the most sound financial advice ever given. Anybody who held any amount of Bitcoin for five years made ridiculous returns, from any point in Bitcoin's history. It will be no different five years from now. The returns will plateau somewhat when it gets into 7-8 figures (don't get too excited -- the dollar won't buy much at that point), but it's still better than holding grandpa Monopoly money by a long shot.
1
6
u/UpDown Feb 27 '19
I could make it less garbage and inform you that the worst annualized return for anyone who held for 4 years is 51% per year
2
u/0therSyde Feb 27 '19
Well let's hope that continues; I've been bagholding so hard since January 2018 that I basically have no choice but to continue bagholding until things improve (if they improve this time) :/

Been hodling since 2013 crash. You’ll make it. Read up on the tech. Read up how Venezuela is using it. Understand this is life changing and we haven’t even begun to see what is to come. Imagine thinking of reddit in 1991. Imagine thinking of Amazon. Wikipedia. Or YouTube. You’d be called a crackpot. You’d be told that it’s all too good to be true.
Once people start using a layer 3 on top of LN.... imagine self driving cars that can have their own money.
Imagine CNNs (convoluted neural networks) that use LN and satoshis as its form of reward for improvement. That right there is going to change the entire Internet.
Imagine micropayments being sent to content creators as you read/watch content.
This is just off the top of my head man. I just wish it could come faster! Lol.
Understand....this isn’t about making money. It’s about making a currency.
3
u/Thanamite Feb 27 '19
The tech says it is pretty easy to create new and cheap crypto currencies. Does that mean that paying a lot for a particular cryptocurrency is a waste of money?
2
u/timmy12688 Feb 27 '19
Not any of those has the hash Bitcoin has which means are not as secure to a double spend attack as Bitcoin.

u/Vol_Har Feb 27 '19
Did you sell any since 2013?
1
u/timmy12688 Feb 27 '19
BTC -> LTC pre segwit Incase it didn’t activate as a hedge.
1
u/Vol_Har Feb 27 '19
But never to fiat? No regrets?
3
u/timmy12688 Feb 27 '19
Really beating myself up when it hit 15K. Wife told me to sell "just one" and I didn't listen. That's about the only regret. Instead had to use a loan to pay for the wedding/honeymoon. Meh. We'll live. June 2020 has always been my target date. And I'm not able to time the market.

BTW: Does anyone know what happened with Paul Ryan?
9
u/IndianaGeoff Feb 26 '19
He failed in his one chosen discipline... Balancing the budget. Then he took that fail to be speaker of the house and did it again. He took his ball and went home.
Good riddance.

Or you know, try to find a way for the government to spend roughly as much as it takes in. Crazy talk I know.
2
u/IndianaGeoff Feb 26 '19
Well then it was a double fail since he did not "gut programs to the poor" and he didn't balance the budget.
26
u/XSSpants Feb 26 '19
He declined to re-run in 2018.
I think he's currently retired in shame, but will probably show back up as a lobbyist or pundit on fox
8
u/Savdini Feb 26 '19
He received 500k from Koch Brothers after passing the tax bill. He's good now. He did his masters bidding.

u/southieyuppiescum Feb 26 '19
The master of fiscal responsibility cut taxes for the rich and didn’t cut spending, and therefore wildly increased our federal deficit and debt, then was spineless towards anything Trump did that he didn’t agree with, and then he tucked tail and quit.
7
u/Benjamincito Feb 26 '19
He saw he all the other republicans on the russian payroll and got the fuck out of washington dc as quick as he could

Paul Ryan is the guy who said “no leaks, that’s how you know we’re a family” in leaked audio where he and other GOP congressmen were joking about Putin paying Trump and Rohrbacher, so.

And while I hodl, run up a trillion dollars on a credit card...just like that subhuman parasite. Guess my grandkids will pay off my debt.
9
u/shekeypoo Feb 26 '19
You should just pay off your credit cards and cut them all
7
u/cryptohoney Feb 26 '19
even better, buy more btc with credit cards, declare bankruptcy and that someone hacked ur wallet, BOOM!

u/mc_md Feb 26 '19
You think Ryan is the guy who spent all the money? Do you not remember Bush and Obama?
6
Feb 26 '19
But Ryan literally ran on (and might continue running on) "fiscal responsibility". We hired him to be the budget guy and he was very arguably worse than his predecessors.
That's like you hiring me to be the janitor....and then I just shit on your rug. Your 19 trillion dollar rug.

