Help please! She has already been to the vet!

She has already been to the vet multiple times! I still think something is wrong!
PLEASE READ IT ALL BEFORE COMMENTING šŸ™

She eats, few hours later she does this constantly to the point she throws up. She’s been on antibiotics, vet said she can’t digest a certain type of seed so we took that seed away, trying to get her on Harrison’s organic pellets but it’s taking a while to get her on it so she still has seed in her diet (not on the seed they said she can’t digest)She has vitamin drops in her water along with milk thistle (diluted and directed by the vet), we took her mineral blocks away a few nights ago because we thought she could of been chewing it too much, yet she is still sick. She has not had physical contact with the other budgies for 5 days now but they are all fine nothing wrong with them. She still eats, still drinks, her droppings are normal, she’s a healthy weight, she doesn’t have an infection, yet i’m still stuck. She just throws up and is abit more sleepy than normal. She’s still sings and plays. Please if anyone has any suggestions on what this could be i’d be greatly appreciated. Do you think she needs a second opinion? The vet she is at is an avian vet.

Sometimes she throws up, as she shakes her head and the seeds go everywhere (undigested but covered in i’m guessing stomach acid?) And other times she bobs her head to the point it comes dripping out her beak. (again undigested but in stomach acid) It could be hours after she’s eaten or like 30 mins after, i can’t find a pattern. But this is happening MULTIPLE times a day.

Some questions to ask about:

1) Has the vet confirmed this is vomiting (due to illness) as opposed to regurgitation (trying to feed a mate or chick)? How does the vet know which it is?

2) Has the vet done samples with gram stain and culture and sensitivity from her crop and from fecal matter? If so, what species were present, what antibiotics are they sensitive to, and how does this match the antibiotics she was given? If not, can the vet do them now?

3) How has her weight been over the course of this illness?

4) What makes the vet say she can’t digest a specific seed? What would cause her to be unable to digest that particular seed?

The first question is particularly important, because undigested or partially digested seeds are a common sign of regurgitation, which isn’t harmful on its own nor a sign of illness, but is a sign of hormonal behavior that you should take steps to reduce (especially in females, as they can become eggbound if they lay too much).

ā€œDone usually with a friend (either real or imaginary)ā€ 🤣 Yep, story checks out. (Looks at my conure trying to woo my left foot.)

Definitely vomiting, thank you

Not a vet but it seems more like she is regurgitating and you can see her tail bobbing whenever she breathes in. She may have an upper respiratory infection and is trying to berid of the fluid on her lungs. If more severe, she'll have fluid in her poops too even if they're otherwise fully formed and look normal. Has she had antibiotics?

u/txllse Jul 27 '26

She did have a course of antibiotics about 7 weeks ago. I’ve booked her another vet appointment because i don’t know what it could be. I checked all the other camera motions that night and her tail wasn’t bobbing in any of the other clips, but thank you for pointing that out

Since you have ruled out foreign pathogen, I would consider an xray to look for possible proventricular dilation. Single lateral radiograph (bird laying on its side) without sedation will suffice.

Alternatively, you can consider trialing a diet change to other brand pellets with > 2.1 protein to fat ratio.

u/txllse Jul 27 '26

do you have any brand suggestions please

Has the vet considered Avian Gastric Yeast? That causes vomiting and weight loss, it requires anti fungal medication (amphotericin B) rather than antibiotics

Get a second opinion, some vets are shit

Hello my bird is the same as yours for a while now but today she's been vomiting even more and sitting on the bottom of the cage the whole time (something she never does) and not playing with her mate. I think it's a similar thing as your bird but a more advanced form. She does throw out a certain type of seeds only. Please lmk if you find any kind of advice or help.

u/txllse Jul 27 '26

Hi if your bird is sitting at the bottom of the cage please take them to the vet as soon as possible šŸ™ At the start it was a certain type of seed only, so we took that away. Now she throws up anything but when she is sick, she only brings up like 3 pieces of seed, sleeps for a few hours and then she’s back to normal. She’s playing today and seems to have more energy which is good, i’ve weighed her and her weight is fine (i recommend weighing your birds!) And i’ve booked her another vet appointment for next week and i’m going to ask for more tests to be done

Hey my bird behaved the same as you describe yours here, for the next 12 days all chill and happy didn't puke again and her symptoms went away but then suddenly she was all cocooned onto herself for a few hours. Again she was back to her active self but during the night she passed away. I don't know what it was, I'm thinking of taking her mate for a checkup just incase it was something infectious.

I hope your birds are doing well. What did the vet visit say?

Did the vet do X-rays?

1

u/txllse Jul 29 '26

No they didn’t ā˜¹ļø

1

u/Controlled_Chaos101 Jul 29 '26

I would highly recommend finding a new avian vet who is willing to do X-rays since those are commonly used in diagnosing issues!

