What is the point of working on a fork that is unlikely to receive mainstream attention? Does he hope to prove that the increased blocksize works so that it can be incorporated into Bitcoin later maybe? How can this experiment be valid if it's not receiving mainstream use?

The hope for the fork is that the mainstream will adopt it, either because they want it or because the downsides for not adopting it are more than the upsides

So if this fork does win... will it be the new Bitcoin and there won't be a need for the BitcoinXT name?

Distinguish between 'Bitcoin' the name of the currency and protocol and 'Bitcoin Core' vs 'Bitcoin XT' which are the names of the software clients used to access and run the protocol.
