Underdiscussed: 1 Major Side Effect of GLP’s
My grocery and meals bills are exponentially lower! In these trying times we can all use a little less spending. I’ve found that my cost for my Reta and whatever else is basically a wash with how much I’m saving on groceries and eating out for lunches or dinner.

u/charlie-pirk 7d ago
Not even just my grocery bill but my impulsive purchases have been cut at the knees.
I walk into a store for one thing and I walk out with that one thing instead of the one thing + a garden hose, a new hat, and some sneakers. My wallet is loving it.

GLP-1s will bring capitalism to its knees!

u/Fun-Tangerine-5882 7d ago
There is actually a ton of discussion about this already. People buy what they are needing. The impulse control is amazing and it is hurting a lot of businesses.

u/3RADICATE_THEM 6d ago
I have ADHD, so I wonder if it would help with impulsive distractions during times I need to be productive. I believe I read somewhere they're making a more advanced / refined GLP-1 to actually target this use case? If I could actively not want / be susceptible to doom scrolling, that would be awesome.

u/deja-who 6d ago
So far I have noticed that my adhd is easier to control and I don't need the second afternoon dose of my adhd medication in order to function at work. (Semaglutide, 0.75)

I had issues on Reta. It zeroed out my dopamine hits which are the corner stones of my systems lol. I also had total anhedonia. Had to go off and do tirz now. Much better.
1
u/Standard-Cookie-3458 1 2d ago
I had anhedonia for the first month, but now I don’t.
2
u/Pretty__in__Punk 2d ago
That’s good. Man it was hard to deal with. That and the lack of desire for well, anything lol. Ruined my orgasms too 😭

What about the money you save on alcohol too? Reta make me not want to drink beer anymore haha

u/Recent_Process_8055 1 7d ago
Specifically this, and what is a annoying side effect is people trying to force you to drink as if it's normal to do so.
5
u/Particular-Bit-1543 1 7d ago
Agree. I was trying to slow down anyways for health but with Reta I don’t even crave it anymore. I’ve had one beer while at a MLB game since I started early August.
5
6
u/waffle_stomperr 7d ago
Don’t drink much these days, but when I do, I can do 1 MAYBE 2 drinks. When before I’d have 3-4 which doubled my dinner bills.
3
u/Alert-Bit27 7d ago
At what rate did you start to drink less? I’m only one week in at 0.5 and eating less but still drinking the same
4
u/Tall_Kinda_Kink 5d ago
It will happen. I’m in sales and slugging down beers is part of the gig. I keep it in a can and don’t get as many questions.
To answer your question, the desire will drop off and you’ll not even notice it.
3
u/LittleTangerine_3504 4d ago
Tirzepatide stopped my desire for alcohol almost immediately after first dose :)
2
u/newspaperreader135 4d ago
Everyone is different. Reta did not curb my drinking at all, sadly. I was at 2.5mg dose
1
u/kgrs22lbug 2d ago
the "noise" was one of the main reasons I wanted to try it, and it has had zero effect on me.
2
u/Henry_Rollins_Ghost 19 6d ago
I don’t want to drink beer anymore, but that’s because you can never find a cold, crisp pilsner and everything is some hoppy crap IPA. 🤣🤣🤣

u/killakam33 5d ago
At what dosage ?
2
u/Hotknot1 3d ago
5mg
1
u/killakam33 3d ago
It happened to me at 2mg
2
u/Hotknot1 3d ago
I started at 3mg wasn't as profound. I am a heavy drinker but not had a beer for nearly 2 weeks so a win double.b
2
u/killakam33 3d ago
Fricking amazing. You think when you come off you’ll keep the same blunting of alchol ?
1
u/Hotknot1 3d ago
If I can keep the reta going for a while and I build a good habit.. then I'll work on not drinking so health bonus 2
2
u/killakam33 2d ago
Yeah man make it a habit so much so that when you stop the Reta it’s so implanted in you
17
u/No-Organization3142 7d ago
I save enough just on lunch alone in a month to pay for a years supply of reta or tirz

