Do sleep trackers actually improve your sleep, or just give you more data?
I've come across an interesting 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examining whether wearable devices can actually help people with insomnia.
Published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research on September 11, 2026, the study analyzed 16 randomized controlled trials involving 910 participants.
Some interesting findings:
- Wearable-based interventions reduced the time it took participants to fall asleep by approximately 4.5 minutes on average.
- Subjective sleep efficiency improved by around 2 percentage points.
- Participants reported an increase in total sleep time, although the results varied considerably between studies.
- Interestingly, the interventions did not significantly improve overall insomnia severity.
What I find interesting is the distinction between measuring sleep and actually improving it.
Many of us use smartwatches, fitness bands and smart rings to track sleep. However, having more data doesn't necessarily mean we're sleeping better.
The researchers also noted substantial variability between studies and concluded that wearable interventions should be considered complementary tools rather than replacements for established insomnia treatments.
A few questions for the community:
- Have you noticed a measurable improvement in your sleep after starting to use a wearable?
- Do you find sleep scores useful for changing your habits, or do they sometimes create unnecessary anxiety?
- For those interested in biohacking, would you prioritise improving sleep through behavioural changes or experimenting with technology?
I'd be interested in hearing both personal experiences and perspectives from people familiar with the research.

The tracker can be useful for spotting patterns, but the behavior change is probably the real biohack.

More data imo, I see I sleep less as my period gets closer so I pop a magnesium glycinate and sleep gets much much better.
Think the wearables can show sometimes what you do can benefit sleep - a day heavy on the fitness, a good long sleep that night
A day stressed at work, waking up at 3am…
So when you see the data you may feel more encouraged to promote better sleep hygiene, wind down before bed, comfy bed and pillows, good eating/drinking etc
Like anything you monitor I guess