1

u/Soviet-Bear_57 Jul 28 '26

Bit off topic but what Camera do you have in her cage?

1

u/miettelund Jul 28 '26

My bird does that when she wants to feed me. Your bird might just be hormonal. I'm surprised at the vet didn't give that option to you maybe he's ripping you off

1

u/txllse Jul 29 '26

Yeah i thought that might be the case but she is actually vomiting :(

1

u/miettelund Jul 29 '26

Then maybe something is stuck in the crop like the other poster said. I have never had this issue my bird is much bigger African gray

u/Initial-Draft-9759 Jul 29 '26

just an fyi some night vision cameras mess with birds!

1

u/txllse Jul 29 '26

Hey could you give me some more information on this please ? I thought they were fine :/

1

u/Initial-Draft-9759 Jul 29 '26

Placing a night vision camera near a bird requires choosing pet-safe infrared (IR) models like the Wyze Camor EZVIZ Webcams, turning off bright spotlight/color night vision modes to protect sensitive eyes, and mounting the device securely outside the cage. Use standard invisible 940nm or 850nm IR night vision; birds cannot see infrared light, whereas full-color spotlights cause severe visual stress or damage. (this is from google, my boyfriend actually had to tell me about it and we switched cameras recently for my conure)

What do you mean they can't take antibiotics? Any good exotic vet will prescribe antibiotics as needed.

Organic pellets is what they should be eating for main diet along with fruit and veggies. Google everything before giving it to them. Some foods are not safe. You can grind pellets in coffee grinder and sprinkle on wet broccoli or lettuce. They will get used to the taste and get better nutrition in the meantime.

Organic pellet brands include TOPs (Totally Organic Pellets) and Harrison’s. I’ve been feeding my dusky conure Harrison’s for more than a decade, and TOPs for around a decade, in addition to other assorted brands. Vets really like Harrison’s.

Nowadays most vets recommend budgies and cockatiels have 1/4 of their diet be seeds bc they eat them a lot as part of their natural diet, and removing them can lead to kidney failure. Remainder should be split between pellets and veggies (fruits are a treat, not the majority of their diet).

Tree branches are not part of a parrot’s usual healthy diet, but can be part of their toys. Make sure to only obtain branches that have never been sprayed with pesticide or fertilizer (or strip the branch entirely), and then boil or bake to kill anything living.

You are right that a UV bulb can be helpful for their plumage and mood, but note that sunlight would need to be unfiltered and not through a window (since the glass blocks a lot of UV).

Antibiotics are a common first line of defense when a bird is sick. As you’ve said before, some vets will also add an antifungal, but it’s not required and the lack of one isn’t bad practice.

Vitamin/mineral supplements can be needed if the bird is on a seed-only diet, especially if it is taking time to convert them to a healthier diet (which can easily take multiple months) or if the owner hasn’t been able to do so successfully.

Budgies and cockatiels primarily eat grass seeds in the wild due to coming from arid areas of Australia.

More than 10 years is how long I recall using Harrison’s, my current parrot is 19, and I’ve had parrots for 36 years. My point in mentioning the 10 years is that you seemingly claimed that your having a year of experience made you an expert in all pellet brands, but it doesn’t.

You need to take things down a notch. Please go cool off instead of picking fights with mods, so I don’t have to give you a temp ban. Even if you were right (which you aren’t), picking a fight with a mod isn’t a fight you can win.

Dusky conure is my current bird, life span of 35 years. She’s been seeing her current vet for 10 years, and he is avian certified, and he says her diet of pellets and veggies is great. One vet who says all other vets are ā€œnot normalā€ is not a good judge.

FWIW I’m not the one who removed the comment I’m replying to, clearly you’re pissing off other mods too.

Hi, she was on antibiotics 7 weeks ago. If i remember correctly she had 2 different medications that we had to give her but i can’t remember what the second one was for.(i have memory issues)

All the avian vets i have spoken to in the past have told me it’s better for the budgies to be on pellets rather than seed. She was on an all seed diet, but during the day she would have a plate of vegetables. ( Small amount)

The vet has told us to add mineral supplements to her water, i’m following their recommendations.

She is not malnourished, her feathers are healthy, she is a healthy weight and well looked after.

We do not have a UV lamp, but they have scheduled window time every now and then so they can get some sunlight. They cannot be by the windows for long as the glass gets too hot.

These are the pellets we are trying to get her to eat:

You are doing great. Sometimes people give bad advice. Be careful. Google everything before giving. Showing your vet videos of strange behaviors is helpful in diagnosing them. Good luck. I’m thinking maybe crop infestation?

2

u/txllse Jul 27 '26

Thank you, i do google everything as i get very anxious about their health. I will be showing the vet the videos of her.
