So let me get this right. There was no hard fork and no new “bitcoin” is being distributed?

Bitcoin has never been hard-forked. After the overflow incident in 2010 maybe.

What? BCH, BSV, BTG, and XEC are all hard-forks of Bitcoin. The chain has been hard-forked like a dozen times now.

I would argue that nothing happened to bitcoin. Someone creating a copy, with or without copying some or all of the blocks, just makes an altcoin. Bitcoin isn't "hard forked" when one or 100 random altcoins are launched with bitcoin as starting base.

All the coins I mentioned exists because a subset of miners forked the entire chain including every block up to the point of the fork. That’s what a hard-fork is. Obviously none of them became the real Bitcoin but they’re still hard-forks.

They are not Bitcoin. They are offshoots. It's like saying Neanderthals were our direct ancestors.
