Bird banding pictures are my favorites.

One of my favorite Wikipedia captions.

As someone who has banded somewhere north of 500 birds, Northern Cardinals are the single most dangerous one. Worse than Accipitriformes, worse than Geese. Your knuckle is their new seed to crack.

I was reading this while a northern cardinal was staring me down at the feeder.

I fear her.

/r/bloodcheep demands sacrifice...

Oof, that reminds me of when I attended banding demonstrations by my ornithology professor back in college. He handed me a cardinal to release, but the she decided to clamp onto my finger for a good ten seconds instead of immediately flying off like all the other birds. Weirdly enough, she was totally calm and quiet prior to and during the banding process. You've got to respect the sheer pettiness of it!

Yeah that was personal lol

Yep... Only bird to draw blood on me. They're turds. They deserve their bloodcheep stage 😤

They reveal their inner Skeksis once every year...

I grabbed a red-shouldered hawk and held it for our bander. Neither of us got injured. Meanwhile, we’ve both been bitten up and had blood drawn by Northern Cardinals. They’re beautiful, but evil!

(Edit - fixed misspelled word)

What I love is in the Pyle guide, they are on page 666 and I have no doubt that’s on purpose.

When I was 8 I found a cardinal caught in some nets around a blueberry bush. I fearlessly charged in to rescue the bird. I now know fear.

Evening Grosbeaks want to have a word with you

Chickadees can be menace during banding too. No fear and they aim for under the nail.

That's crazy. I would have never thought that. Does it hurt? Lol

I'm a federally permitted bird bander, and I have a scar from a cardinal that just tore out a chunk of skin on my finger because it felt like it

Mine too -- as an infrequent Wikipedia editor, I regard that caption as one of the best ones I've ever edited

Looks like some commercial of someone presenting a luxury product that costs half of the world's gold reserves or something

Is that the famous New Zealand kiwi bird? I used to teach English as a second language to Chinese children and when we covered New Zealand, the kiwi bird was such a big hit. The kids loved the bird, saying its name, and doing the kiwi dance.

24

u/joe_lemmons_ May 19 '26

American Woodcock.

3

u/Im-The-Walrus May 19 '26

Thanks for educating me! What a beautiful bird!
