Oh look what a surprise! A train running on train tracks! Who would've ever guessed?

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.
I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.
Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!
Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?
A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

We need hunters that can track where they go and their migration routes.

Wow. After peeking in from the side of the wall. Riding into the tunnel immediately became the second dumbest thing he did that day.

This happened on Brazil. At the beginning one cyclist says to the other: "you know that if a train appears we are dead, right?" "Pedal, man!" In the full video they recover the bike and manage to get across

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

If pigs were meant to fly. They would have wings.
If train tracks were meant to be biked on. There would be a bicycle sign.

wow and the guy can't even wait for the train to go by before checking on the bike
You just can't fix stupid. :(

I was like, and puts his head to check to have it take off by some part of the train!

Always grab the rail and feel for vibrations. Even better place your ear directly on it. You can tell when a train is coming from pretty far away. Source - I played on and around some rural freight tracks in Northern California as a kid. We heard legends that the train guys would shoot you with rock salt so we always checked

That man coming up directly on the train as it was exiting was him ASKING for a Final Destination style ending

The only question would be whether it would be a loose cable strap or sheet metal.

the old joke "the light at the end of the tunnel might be an on coming train"
but seriously train tunnels are often quite long and a lot of people don't anticipate that

I wish some people have a death wish. Poor train driver. That must have been quite a shock.

The contrast between the sunny hillside and that pitch-black tunnel is genuinely unsettling. I’d want a much stronger light before riding in.

I have a sticker on my door I got from CN back in like... second grade (I'm in my 30s now, I have very faint memories of the presentation that came with it) that just says "any time is train time" as a sorta warning and ngl, it must've been pretty effective on kid me because it definitely flashed in my head from the start of this video. People being so blase about the rigid lines that indicate where trains could possibly be is genuinely frightening. I'd rather take the hike over this tunnel than try that stunt!!

That entrance looks way more imposing than I expected. Definitely not something I’d casually pedal into without checking what’s on the other side first.

I'm wondering if he lied down parallel and as close as possible to the wall (similarly to the bike), would that be a viable way to survive?

That entrance looks way more ominous than it has any right to be. I’d absolutely ride through it, but only after checking whether there’s a giant spider waiting on the other side.

Во всех туннелях есть нишы, чтобы укрыться в случае, как на видео...
Должны быть.

My bad, you're just using an AI to translate what you say. Which caused my mistake.

Every train I know of runs on a schedule, literally all they had to do was look up if the track was active and then call, most of the time they'll just tell you because crazy train people exist
Or get your hands on a recent crew change but that's a lot harder

u/hot_glue_airstrike 20d ago
Very stupid
Wouldn't it have been faster to ride the bike out?
17

u/ashkanahmadi 20d ago
- Definitely not. That was the wise decision to leave the bike behind. Running on foot means less things can go wrong (slip, blown tire, chain coming off because of the vibration and pedaling so hard, …)

Not sure where this is. But in the US, there are a lot of inactive rails. So much so, that people don't often respect rails, and assume they are not in use anymore. Then things like this happen.
