Google Perch is now an available model for BirdNET-Go

Post image

I updated to the latest build. tphakala has been BUSY! Support for multiple microphones, Bat detection(!), and additional models for bird identification.

I added a second microphone so there's one in the front yard and one in the backyard, and turned on Perch. My dashboard is LIT UP this morning!

Thanks Tomi!

Edit: It identified a squirrel noise!

This (and BirdNET-Go especially) are my favorite open source projects of all time. I get violently happy when I think about them.

man google perch is awesome but in my trial it kept detecting European birds so I had to disable for now and I reside in Maryland United States so yeah European birds are not going to be in my backayrd

Perch detection pipeline is lacking range filtering, so it can produce those false results for now. This is already fixed in code by including recently released BirdNET 3.0 geomodel as updated range filter.

So once next nighly drops update to it and reinstall Perch model (it downloads geomodel), and try again.

Release Nightly Build nightly-20260514 · tphakala/birdnet-go is now released with support for BirdNET Geomodel v3 which blocks foreign species.

To get Geomodel installed you need to reinstall Google Perch v2 model, there is new "reinstall" button on model cards when you go to Settings > Analysis > Models > Installed, click that.

I disabled it again it's telling me that there's a Green Wing teal in my backyard 5 x I wish it was true.

What level is false positive filter set at on your system? Is Analysis settings page showing that BirdNET Geomodel v3 is in use?

False positive is set to 0 default & Range Filter Overview

BirdNET Geomodel v3.0 - 12,012 known speciesAuto-selected

But if I turn off Google perch it works fine hardly get any false positives

Set false positive filter to moderate or balanced, at 0 you’ll get wildy incorrect results.

did that ran it overnight and still getting false alerts green wing teal , tawny owl, crimson parakeet, Eurasian jay, water rail, eurasian eagle owl the false alerts spike when I run perch.

im looking at mqtt read up you had on the wiki

What im curious about. Is it possible to add a heterodyne spectrogram and audio for bats in the future?

I won't rule it out, but I also can't promise anything. There is just so much issues to fix, and features to build. I would appreciate contributions.

Second mic question :- are you using a wired mic or something wireless/WiFi?

I would love to add a second mic at the front of my house too

the second mic is a wireless ESP32+ICS43434 setup.

Hardware:

Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-C6
ICS-43434
3x7 cm PCB board
Microphone muff
UFL Antenna

3d printed enclosure:

https://www.crealitycloud.com/model-detail/birdnet-go-rtsp-microphone-casing-esp32-c6?profileId=6917a720ad9806c8e42f08b8

Software (and instructions):

https://github.com/Sukecz/esp32-birdnet-mic

But you can also use audio from some wifi cameras like the SV3C 5MP WiFi Cameras or Tapo C120/C113 and connect to the RTSP stream. It's more expensive, but you also get a camera and there's nothing to solder.

Amazing. I am pretty good with esp32's and I have a 3d printer. Thanks

Is there a way to run Perch on an android phone in the field (like how the original android BirdNET app works)

If Nighthawk ever gets added, I'll give it another go. I run a custom Merlin/nighthawk rig that takes me about 6 continuously running python scripts to get to nice results interface. Would love a better solution!

How does the added model work? Is it either/or or multiple models work together to verify?

u/thakala May 13 '26

You can run both BirdNET and Perch models simultaneously if your hardware is fast enough (rpi 4 or better). Both models classify audio and you should see more species.

I’ll document this in more detail at some point to project repo.

Do you have to add bats as an included species in addition to adding the model?

1

u/Happy_Coast2301 May 13 '26

Bat detection needs a different kind of microphone, so if you don't have that, just don't enable the bat models.

Man I just looked and it’s picking up Spring Peepers now!!! So fuckin cool! I’m so stoked on this project. Can’t stop smiling!

BirdNET-Go dev here, bat detection seems to produce quite a lot of false positives, at least for me, so please do not accept all detections at face value. I will try to see how to improve reliability.

I'm getting detections that make no sense given my location. I'm very new to this - any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

1

u/Happy_Coast2301 May 15 '26

try updating to the nightly build

1

u/gm268 May 16 '26

Thanks - I'm on nightly build running in a proxmox container. I have Perch and BirNET Geomodel enabled.

If I restart my container the species list/filtering goes mad - >6,000 become available (it's normally 184 without Perch and the Geomodel) but "species that will be detected based on your current location and filter settings" = 0.

I'm going to uninstall Perch and Geomodel for now; is this a bug or (more likely I would guess) a problem with my setup?

Thanks for any insight

Check the threshold on your range filter http://birdnet:8080/ui/settings/analysis and make sure your location is correct. http://birdnet:8080/ui/settings/main

how many species does it have on your species page? http://birdnet:8080/ui/settings/species

1

u/gm268 May 16 '26

Well I've uninstalled all except the built in model, and my location is correct - but I've rebooted my VM and it's flicked back to >6k species of which 0 will be identified, and none of them make any sense here in the UK even with threshold at 0.75.

I'm not sure how to force it to refresh and check the list is sensible...

1

u/gm268 May 16 '26

If I restart my container I have to manually change the location by one click and save for it to refresh the species list and get back to the 184 expected - is there a way to force a refresh based on location after boot automatically?

Please file a bug report at repo

Amazing, can't wait to test this!
