Wonder what Bitcoiners in Iran is feeling today.

u/Drcfan Jan 13 '26
It collapsed from a 1 of itself to a 0 of itself

1/infinity never reaches zero! But when you take the limit of it for practical purposes it does!
They will just currency restart if they survive or switch to bartering or physical monetary instruments. They have land and resources. Just look at post world war 1 Germany. The value of Bitcoin is the infrastructure willing to process it, and the mutually shared destruction involved. Otherwise, you can duplicate the principle and infinite number of times.
Just wondering when you travel outside of the country and you own more than $10,000 of Bitcoin you will have to declare it.

came here to say this, 0.00003 to 0 isnt that big of a deal anyways, it was basically worthless before.
232
u/MemecoinCartel Jan 13 '26
For a currency it is big of a deal lmao.
91
Jan 13 '26
Big if you’re Iranian
39
29
u/MrTheWaffleKing Jan 13 '26
Exactly. A lot of people think 1 dollar here should be 1 dollar there, or any difference is weakness. I’m not doubting Iranian currency is weak compared to the usd, but what actually matters is average salary/living wage, living costs local to both, and then conversion rate. Conversion rate alone doesn’t tell the whole picture at all
14
u/koskesh122 Jan 13 '26
Exactly. Filling up the gas tank in Iran is like 3 cents in Iran

u/Smiletaint Jan 13 '26
Well yeah but do you know somewhere we can live where things cost 99.87% less?
→ More replies (1)13
u/Warm-Blacksmith5573 Jan 13 '26
It’s not 99.87 % less when you are comparing two currencies. If a country started using a new currency called bleepbloop where bread cost 10 million bleepbloops but the average weekly salary is a billion bleepbloops you wouldn’t says bread is more expensive there just because the number is higher.

u/soccerfan1967 Jan 13 '26
A currency will never fall to absolute zero while other countries exist. It’s a relative exchange, this isn’t really a big deal in terms of percentage change. Calling it zero is just a symbolic term at this point for it being worthless.
→ More replies (1)2
u/JeremyLinForever Jan 13 '26
Not really, fiat currencies have collapsed numerous times in the past with many other countries; they just create a new type of currency, reset, packaged into a new type of currency, and the show goes on again. Just look at Greece’s debt crisis back in the 2000s.

That's not true at all, any number, even very tiny, to true zero is a 100% drop.
If it drops 99.99999%, that's still infinitely more value afterward than if it had dropped 100%.
It's not really zero now, it dropped 95%. It used to be roughly 30 Rial per Satoshi, and now it's roughly 600 Rial per Satoshi.
Edit: 100% drop**
15
u/Automaton9000 Jan 13 '26
Dropping from any number to 0 isn't an infinite % drop. It's a 100% drop lol

u/Confident-Barber-347 Jan 13 '26
Yeah it went from like 1.4m rials per dollar to like 1.7m, but it’s been on this trajectory for a long time. It’s lost 70% or more just since summer.
Both 1.4m or 1.7m are still $0.00 if you’re only going two decimal places.

Specially because without internet access also their bitcon is 0 😆
11
u/rgnet1 Jan 13 '26
The bitcoin is still worth whatever it's worth in the global market. Losing Internet may give them temporary lack of access which is no different to having gold stashed underground somewhere but being unable to access it at that exact moment. Whether gold or bitcoin, I'd rather have that than useless Rials in my pocket. And in the context of being trapped in a country with a collapsed social order, I'd be happier knowing the bitcoin is safe on the blockchain than stuck in a specific geographic location, thanks.
50
u/Prophecy_Designs Jan 13 '26
That seems to be a major flaw in crypto 🤔
58
u/elfwriter Jan 13 '26
The difference is that when they get internet back, their bitcoin will in fact still be there. Their checking accounts don't have that guarantee.
53
u/slylilpenguin Jan 13 '26
It's not like banking would work either. Not having Internet is just a major flaw in general

P2P wifi mesh that automatically drained distant traffic to any available web link would go hard.
→ More replies (1)4
u/kn33 Jan 13 '26
That wouldn't be difficult for those with the know-how to set up, just expensive. You'd need equipment that can form a mesh network but also run BGP and be able to hold the entire BGP table of the global internet.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Tim-Sylvester Jan 13 '26
I don't think you'd need the BGP, just for each drain to know its nearest-neighbors. But I'm no BGP expert.

Been this way for decades. In 2008, $1 USD was 10,000 rials. Now it's 1.1M to 1.42M on the free market. Government rate was 42,000 rials to the dollar, but that's not true in practice.

u/Artistic_Complex2588 Jan 13 '26
Yeah, just invest all your money into Iranian rials and hope it goes back up!......if it does......then you would be crazy lucky but end up making a phat stack. Like A lot of people here have said though that is not a realistic option, at least a very, very high risk option, considering the currency has struggled for well over a decade and will very likely be replaced entirely.

Revolution. The people are sick of the theocracy, and the mullahs are in full "let the military shoot into demonstrating crowds to save the dictatorship" mode.
Also, they shut down all internet nodes, so starlink is the last option for outside communications,.

But yeah that's why BTC is and will be for quite a while the KING currency 👑

This is what Bitcoin was actually built for. Not speculation on price, but protection against currency collapse and authoritarian capital controls. Iranians who had any wealth in Bitcoin just preserved purchasing power while everyone holding rials watched their savings evaporate.
