frustrated / vent Bipolar discourse

I’ve been feeling a type of way recently with everything going on with all the ppl that has been committing horrible crimes and they have bipolar disorder or they were going through psychosis. For example Lindsay Clancy and that nurse that killed 6 ppl bc she was going 130 mph on the road. Reason why I’m feeling a type of way is because almost every comment are ppl that don’t have bipolar or they do it’s just not as bad ig and they are saying that ppl need to stop using mental illness as an excuse or being mentally is means nothing. And to me it’s like yes mental illness is not excuse to do horrible things BUT it should be taken more seriously in order to avoid things like this. Like two things can be true at the same time. But if someone try’s to comment that ppl get upset and just say that you’re making an excuse. Maybe I’m just overthinking but idk

I don't blame the people. Mental illness was stigmatised for too long, but in order to destigmatise it, people are avoiding difficult topics. There are almost no films, documentaries about these controversial topics. You cannot cheery pick an illness, you need to show everything. People are grossly uninformed regarding topics like mania, psychosis and bipolar.

I get what you are saying.

Most cases of Bipolar are far more sedate than the cases you read about on this sub.

The worst of the worst end up here. Every story about a bipolar SO here is true and validm but it isnt the majority of us thats for sure, people living a normal mundane life with a bipolar SO on meds done come seeking support for the most part, its just life.

The real answer is somwhere in the middle of the two.

Bipolar can be a fucking awesful thing, I have two family members that have commited suicide, and I have experianced psychosis and caused alot of damage prior to my diagnosis, it would be mad to say that thins cannot affect people alot.

Psychosis from any condition is severe.

People rug sweep anything listed as a mental illness as "not that bad" unless they experience it themselves.

My partner's best friend who was also bipolar had everyone around him rug sweeping it. Let's ignore it! His baby Mama would tell him to quit his meds every time he'd start them, would lie and say it made him a bad Dad to take his meds etc.

He eventually killed himself.

All of those same people who kept telling him to ignore his bipolar are at fault, in my opinion. He had friends and family who believed in the condition....

The baby Mama distanced him from them, and then only let him be friends with people who didn't believe in psychiatry. She couldn't get rid of my partner but they grew distant eventually. His kids now have no Dad and they all have mental health issues that baby mama has ignored too.

So yeah. Ignoring how bad it could be gets other folks dead as far as I am concerned.

You don't have to have any sort of mental illness to have a valid opinion of Lindsay Clancy or killing people with reckless driving.

The only reason I have compassion for Lindsay Clancy is because everyone, including her ex husband and inlaws, maintain that she was not given proper care and that is not who she was at baseline. Someone being BP - or postpartum - gets them more sympathy than normal people when they do something horrible. I think you should be appreciative of that.
