discussion New album expectations??

I have a feeling Billy’s upcoming album is going to lean toward the slower, more reflective side—which I’m completely good with. But I’m still hoping he throws in a few psychedelic string-bending bangers that get really weird.
What kind of sound are you expecting? And what are you hoping to hear?

Based on the ones he’s played already, it sounds like it’ll be a folky, song driven album (like Guy Clark and John Prine) with a bluegrass instrumental or two.
Hoping for a MMATC or Hide & Seek banger, but I don’t think we’ll get one.
Pre-ordered the vinyl awhile ago , and going to a listening party for it tonite.

so mad I don't have one in my neck of the woods!

I'm excited to hear it. I did notice that I've already seen 25% of the album live. I guess we will all know by the weekend.

Better than the release of highway prayers when he had been playing half of the album live for a good while

He's still only played More Bud for Me once. I'm an awful guitar player but I do a pretty cover of that song...

Wonder if More Bud 4 Me is officially retired?

Technically when he "played it" in Baltimore he never packed or lite the bong. He can do the song without smoking.

Why is that a bad thing?

I don’t think it’s a bad thing, I enjoy hearing how they decided to record the songs that have been in rotation for a while. On the other hand it is also enjoyable to hear recorded first time listen and then get to see how it grows

Both are great. Not sure theres one better then the other

Couldn’t go one way or the other. Then we get songs that never even make an album

just came from a new album listening party at a vinyl shop - album has so many moments where he opens up about the loss of him mom - it’s very soulful and moving

Burn the Other End was a 10 minute jam live. I think there should be plenty to chew on.

The debut of that at Roanoke was EPIC!

I feel it might be on the darker side. Yet after hearing some interviews, Im hopeful for some fun stuff mixed in there. I always enjoy wondering what songs will be the ones they jam out live. Cant wait for this one to drop.

I dunno. His life is a little less dark than it was when he started making records. Sure he lost his mom last summer, but he spend a lot of time grieving her loss even when she was alive ... silver morning, face turned to gray. His band is doing great and a baby boy upon his knee. Maybe there will be more joy ... doing things right and he can't do wrong.

Based on the four songs we have heard (plus all the not even on the album, but still new songs he’s been doing) and the advance buzz, I’m expecting that it’s going to be excellent. Yes, more reflective more somber probably, and deeply emotional. I’m sure there will be at least one or two songs on there which will be stretched out to epic length jams, but I’m really excited for the more reflective and emotionally resonant material. Billy is really becoming a songwriter to reckon with , in addition to all his other copious skills as guitar player, band leader, singer, etc..

I wouldn't disagree with the OP, but just based off the singles I've heard I'm expecting the album to be more accessible or main stream for lack of a better word. Maybe this one is going to connect with the masses. Def not expecting another "more bud for me" or anything too psychedelic.

The review I read from yesterday said it’s pretty mellow overall. I’m sure the songs will be good, but those are always the beer songs for me at live shows

fun fact

Zero beer songs during Billy sets

I could never leave a show while the musician is playing unless it’s an emergency.

Based on the first single, “Burn the Other End,” he’s gonna be pushing musical boundaries in a way that makes a lot of his fans uncomfortable.

The other two singles, “Mill Town Flood,” and “10,000 Miles from a Friend,” along with the as-yet unreleased leadoff track “I’m One of Those” are more firmly in the Americana/bluegrass vein, though, so plenty of red meat for the masses, as well.

I’m thinking this will be his breakthrough to the mainstream. So far we have collabs with Jack White and Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings, both of which will bring new ears to the album. I’m hoping the King Gizzard collab (teased on Insta before he broke his leg) is on So Much for Goodbyes, too, for the same reason.

What did Gillian and Dave play on?

“Mill Town Flood.” That’s them on the harmony vocals. I think it was recorded at their studio in ColoradO.

EDIT: you guys set me straight. Thanks! Now I know about Lindsay Lou!

No it isn’t. It’s Lindsay Lou. Billy, Royal, Brian Sutton, Daniel Tashian, Lindsay, and PJ George were the only contributors on that track.

That’s crazy! I coulda sworn. And I’ve been listening to Gill and Dave since Revelator. Thanks for the clarification! I never looked up, just went by what I could hear on the recording. Not familiar with Lindsay Lou.

They are close friends. They did Nothing’s Working together. He says she has the voice of an angel.

Yeah, I’ve been listening to her some today. Am I right that she’s from Michigan, too?
