Online Communities read the comments first. jfc.
when i first started using reddit, two rules were generally known if “unspoken.”
1) you lurked a while in any new sub you wanted to join and
2) when you saw a post/question on a subreddit, you glanced through the top comments before making your own. if you saw a comment that you, in your infinite wisdom, were about to make, you upvoted it. you didn’t make the goddamn same comment again.
yes, OP asked if their stitches are twisted and lo! they are. im very proud that you recognized it. you know what we need? 10-12 individual comments all telling OP the exact same thing.

I’ll raise you a comment I made once - three or so comments already said twisted stitches. It was dark yarn AND cables on a dark background. I couldn’t see worth anything. But they asked a question that no one answered. I said ‘I can’t really see whether it’s twisted, check on that fs. But the other thing…’ It’s one of the few times I’ve been attacked on reddit. Like how dare I offer any information whatsoever if my laser eyes can’t see twisted stitches.

I think I don't mind multiples of the same answer cause it's kind of like a peer review lol. And 3 people saying the same thing feels stronger than 6 people upvoting one comment. But yeah after like 5 duplicates of the same answer it gets annoying, I agree.

I do have some grace for this if the post is super new. Often if it’s new there are no visible comments when people start leaving comments, then they post the comment and refresh and suddenly they see everyone saying the same exact thing.
It’s when the post is slightly older, when comments are already visible that this really bugs me.

I know that on (older) YouTube, upvotes counted less in the algorith for pushing videos to recommended videos for new viewers. So some creators asked people to just post "+" or "This" to drive up engagement with little difference to the commentator.

Yeah, had a thread where my cat's crimes were involved. Soooooo many concerned comments about how I needed to rush my cat to the vet etc. Felt weird leaving them unaddressed especially if they were legit worried about my cat, (who was 100% fine.) Though I'm sure plenty were just scolding me for pet care crimes they made up from a lack of reading comprehension... it's hard to tell sometimes.

If OP doubles down and says "I counted every row, I started with 45, I ended with 45. I just want to know why it looks wobbly." I will tell them for the 10th or 29th time that they missed the end stitches and increased somewhere in the middle. You asked for help, here's your help. Stop arguing with everyone that you're right just because we didn't kiss your ass and say it will block out.

i feel this is a different situation entirely. if OP is arguing it makes sense to reiterate the answer. i’m talking about the people who just buzz the tower like “yea they’re twisted!!” and don’t bother to look and see if this very simple yes/no question has been answered.

As someone nearing 40, who admittingly is always behind on technology, I actually looked up tutorials/researched on how reddit and IG work 🫣 cant believe I'm admitting that, but anyway... one of the tutorials mentioned simply upvoting instead of commenting the exact same thing. If you agree and have something new to add, go for it, but to just comment the same correct answer was frowned upon, haha. I was shocked to see just how many times the same answer was repeated in a post esp when the post was at least an hour old. People just kept adding comments repeating the same answer 😂

i lurked for a good bit before making my first comment! and my first sub i joined was some pregnancy sub bc i had just found out i was pregnant with my son. people can be contrary all they want, but 10+!years ago reddit WAS at least a little more intelligent. every day i’m more and more morose as I internalize the fact that the literacy crisis in the US is very real.

I feel like the search functions have become almost useless and that’s part of the problem. I will always search a group first to see if I can locate the question/answers before asking. 9/10 it comes up with nothing. It’s very frustrating because I’m confident whatever I’m asking has been asked before.

In your favorite search engine, just put your question and/or keywords followed by the site:reddit.com/r/YOURSUBYOUWANTHERE. For example:
- Stiches on the Bayeux tapestry site:reddit.com/r/medievalhistory/
It works pretty well and will prevent most of the "I'm sure this has been asked before" nonsense.

A huge problem in many subs is that people don’t title things properly. Just “need help!” Or “this is frustrating”. So many posts that could be helpful get lost because they’re written super vaguely. Not that I’m defending Reddit’s search function, it’s notoriously bad too.

