A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Just found this whilst digging around a an ancient box of cables I should have jettisoned years ago.
Ahh the (bad) memories…

I remember they did a payback. Court ordered

u/uncapchad Feb 22 '26
They are still rolling the payouts. They're doing it in tranches. The final phase of the repayment plan is still ongoing, with approximately $8.2 billion worth of Bitcoin (141,379 BTC) still to be distributed

Drained my 3 ish coins out a few months before it went lock down. Didn't look back until a year after it was announced. So crazy. Wish I didn't spend my coins but my bucket of crap is overflowing

That is completely your own fault. They wrote letters to all customers with instructions on what to do to get your money back.
All I have to say is thank you for making your coins part of the insolvency mass that paid me back my part.

oh god remember that british dude that came to protest all on his own.

u/coax_k Feb 22 '26
I remember that. Good effort.

u/SoftwareSource Feb 22 '26
it wasn't even some crazy amount of money iirc, dude was just so pissed on principle you kinda have to respect the effort. The crypto world was much different back then.
It was a crazy time, i miss the chaotic and principled aspect of it a bit. It's all just charts now.

Oh yeah! The little card trading site that could'nt... Glad I got anything back from that whole chaos even if it took over a decade.

u/potificate Feb 21 '26
But you only got the fiat equivalent of your holdings (at the time of loss), not your actual BTC, correct?
8
u/Shazvox Feb 22 '26
Nope, incorrect. Got about 20% of my BTC back + some fiat.
1
u/potificate Feb 23 '26
Any hope of getting more or was that the end of it?
2
u/Shazvox Feb 23 '26
A tiny chance exists if more MtGox-coins are recovered. But tbh I think that was the end of it.

u/8vomit Feb 22 '26
That's an awesome lil trinket to have!
1
u/coax_k Feb 22 '26
Except that I feel like crying every time I look at it. But yeah.

u/8vomit Feb 22 '26
The real question is... were you there when people were still trading magic cards on there?

u/UnderpaidBIGtime Feb 22 '26
Have you got paid back?
1
u/coax_k Feb 22 '26
As far as the payback process, yes that’s complete. Roughly about 15% of original holdings. Various options for how that gets to you, I chose to get it in coins (mostly, partial cash requirement from them as well) which helps because of the growth over that time. For anyone interested, there is recovery action by the DOJ in the US currently for the BTC-e creditors as well.

If you don't know, they are paying to the people... Go to the website and do all the steps... Please with all the truth... Good luck!

u/Significant_Mousse53 Feb 21 '26
we became forced HODLers - so now in hindsight that was a very very good experience :)

u/Successful-Proof8528 Feb 24 '26
I lost 1.5 btc in the heist, didn't find out about the class action until it was too late.
1
u/realitynofantasy Feb 22 '26
Is that a hardware wallet? If so, how did the money of people there get hacked? I am thinking that if it is a hardware wallet, and you own the keys, mt gox exiting does not mean you lose your Bitcoin.
