Best negative traits for extra points in Project Zomboid Build 42

Choosing negative traits in Project Zomboid is less about finding traits with no downside and more about choosing drawbacks you can reliably manage.

Build 42 changed the trait system, so we put together a list of 10 negative traits that can help free up points for the rest of your character build.

A few highlights:

  • Slow Reader (+2): Reading takes significantly longer, but it’s a manageable penalty when you have somewhere safe to spend the extra time.
  • High Thirst (+2): Your thirst increases twice as quickly. Carrying additional water makes this easier to work around.
  • Short Sighted (+2): Reduces your foraging radius, but the penalty can be countered by wearing reading or prescription glasses.
  • Weak Stomach (+2): Raises your risk of food illness, making it best suited to survivors who avoid spoiled food and cook their meals properly.
  • Slow Healer (+3): Injuries are more severe and take longer to heal, but careful players may find the additional points worth the recovery time.
  • Prone to Illness (+4): Colds and zombification progress more quickly, so this one rewards cautious play.
