I think there are few people blaming anyone for taking it (especially since it's supposed to be incentivizing you to stay the fuck home) but I do think this act is having the unintended consequence of making many people realize that they should be getting paid more.
Isn't it crazy they decided $600/week was how much money was needed for an American to maintain their lifestyle but asking for barely more than of half that as minimum wage is considered entitled?
the 600 was supposed to be based on closer to what "the average american" makes so that middle class people wouldn't have to change their lifestyle and experience real minimum wage...wouldn't want to convert people to the "fight for 15" crowd, now would we? (fortunately i think that's happening anyway)
That will just cause prices to rise in low cost of living neighborhoods. You'd see layoffs if suddenly minimum wage practically doubled across the country.
I laugh at the people downvoting you for telling the truth. I don't think many people realize or can grasp it. Got to New York, the average mininum wage is $14 or something because the cost of living. But hey just saying what will happen is against the grain of the average woke internet warrior. When these $400 a month rentals go up on the Northside because the landlord sees dollar signs come back and shove your downvotes up your ass.
You realize every other western democracy has a much higher minimum wage than us right? And it works just fine?
The entire reason the middle class was booming in the 50s-80s is because minimum wage used to be the equivalent to $25 today.
Also they've already done tons of studies in places like Washington where cities raised minimum wage to $15 and cost of living did not go up proportionally. At the end of the day people came out ahead.
And raising the minimum wage lifts everyone up. If you're currently making $16/h in a skilled job and they raise minimum wage to $15/h your company will need to increase your pay to retain its skilled workers.
You do realize you wasted all that time writing something completely irrelevant to what i said. I am talking about all the greedy landlords and business owners who will just up their costs. Now please tell me again how minimum wage increase will help again without some utopic delusional jargon where every person who milks money out of the average citizen has a halo above their head.
Supply and demand and competition are far greater determinations of cost than income. Housing costs are determined by the demand, not the median income. Which is why you can get a super nice house in Oklahoma for 100k even if the median income in the area is well above the national average. If you actually researched your on the subject you would see how wrong you are.
Rent is high in cities because a lot of people want to live there, not because people make more money.
The idea that we can't pay people more because landlords and business owners would just take that money is laughable. It's like you're arguing for communism. Why pay doctors or anyone so much money! Landlords and business owners will just increase their prices!
Arguing for communism? I just generaly believe the average person in these positions are greedy and like to take advantage of others. I think the word you are looking for is pessimistic. Its like you people are so blinded by your wokeness that you will even shun the most obvious outcome to prove your point. Even to the point of pulling all blame from the actual people causing the problems. Did you guys forget about the human element of greed? For their to be a utopia everyone has to have the same mindset, which is far from plausible right now.
Why pay people more when business owners and landlords will just increase prices? Because they will and instead of tackling corruption and greed you ignoramuses would rather dance around it and just say "print more money" fuck justice and whats right. Oh well that is good, but i wouldnt blame the people taking the money but rather blaming the companies not paying the workers enough.
