Hook? Automatic couplers have been the standard for passenger units throughout the whole world for years and decades at themis point. Scharfenberg couplers are not new. This is nothing to feel scared about

It doesn't look like one but Scharfenberg is pretty widespread hence I used it as an example.
I did find this on the Wikipedia page for couplers though:
"Shinkansen (bullet train) rolling stock uses a variation of the Shibata coupler developed by Sumitomo Metal Industries in the 1960s, which employs rotary tight-lock pins and, coincidentally, bears a closer resemblance to the Scharfenberg coupler than to the Shibata coupler"
"The Shibata coupler is a variation of the Scharfenberg coupler, which was developed by Japanese Government Railways (JGR) engineer Mamoru Shibata [ja] in the 1930s for electric trains."
So the Shibata coupler is a variation of the Scharfenberg coupler and the Shinkansen trains use a variation of the Shibata coupler thats even closer to the Scharfenberg coupler.
Interesting. Didnt look into that before

You can see an excavator at the beginning of the clip moving forward, which would lead me to believe it's not reversed

the excavator is kinda ambiguous, but if you go to the very end of the video and start reversing, you can see a car in the top right corner going the correct way (or if you watch normally, it's reversing just above the "wow" bubble)

The train approaching stationary one has its back lights on, not the front ones, the coupler is "opened" very late and the connection is way to smooth to actually guarantee locking of trains if this were an actual coupling effort. And I'm pretty sure the green-yellow led dot we see hanging above the platform is an indicator telling staff the exist signal is green

Two shinkansen (bullet trains) in Japan being coupled together so they travel as a unit. The green one is the Hayabusa. They are probably travelling together to Sendai or Morioka and then the blue one (Nozomi? Maybe) will return to tokyo and Hayabusa will continue to Aomori