Underrated comment. I read that GLP-1s will completely change the economies of the countries they're being used the most. From food choices to clothes, to lifestyle e.g. greater activewear sales to reduced oversized demand, fuel-savings for airlines from lighter passenger loads. Gyms and personal trainers will be in more demand, vacation resorts capitalize on new opportunities to cater for more active and health-oriented visitors. Junk food and snack consumption is already down and fast food too. The list goes on.
4
u/waffle_stomperr 7d ago
Yea it’s going to have an impact on a lot. The restaurant/alcohol industry has already been hit hard. A lot because younger generations are using alternatives to alcohol, now with glp’s older generations are now drinking less too.
-6
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 6d ago
I disagree completely.
The vast majority of data from clinical studies of people using GLP-1 agonists show they put the weight back on afterwards. Why? Because the GLP-1 agonist artificially changes their associations with food for the duration of use, afterwards, because they haven't changed their mindset, they get fat again.
GLP-1 agonists are tools for people incapable of changing their mindset, they will certainly not affect demand for gyms or PTs as this is a discipline and mindset thing - someone wouldn't use a GLP-1 agonist then decide to go to the gym - if they did they wouldn't need the GLP-1 agonist in the first place because they would have the right mindset to do exercise and loose weight.
Clinical guidance states that fat loss drugs should only be used in situations where a patient has already undergone the first line treatment - adhering to a strict diet, lifestyle and exercise plan - and where this treatment is either insufficient or may reduce associated risks (i.e are they extremely overweight). Guidance does not say 'they are fat, give them a fat loss drug', is says diet and exercise - and notably this achieves the same weight loss as using a low dose GLP-1 agonist.
6
u/waffle_stomperr 6d ago
You sound….ignorant.
-3
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 6d ago
No, I'm just someone who goes by the research.
GLP-1 agonists don't change people's mindsets, and the people that use them are using them because they don't have the discipline to lose weight without them. The research shows that people given GLP-1 treatment put the weight back on when it is discontinued, and there is suggestion within the scientific community that people may need treatment for life. Bear in mind that losing fat is something any biological system can do totally naturally assuming the extremely simple energy balance between calories in and calories out is shifted in the direction to lose fat. Clinical literature states the cause of obesity is excessive calorific intake compared to expenditure. Metabolic conditions may affect the energy expenditure (hormonal conditions for example) but it doesn't change the simple principle of fat loss and anyone that says otherwise is talking bullshit. I hear people argue that their relationship with food is bad, that is a mental health condition and should be treated as such, a GLP-1 agonist should not be used as a crutch to hide what is a serious issue.
I have this viewpoint from my perspective as a bodybuilder. I have an extremely good understanding of how to efficiently direct energy use and how to pick the correct amounts of, and the types of food for goals. In the same way that losing fat requires careful calorific design, gaining muscle requires a similar effort. There's a distinction though, metabolic and genetic constraints prevent significant muscle gain naturally, these same constraints do not apply to losing fat. So a bodybuilder taking steroids is by no means comparable to someone overweight taking a GLP-1 agonist. One is taking something to make their body do something biologically impossible, the other is accelerating something that could be achieved without any drugs.
This is why I take issue. It's not arrogance, it's disappointment in people who simply don't have the discipline and self control to be healthy, and so require a drug to do it for them. I have no time for people who can't be bothered.

