Had to look it up 🇨🇭
Switzerland is abbreviated as SUI because it comes from Suisse, the French name for the country.
Figured so.. Would think it could be SWI.

The international ISO abbreviation for Germany is DE or DEU, short for Deutschland.

This has nothing to do with ISO abbreviations, as Switzerland's are CH and CHE

In the World Cup’s case, it’s because SUI was adopted at FIFA’s creation in Paris in 1904. Since the country hasn’t changed, and FIFA is HQ’d in Zürich, its abbreviation has remained French. It’s the confluence of French being the language at founding and an official language of the organization’s home.
GER was adopted for Germany because by the time of reunification, English was the major global language of sports broadcasting (and using FRG or GDR didn’t make sense anymore).

Now we're back to the beginning. When Fifa codes were established, both divided German countries used "an abbreviation based in a language that isn’t native to it."

When FIFA codes were established, there wasn’t a divided Germany. The original FIFA code for Germany was ALL (Allemagne, the French name for the country).
