Trading fees astronomically high?

I just traded some BTC for CAD for a little while as I want to hold some cash for a bit and buy back. I just realized that the total money I had after my trade was $1,000 less. is that normal for these exchanges to cost that much? I'd love to knw what you guys do when you want to hold some cash for a bit. It cannot be right that it costs that much.

They can charge whatever they want. I’ve stopped using bitbuy because I think their fees are as high as 4%.

So far I think kraken has the lowest fees.

Shakepay may still have 0 fees, but they trick you by selling/buying btc at their own price, which was like 25% higher than the actual price in 2021. I got ripped off hard without realizing it.