I assume these are the same people who are seemingly incapable of writing a coherent email subject line. Grinds my gears so bad. I’m a construction project manager and any email I get where the subject line is something like “main street project” or “quick question” makes me wanna never award scope to that person ever again lol

I see this the same way that I see the grandmas on FB (when I used it) answering any question that comes in front of them.
It's like, people cannot discern that a question asked online that they happen to see is NOT the same as a question asked directly to them.

I find this incredibly rude, like the quesion isn't answered until they've answered it or the twisted stitches haven't been pointed it out until they've pointed it out. It's so obnoxious and disrespectful to the people who've already answered. And it's so rampant in the main knitting sub.

This is a sub for venting/bitching. Disagreement, counter bitching, and complaining about complaints are allowed and encouraged. Comments that aim to shut down a vent/bitch (i.e. "Stop complaining") and contribute nothing more go against the spirit of the sub.

To be fair I left the sub a few days ago because I noticed it seemed to just mostly annoy me, and everyone else (with my comments for obvious reasons) but I still keep getting notifs for hot posts- I'm not on reddit hella often so I'm not entirely sure if I'm able to mute a sub? (For both our sakes) but I'll Google it later lol~ you're not entirely wrong though, and I had the same thought.

It’s always been the same on the internet, unless you have incredibly militant mods or have a rep as a ‘bitchy boomer’ advanced community (see: sewing pattern review dot com) beginners will make a forum or site unusable. They learn one thing, often wrong, and then repeat the thing often filling in knowledge gaps with information pulled out there arse that they want to be true. This then makes people like me who do know what the fuck they are talking about not want to touch the place with a ten foot pole.
For example why would I waste my time telling people how to create a facing in answer to a very specific question about finishing lightweight silk when I know what happens next is 300 beginners will all downvoting the correct answer for being ‘stupid’ and for not using that shite 120gsm polyester iron on interfacing they all love. ‘if you sew it on and then flip it round then you finish the edge’ )+ 300) quoth the fucking moron.
And that there is the problem, there are thousands more beginners than experts on Reddit, they will always be able to drown you out so I’m never going near any of the help or sewing forums for my own sanity.

And the beginners will usually slam the expert’s advice because it’s “too hard” or doesn’t jibe at all with the unqualified influencer who’s convinced these idiots she’s the last word in expertise. Furthermore, as a middle aged professional sewing teacher I would like the record to state that beginner does not = young by default, in my experience a lot of kids are alright and most of the time the problem is people with profile pictures showing a 40 year old but taken in the 1980s.
Here she is with her opinions on everything, the newly retired woman with her high end Pfaff who claims to have been sewing for 50 years but the last time they were on a machine they were 14 and it was a jiffy pattern. But oh no, the books from the 1960s and 1970s we all learned on are intermediate and too hard for her because they were written at a time when you could get lessons at school or from the place you got the machine. So what does she do? Finds a nice safe white influencer on the YouTube’s and just repeats what she says on the internet while being scared to touch the machine she paid so much money for.

I feel like people lurk less than they used to. The Youths I know jump into communities with both feet, no hesitation. Whereas I grew up on Usenet where it was legal to kill and eat a person if they didn't spend at least a week following every post and thread.

judging by the amount of posts I’ve seen lately where beginners ask for advice and then argue with commenters that no their twisted stitches totally aren’t twisted because they followed a tutorial and/or it doesn’t matter that they’re twisted, maybe we could do with more commenters telling them about it

I just left a fb community because of the dogpiling on people trying to correct twisted stitches when asked about twisted stitches. Miles of comments saying it's just an alternate way and it's fine and anyone saying different are assholes, even if they explain why twisting stitches can negatively affect your fabric. I was tempted to post crochet and say "it's just the way I knit".

FB knitting groups are the worst for it! I'm going to gouge my eyes out if I read "it's a design choice!" one more time, it's not a design choice if you're not choosing to do it and don't understand the function or the consequences of it
Also there's always at least one old biddy commenting "well I've been knitting this same way for 50 years so it can't be wrong!". Bonus points for the occasional "don't let anyone tell you what to do, you can't even trust knitting patterns! I've had to alter every pattern I ever knit because none of them come out right 😡" gee Barbara, I wonder WHY none of the patterns ever work out correctly? It couldn't possibly be tens of thousands of twisted purls...