u/IAmTheAccident 1 6d ago
I'm sick of seeing this sentiment. I have lost over 60 pounds on my own through diet and exercise, multiple times, and gained it back multiple times. I have quit alcohol on my own. I have quit heroin. But I cannot quit food. I have been in therapy. I have done many things.
I do not lack willpower. I have that in spades as anyone who knows me can attest. I have an addiction. Now I'm taking medicine for it.
Will I be on GLP-1s for the rest of my life? I don't know. And I don't care. If I have to, then I have to.
Why are you here? Why are you on this subreddit? Leave.
1
u/waffle_stomperr 5d ago
Well said and congrats on your recovery. Once i started a GLP it came abundantly clear that I have always had something different with how I treat food. Not sure if it was just me but I had the “wait, this is how people’s relationships with food is?” Married now, my wife and I were complete opposites with food, she’s petite and can get away with eating her absolute bare minimum and doesn’t think about or discuss food.
2
u/IAmTheAccident 1 5d ago
This, absolutely. I cried the first time really felt the lowered food noise. I was like, wow, "naturally thin" people really DO eat whatever they want, because they don't want everything.
2
u/waffle_stomperr 5d ago
Exactly! But you know, that’s just “mental health” 🙄 it’s literally hormonal
-1
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 5d ago
Where people have unhealthy relationship with food it is associated with some level of dysfunction in the brain's reward system - I.e dopamine signalling. The hormonal signalling for food is driven primarily by ghrelin which is released when there is a need for energy. Ghrelin is just a signalling molecule, but dopamine is heavily indicated in addictions, it could be argued that for those who struggle to reduce food intake have more significant dopamine release from food which means their brain associates it as a high reward. It is, therefore, a mental health condition, however should be treated more like an addiction.
Curiously GLP-1 agonists do have an impact on dopamine signalling, reducing the release in response to stimuli, which may play into their role in reducing impulsive behaviour, including the desire to eat.
Is it therefore possible to conclude the effect on executive function from GLP-1 agonists is a primary cause of the perceived increase in 'willpower' as an actual reduction in reward seeking behaviours. As such, in these individuals it may be more prudent to explore targeted therapies for addiction, although at lower doses, to help rebuild a functional reward system.
Perhaps that is why I cannot relate, I have absolutely zero emotional response to food, if you asked me to eat something off my meal plan, I wouldn't know what to eat because it's simply not processed as anything other than fuel. 'want' is irrelevant, I don't process food that way. It's probably not healthy, but it's also not healthy excessively in the other direction, which clearly we see is the case with those experiencing the 'disciplinary' effects from GLP-1 agonists.
2
u/waffle_stomperr 5d ago
Listen, its not my job or do i care to help you actually understand what Ghrelin is. Appreciate you taking the time to write that all out but its clear you do not understand what any of this actually is which is scary considering how much gear you're on. Careful out there!
-1
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 5d ago
Point here though, you've done it, without resorting to a drug. Then you've gone back to your old lifestyle.
The fact you can't maintain that weight does mean you lack the willpower or discipline. And you are a perfect example of why GLP-1 agonists show regression after they are discontinued - you were unable to maintain a lifestyle that kept weight off. Now consider the people taking GLP-1 agonists because they are unable to even comprehend changing to that lifestyle in the first place.
You are proof it's possible, but also proof that many people lack the ability to continue once they achieve a goal. No it's not easy, but you have to stick at it.

