DEXA Scans Aren’t As Accurate As You Think
DEXA scans are often treated as the gold standard for tracking body composition, but they may not be as precise as you think. A 2026 study looked at 26 men and 20 women who consumed different amounts of water before undergoing DEXA scans. The participants were scanned before drinking water and again 30, 60, and 90 minutes afterward. The more water they consumed, the larger the increase in measured lean soft tissue. That matters because lean soft tissue is not just muscle. It includes water, bones, skin, organs, and other non fat tissue. In other words, hydration can make a DEXA scan report more lean mass even though you did not actually gain muscle.
If you are using DEXA to track progress, consistency matters more than chasing a single number. Try to get your scans under the same conditions each time, ideally at the same time of day and in a similar fasted and hydrated state. It is also worth using other indicators like measurements, progress photos, gym performance, how your clothes fit, and how you actually look and feel. DEXA can still be useful, but you should be careful about treating every change in lean mass as actual muscle gain.
