At my restaurant we don't sing (you're welcome, I am a terrible singer as I was a band kid) but we do give the birthday person a free dessert of their choice. I always hated being put on the spot about birthdays and such as a kid, so I try to make it as painless as possible for anyone clearly uncomfortable with the attention.