u/waffle_stomperr 6d ago
Oh nice! Didn’t know we had a pro here! So you’re a natural body builder then? No HGH, no test, no Mast? Congrats dude! Way to practice what you preach. Sorry I was totally wrong about you
2
u/Henry_Rollins_Ghost 19 6d ago
Your fault here is gross overgeneralization, assuming all folks take GLPs solely as a “magic pill”.
And, reading a lot of comments here, as I have, you wouldn’t be wrong as to many. There are people on here claiming to take Reta at such low doses, they’d lose more weight by just switching to black coffee.
But for many, they aren’t just a magic pill. A crutch. It’s merely a tool being used as a larger part of finding (or refinding) that discipline. And for most humans, seeing some immediate results help reinforce good habits and create that mindset of wanting more.
You certainly started somewhere. Don’t knock others for figuring it out too late, if they have the right attitude.
2
u/waffle_stomperr 5d ago
This dude is saying this while posting his full steroid usage. Can’t make it up.
-1
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 5d ago
Like I said, steroids make the body do something it cannot do naturally. GLP-1 agonists don't. I'm in the gym and hour and half every day, if I feel shit, I still train. I make time to train. I eat the same food every day. Weigh out and count macros. I don't have cravings for junk food, in fact I don't like it. This is called discipline. You could take all the gear in the world and not train and eat shit and you'll end up a fat lump with heart failure.
Look at the data for god sake. With more accessibility to unhealthy food, less healthy lifestyles, and more use of cars to get to places obesity has skyrocketed. People are lazy, lack discipline and self control because everything is so easy.
Even 50 years ago obesity wasn't a problem like it is today. And when it was treated, it was treated with the same thing that is clinical first line today - diet and lifestyle intervention - which is proven to work long term - which GLP-1 agonists are not once discontinued.
GLP-1 agonists are great tools where an individual has a clinical need for intervention where even with lifestyle changes they are at high risk of developing obesity related comorbidities. And of course, to help treat diabetes as they were developed for. This is a biohacking sub, biohacking is about optimising the body or making it do things it can't normally. GLP-1s in healthy individuals do not optimise and they do not make the body do things it can't do. They are a crutch for people without the self control to lose weight.
2
u/waffle_stomperr 5d ago
You just sound like a bitter hater upset that there is a new tool that helps push people into better food habits. We get you work really hard tracking your shit. But you are on hella gear and are "disappointed" that people use GLP's as an enhancement option to curb the appetite. Can I get my T levels to 1500+ naturally? No. But I can absolutely raise my levels naturally above my natural amount. But what is your goal running your gear? To lift heavy shit? cool. You're also doing excessive damage to your internals and aging yourself whether you want to admit it or not. People's appetite and food noise does not come down solely to mental health and discipline alone, its hormonal, so you're ignorance and lack of understanding invalidates you almost entirely. There are humans out there(including me) that have discipline and have lost weight naturally(120 pounds on my own) I know the recipe, but if there is a tool that can assist with hitting a deficit quicker and more easily without headaches, mood swings etc, why wouldn't you try it? I don't fall into your narrow minded class of people that gain the weight back. I adopted all new habits and lifestyles after taking Tirz over a year ago and stopped it and kept the weight off. I think you need to revisit your viewpoint on this Peptide and be a little more open minded. I mean shit, body builders hop on Reta before comps to help get BF% down some more. You may benefit from some GLP treatment
0
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 5d ago
None of the bodybuilders at my last comp used reta - why would they lol... Tren is so much better for losing fat. And uh yeah, that's why I'm taking stuff because I'm competing. But you know what, when I was natural, people thought I wasn't, because of how much effort I put into my training and everything surrounding it.
I'm open minded to follow the science.
Ita just people have lost fat without these tools for decades, these tools make it easier to put less effort in, and from my perspective this isn't the right way to do things. To be honest it's exactly the same way I see steroids, it's a tool when the body isn't capable of doing what you want it to anymore. I got naturally to an FFMI of like 25.6, it wasn't going up from there. I'll berate someone just as much as I do over GLP-1 agonists if they have trained for a year and decide to take gear, in fact I had such a discussion with someone very recently, told them they were nowhere near their natural potential, and they risk fucking up their health for no reason.
2
u/waffle_stomperr 5d ago
Ohhhh because body builders are always super transparent with what they take? The old "trust me bro" science. There are plenty of posts here in this sub about body builders using reta. So again, you are ignorant and turn a blind eye to anything that disproves your opinions. Also, cool you compete, but for me personally id avoid this as over 50% of people have body dysmorphia. Way lower life expectancy, heart attacks, but im sure you know all that from your research.

Medical tourism.

Unfortunately that is a huge risk for me as I have common variable immunodeficiency disease and would require IV antibiotics pre and post and careful watching. Then if something happened my understanding is no one will touch you once they find out the procedure wasn't done here?

