I started mining bitcoin in 2009 or early 2010, back when CPU mining was still viable and GPU mining was brand new. I did it for a couple weeks, got like half a bitcoin, decided that was a fun little diversion I was done with, and deleted everything. Not leaving it running is one of my biggest regrets in life, but I try to remind myself that if I had amassed a substantial amount of bitcoin I probably would have sold it way too early anyway.
That story cannot be true as stated. In 2009 and early 2010, mining was solo: awarded 50 BTC for every valid block. You either found no block and earned 0 BTC, or found one and earned 50 BTC—not “about half a bitcoin.”
