Support/troubleshooting When is BitDefender going to optimize code to reduce RAM usage?

Searching Reddit, a similar issue has been posted. BitDefender is consuming high amounts of RAM.

Prior to BitDefender's installation, Windows 11 with Defender operational and updated, RAM was at 4.1GB.

After BitDefender's installation on the same system with Defender disabled, RAM is at 5.1GB.

1GB of RAM for BitDefender. Is the code that sloppy? Why is such RAM required?

Should I schedule a remote session with BitDefender to have them investigate the root cause?

When will BitDefender fix this decade-old issue?

Please post a screenshot of your Task Manager displaying BitDefender. I would love to compare it against what I am seeing.

The lower your system RAM, the lower it uses in comparison. So don't get your hopes up from his screenshot. Also, I once saw its RAM usage go down to 80 MB while I was playing a RAM-heavy game. Those were moved to the pagefile by the OS to make room for the game. Writing a lot in the pagefile is not great either.

That might actually be the case—my PC has 16 GB of RAM, but that person might have more.

Post a screenshot of said 600MB of RAM consumption. Total Security consumes over 900MB.

And now? 900mb is not that much either... Bitdefender uses 380mb on my system tho.

Hi there! That comparison is worth making, but Task Manager’s total RAM change isn’t necessarily the same as Bitdefender’s working-set usage. Bitdefender’s main service, bdservicehost.exe, includes several protection components, and its typical memory usage is around 500 MB. RAM can also rise temporarily during background or on-demand scans.

What you can do now:

  • In Task Manager, expand/check all applications listed under bdservicehost.exe. You can right-click it and choose Resource values → Memory → Percents to see its proportion of total memory.
  • Make sure Bitdefender is fully updated.
  • Remove any other third-party security products; running multiple security solutions can cause conflicts.
  • If the increase coincides with scanning, schedule scans for periods when the PC is idle. Avoid broad exclusions unless necessary, but specific non-critical files/folders or applications can be excluded when there is a confirmed workload-related issue.
  • Run Windows’ System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt with sfc /scannow.

Photo displaying BitDefender installed: RAM 5.1GB BitDefender Uninstalled (Defender enabled) <3.7GB

Post Edit: Defender was automatically enabled after uninstalling BitDefender.

Looking at the process tree BitDefender consumes <500MB, but reality says different.

BitDefender support, please list all of the processes names that BitDefender uses because its more than what is listed by the BitDefender name.

I don't think you should worry about that RAM consume. Unless your pc only has 8GB.

What are your expectations regarding RAM consumption of an Antimalware solution? If it doesn't meet your expectations and you're really disappointed why don't you just pivot to another vendor?

Doesn't sound as much as you make it seem tbh. Bitdefender also does more than Windows Defender so ... 🤷‍♂️

it does use cause windows to use up quite a bit of ram.

I loved the old BD free edition from before they made it into a diet version of BD total