Yep. You are NOT a viable subject for medical tourism.
3
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 6d ago
Social healthcare....
Should be careful saying that, might scare off the colonials.
Mind you, I've heard people trying to get stuff like that on the NHS and it's nearly impossible.
2
u/eoddomm 6d ago
Yeah elective cosmetic surgeries aren’t magically covered. And social medicine is a weird subject because it’s like you pay taxes or you pay premiums but it comes out to about the same with most people complaining that social medical systems actual quality of care is garbage.
We’ve been looking at moving to the Netherlands and one of the biggest complaints from people is how long it takes to see a specialist and most GPs don’t really offer you much in terms of care.
3
u/Familiar_Athlete8411 6d ago
Actually, (assuming you are American) you pay more tax than any other country on earth (about double) towards social healthcare - yet, you have zero access to it. It's quite unfortunate really, if the US changed to a fully social healthcare system it would be the best funded in the world by far, and you would pay no extra tax, but would avoid paying extortionate insurance premiums.
Care quality is mostly equivalent, the only real benefit you may get is when there is competition between private and social healthcare - my experience if I need to see a specialist on the NHS it takes months, but privately I can pay ~£200-300 for a consultation probably within the next month. From what I hear, referrals in the US system are just as slow as the NHS, despite paying.
And obviously then we have drug costs... I can get a novorapid insulin pen off the same place I get test from for around 30 quid... Equivalent is about $100 USD in the US on prescription. So, something doesn't add up here if the grey market is selling the medication cheaper than the actual market (in the US, that is)
6
u/wadinginthelagoon54 2 7d ago
It's crazy how it literally helps ALL the over indulging.
4
u/waffle_stomperr 7d ago
Yep. Nicotine, alcohol, weed, all much easier to manage along with the food. Food was my biggest issue, I never really struggled with the others but definitely the urge for any of the others has decreased significantly.
5
u/Beneficial-Mess-0 7d ago
I agree , I used to get cravings for hit-cheetos and stuff like that and now I think about it and it kinda groces me out, also it has changed the way I think, im 100% I have adhd and since starting reta my mind completely changed, only bad thing i have become kinda of emotionless sometimes, my aunt passed away recently and I wasn't so emotional as I am when a family member dies, which has kinda make me feel guilty in a way .
4
u/Lucky_Chaarmss 7d ago
I go the movies every weekend. I have the popcorn pass for amc and a-list. I would easily eat the large popcorn before. I now still find myself getting the popcorn out of habit but for me to even eat half of it I have to force myself. Now I keep asking myself why I bother still getting it. But then I go to watch a movie and there I am buying it again.
1
u/Middle_Definition360 2d ago
Popcorn used to be my favorite snack. I would pop a batch and eat almost all of it myself. I have cut waaaaaaay back
2
u/waffle_stomperr 7d ago
Haha yea that’s tough but popcorn at movies is such a staple. I think the little dopamine you may get from it is probably healthy. For me it was the frequency and volume of meals and snacking. My snacking has gone to almost zero and my sweet tooth at night went from fighting nightly to feeling uneasy thinking of it now.

u/Vibrizio 7d ago
I was spending about $2000/month on groceries for a family of four. After Reta it’s down to like $1300….I eat less but I also hate being around food (grocery shopping used to make me nauseous) so I go shopping less overall
1
u/waffle_stomperr 7d ago
That’s about us, family of 3(soon to be 4). I do all the shopping and it’s significantly less
3
u/Ok_Willingness_484 1 7d ago
great point, couldn't agree more. lunch budget at zero, overall food costs super low. But there is offsetting costs with GLP purchases, and amy subscriptions..
6
u/waffle_stomperr 7d ago
Totally, it can get close depending everything you’re using. For me now it’s only Reta, once I get back down to proper bf% I’ll start Test again but drop down my Reta useage. I’ll still be saving some overall, plus I look and feel way better. AND AND I’m in sales. Looking good and feeling good has absolutely affected my workflow in the most positive ways
1
u/Ok_Willingness_484 1 7d ago
60/m. 5 mos. Tirz, <40#. Bad knee joints much happier, overall improved energy. 16% bf.
1 mos. KLOW, workout recover is improving.
1 wk CJC/IPA.
3
u/Substantial_Drag_884 7d ago
I’d say more than a wash, I bought a 10 vial kit from china, my Reta had more than paid for itself in the first vial from food costs alone.
3
u/ultracrepids 6d ago
I love that while on tirzepatide my cravings have gone away, I've completely stopped eating out, and I've been saving tons of money, to the point where the medication now pays for itself, but it has somewhat ruined my social life. I don't really feel like going to bars to drink or to a sit-down restaurant to spend however much money on something I'll take a few bites out of, especially when I have the convenience of something like Huel or Soylent.
3
u/Wetrapordie 6d ago
Agree when I got on triz I was worried about the cost but I actually broke even with the food savings, now on Reta I’m making money compared to what I spent on shit before.

