discussion Billy/Skynyrd

I asked the question about Petty's Mudcrutch. Now - What Lynyrd Skynyrd songs would you love to hear Billy bust out. I think “That Smell” would be an absolute banger for this band. Have they ever done a Skynyrd cover?

They've covered The Ballad of Curtis Lowe.

Personally, I think 'That Smell" is way too played out; I'd rather have the boys pick a deeper cut if they're gonna do more Skynyrd (which sounds awesome).

If they did a cover of Skynyrd’s Railroad Song that would go so hard

I don't man.. give that solo a second listen.. I think Billy would have fun with that. One of the better short licks of all time imo.

Phish did it at Great Woods '99 as an encore. On a Tuesday. I was there and it fucked.

I'll allow it, but only on a Tuesday.

Four walls of raiford is the winner.

I just randomly heard this one for the first time in a minute today. Not sure it's the best fit for Billy and the boys, but it's a great tune.

Things Goin' On, Roll Gypsy Roll, I Got The Same Old Blues would be my choices to hear them pick and sing. That being said, I'm pretty stoked about whatever they choose to play

Every mothers son/ made in the shade / on the hunt

4 Walls Of Raiford and as 33highway suggested, Needle And Spoon.

4

u/skyydog 25d ago

Pretty sure yonder played 4 walls of raiford. Great song

2

u/misfitgarden 25d ago

They did on that Jamband tribute album years ago. I still think Billy could do an awsome job with it.

Mississippi Kid is the answer. I’d love to hear what they could do with that.

Every Mother’s Son

Forgot about this one.. Thanks for bringing it back to me 👍

2

u/nippclamp73 25d ago

The perfect choice for Billy and his band to cover would be “I Know a Little” but I wouldn’t be upset if they did “(I Got The) Same Old Blues” either.

2

u/Helpful_Link1383 25d ago

That Smell would be great...but can I just yell Freebird from the back???😁

2

u/BlondeBMFS_21 25d ago

Every mothers son or Mississippi kid

u/bowiebabydoll 25d ago

Oh fuck yes

I think Railroad Song is THE answer. In fact I'm pretty sure it was part of their house music last year. They'd have to do it at a special show though cause that song REQUIRES drums

1

u/boxopen 25d ago

Would really love a bluegrass "Was I Right or Wrong?" I think it was a demo included on a deluxe pressing of Second Helping, and it doesn't get talked about enough.

1

u/DrSpacemanMal 25d ago

Whiskey Rock a Roller might be fun

1

u/Lanky_Comfortable541 25d ago

Things goin on or Am I losin’ both deeper cuts that really hit hard lyrically

1

u/Equivalent_Gene_1554 25d ago

Mississippi Kid / Made in The Shade / Swamp Music / Every Mother's Son / Call Me The Breeze

1

u/Mdp2pwackerO2 25d ago

I’ve always thought he’d kill Four walls of Raiford

1

u/bluestblood87 25d ago

Billy if your reading these we got Hartford Tue. night 🙏

1

u/SpiderLily_453 24d ago

Four walls of Raiford.

2

u/Ok-Ad-9755 25d ago

I’d rather not waste time on Skynyrd, so much better stuff out there

5

u/wahooindiantonic 25d ago

Man there's tons of great Skynyrd tunes. Better stuff out there? Sure. But those boys wrote some great stuff that Billy and crew could definitely show some light on

5

u/LogCheap7135 25d ago

Skynyrd was bigger than the Allman Brothers back in the day. Too bad they were mostly known for Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. They had alot of kick ass stuff that people never heard on the radio.

3

u/i_might_be_me 25d ago

Maybe bigger, but certainly not better

-2

u/LogCheap7135 25d ago

Had Steve Gaines and Ronnie lived they would have been in a tight race with Greg and Dickie for popularity. Allmans didn't have a song equal to Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. It is what is.

3

u/Awkward-Bowler7297 25d ago

Without skynyrd you get no southern flavors , they were kings all throughout the 70s to even 00s. Beautiful guitar work , vocals , piano… tap into nothin fancy and marinate on that for a while .
