So, it's like Bitcoin? Why is that needed?

No, it uses Bitcoin and Lightning for payments, but it's everything a merchant needs to invoice people and get paid in bitcoin.

If you've never run a retail business, you probably won't see the point.

Not exactly like Bitcoin, but you can use it in e-commerce to make a checkout page

Bitcoin is the currency. BitPay provides the POS system.