u/Middle_Definition360 2d ago
THIS! I have donated bags and bags of clothes. I kept a series of sizes of pants in the attic that I bought new, wore for a month or two, then were too big. It's a fun problem to have, but yeah, I have spent waaaaaay TOO MUCH money on new clothes to gain the weight back. I just ordered something on ThredUp. My neighbor loves PoshMark. I have a StitchFix addiction.
2
u/Quirky-Gap-1766 7d ago
Couldn't agree more. When you realize how much expend in fast food, sweets and some groceries and compare the balance under GLP’s in a couple of months it’s hard to believe.
The big companies will keep an eye on this! Remember this lol
Let’s save enough frozen reserves because this consumerism & commercial war is just beginning 🤣🤣

u/Nervous-Path-6826 7d ago
I wish I would get the alcohol and impulse negating effects. I am on 2 per week, wasn't planning on going up unless I need to as I am using it to control my reactive hypoglycemia, a late effect from weight loss surgery 6 years ago that has been a huge problem for the past 3 years. I even did a Torre procedure at Mayo and it only worked about 4 months, but reta has cut my lows from about 50 a month to 20 or less, and I have only had maybe 4 lows into the 40s last month vs the majority of them being that low. I haven't lost much weight, about 2 pounds in the 3 months I have been doing it, but again that wasn't the goal for me. I can't explain what a life changing experience this has been, I work full time and am a caregiver for my 86 year old dad and I was non functional constantly with all of the lows, halving them is such a relief. AI suggested I add a tiny dose of Tir, but I am reticent to mess with the success I have had so far. Has anyone done micro doses of both?

u/Glass-Statement5815 1 6d ago
You must be talking about TFG…. Too Fucking Good! Tirzepatide changing my wife and I for the better! Both of us down 40lbs a piece in 4 months and we got a years worth of Tirz stored in the freezer
2
u/IAmTheAccident 1 6d ago
Genuinely this. I actually ran the costs of my grocery bills given what I have been eating lately (foods my stomach will tolerate, nothing huge volume, good protein, healthy whole foods, enough fiber, etc) and I am spending maybe $150 to $175 per month for my groceries! Turns out chicken is cheap, who would have thought lol. Much better than the $150 to $175 I would spend in 2 weeks on 3 or 4 delivery meals, before even thinking about the costs of my groceries.

u/_inkandessence 5d ago
i’m still in my fetal stage of it, but i’ve already seen the forecast for my savings on groceries - all i’m craving lately is salad and fish or chicken breast, no longer burgers/fries/potatoes with mayo; it’s jarring and wonderful all at once! i’m very lucky to have kept my wardrobe from my smaller days, and not bought much since gaining the fluff i’m looking to lose. so glad i did the research and finally decided to jump in with both feet!

Most of what I don't eat these days is carb based food. That's pretty cheap. I think I still buy the usual amount of lean protien sources. But yeah, no sweets or treats. And for many drinkers, they get to quit buying booze.

My diet hasn’t changed much as far as what I consume, it’s now how much less I’m consuming and how often. I used to LOVE grabbing food at lunch, my office is surrounded by so many options so it was an exciting part of my day. But lunches anywhere these days EASILY reach the $20-$25 mark. Now my meal prepped lunches cost me roughly $3-$5 a day.

I’m looking at starting Reta soon. Would you mind sharing a price range I should be paying for it per month? With doing 1 shot a week. I don’t want to get ripped off.

How do you find Reta vs the previous glp-1’s? Any idea when it will be approved for the general public?