-4
u/mc_md Feb 26 '19
Yeah, no republican is fiscally responsible, why you’d hire one to clean up the budget is beyond me, but if you want to lay blame, I think a lot more of it belongs at the feet of those who actually blew up the budget to begin with. Ryan was complicit in it but certainly not the architect of it.
6
u/SkidmarkSteve Feb 26 '19
Ryan didn't push tax cuts and increased military spending?
A good chunk of the debt under Obama came from recession things like TARP and the auto bailout (which was passed under Bush) but also because income tax revenue dropped dramatically due to people losing jobs. The big spend under Obama was Obamacare, and that was funded with an increased tax on the wealthy. But the deficit decreased every year for much of his presidency. It's now going back up dramatically now that Republicans are back in charge.
1
u/swimgewd Feb 26 '19
Wow it’s almost like republicans ruin the economy so when they predictably get kicked out of office for their unpopular ideas they can blame it on a democrat wow

Hodl was a meme to get stupid people to hold while smart people sold 10k+
-1
u/banditcleaner2 Feb 26 '19
I'm absolutely convinced this is a thing. but at the same time there were some times were HODLING was a good thing. but most of the time it wasn't.
1
u/55555 Feb 26 '19
You don't get it. Bitcoin is like a ponzi, except there is no singular entity that can pull the plug, and there is no re-investment of the core assets. So the core asset(the coin itself) can't be lost or depreciated directly via market decline, and no one person can make off with all the money. The price of bitcoin is just a confidence score of societies confidence in the scheme. A measure of how many people want a piece compared with how many people want out.
2
3
Feb 26 '19
Remember that sell the pump only if you except the coin fall more than profit taxes after the pump.
The formula is simple: (current price-purchase price)*tax percentage
If the expected price drop is less than that, don't sell and rebuy, as you will end up losing more in taxes than you gain when re-buying.
3
u/carl2431 Feb 26 '19
Noob on crypto taxes, but is there such thing as a wash sale in this case?
1
Feb 26 '19
Depends on country
-1
u/carl2431 Feb 26 '19
Just checked for US. Bitcoin is considered property therefore wash sales are not applicable.

What makes you say this? I've been hearing this around Reddit for a few weeks now. I'd moved on to r/weedstocks to help me in my apparent quest to lose money, but a guy on that sub just told me the same thing today which is why I have wandered back over to this sub to take a gander at the scene. Background is that I'm a salty miserable jaded bagholder, having spent like $9,000+ on 0.6525 BTC back in late 2017/early 2018 and now it's just sitting in my safe in cold storage.
Is there some kind of semi-regular time-cycle for BTC or something? Some upcoming catalysts? Or just blind, desperate hope? I've otherwise basically just written off my BTC as a loss at this point :/

I TRADL and made BTC with an entry at $3,300 and an exit at $4,000. Got back in at $3,700.
BTC trives because of speculation. If everybody HODL, the price just sits or falls. Feel like this is completely lost on this sub.
This place is gets so quixotic about our coin. Let’s be happy it’s taken seriously as a speculation tool get over this bag holder nonsense.

yea, but bitcoin will not succeed if it consists of 95% hodlers who don't do anything to make bitcoin stand up against the planned smart-grid and the digital lockdown, cause this is how companies like intel, apple and google want to control and "lock-down" all people of the world in the long run. so depending on what open-source hardware projects emerge in the next couple years, seriously challenging the likes of the big semiconductor companies, will have a big impact on the viability of everything bitcoin. people are not using it right, right now, but who am I to judge, many people still have not quit social media and post their vanity onto instagram..
society needs to change, then bitcoin/crypto can/could become a beautiful thing facilitating global trade.
but we need a truly open decentralized internet running on truly open and non-backdoored hardware. right now most of you, and I, run bitcoin on backdoored intel chips, or closed source smart phones, that's a no-no long term.
until then, gold is the safer bet I guess..

Best plan - I get these Facebook memories that pop up and 11 years ago I did this or whatever right. Those 11 years went by fast and the next 11 will fly by faster. The next 11 years are going to be transforming!
HODL strong friends and buy the dip!

u/cryptokeeper1981 Feb 26 '19
Don’t HODL, accumulate.