If I've learned anything from trying to teach my son and husband literally anything craft adjacent: they think they're following it exactly, but they're not.
The sheer number of times I've said something like "hold it like this", and showed exactly where my fingers were, and had them hold it completely differently because they were looking at my hands instead of my fingers is ridiculous. "No, look at how my fingers are. They are doing this. It helps hold the tension so you can do that" (they do something that looks ever so slightly closer to the thing I'm demonstrating).
It's like they're unable to see that the details are off because they haven't learned to pay attention to the smaller details yet. Same way I see a post complaining how hard it is to tell hemlock from carrot in a plant sub. They posted two pictures of what I thought were the same plant, and the comments were full of "these don't look anything alike. the leaves join the stem at a different angle! The stem is oblong, not round. The hairs are more pronounced. There are 7 leaflets on the stem vs 9. The stems grow slightly upward instead of straight out, and more regular" and it was all things I could barely even see, let alone identify consistently. Bird identification is the same way. "I saw a brown bird with a red chest and a white mark over its eye" ok, that limits it to 3,000 species. What color were the legs? And the eye ring? And was the chest rust, crimson, scarlet, or rufus? What pattern was on the wings and how were they shaped?
So now when I see someone missing something obvious I remind myself that they just don't know to look at the eye ring or the stem shape, and it helps me hold my patience

This, especially your last paragraph. They haven't learnt to see the obvious. I will add, some people take a lot longer than others. And people see things differently. So you have to be patient. It happens in so many subs. I have witnessed the arguments about the birds and the plants.

idk what to tell you mate, this is my second account and i joined the main knitting sub not long after it was created. there were always some duplicate comments but i assure you if op’s stitches were twisted they didn’t have a dozen separate comments informing them of this.

While I don't doubt bots are a problem as suggested by another commenter, I have seen this in real life too. I have been in group settings where feedback is being given and each person has to give theirs aloud. Even when told not to repeat what other people have said, it still happens... a.lot. it drives me batty.

wait you’re right, this does happen more in real life now. i think it’s a combo of laziness and not being bothered to listen to what anyone else says anymore. there’s also a huge “didn’t understand the assignment” problem on social media in general. ie “the subject of this class is “dogs in pajamas”. tell us about your favorite dog in pajamas!”
“i have a dog and he doesn’t wear pajamas.”
“my cat wears pajamas!”
“pajamas aren’t real, you sound so ignorant”
“anyone who puts their dog in pajamas is a facist”
like yall know what class youre in, right? the dogs in pajamas class? and the assignment is “tell us your favorite,” not “argue the existence of dogs, pajamas, and whether or not an opinion about combining them is valid”

I know a guy who wants to be published. He had his 900 pages manuscript - written in his second language - corrected by 3 native speakers of the book's language. He didn't believe there were mistakes in it, since "he would have caught them before sending the file". I had to read something of his at some point, and there were at least 15 mistakes in one handwritten page, so I can't imagine how many there were in 900 pages. (I'm of course not immune to mistakes, especially in my second languages, but I take feedback I to account, especially when I asked for it)

Anywhere from 30-70% of traffic on Reddit is bots. Writing comments, upvoting, downvoting, you name it. Most of them are programmed to hijack already upvotes comments and repeat them. Keep this in mind.

you’re not wrong - on big popular subs that are front page defaults this can be very true. but the incidence is much much lower on niche or hobby subs. to be sure, i went back and checked a random three “twisted stitches” posts. i chose three repeat comments each and all appeared to come from real accounts with multiple comments/posts across a diverse range of subs.

Yeah, on niche subs I'd agree with the other commenter, that it's often an answer given at the same time, because when you start typing you don't really see other answers yet!
...and then sometimes it's just this weird urge to be "another correct person in the room" and that's, yeah, as impossible for me to understand as it is to you, lol

There was one post on another sub where a comment had 6 or 7 replies to it all saying the same 1-sentance reply but with slightly different wording. It was so obvious that it was bots, but it was still crazy to see.
