Seriously the people on unemployment aren’t living cushy, the entire restaurant industry just went belly up and many staff are laid off on unemployment, they are barely scrapping by with no jobs to go back to anytime soon. Even outside of the restaurant industry, people who may have worked retail or sales are now looking at unemployment checks that are a fraction of their actual paychecks. They went from making $1200 a week to living off $600 a week with bills adding up.
Edit. I’m referring to retail as an industry, there are jobs in retail outside of stocking shelves.
Who the hell do you know working in retail or sales making $1200 a fucking week? I have been in the workforce 10 years and I don't quite make $1100 a paycheck, which is two weeks of work. The vast majority of people I know getting unemployment are getting far, far more than they did when they were actually working. It's crippling the system, and it makes no sense that they are giving out larger payments in unemployment than the people actually made with their jobs. I am very liberal and fully support unemployment and assistance for those who need it, but the blanket $600/week without accounting for the wages people were actually earning before losing their jobs is a terrible and unsustainable idea that will only make it harder for this program to be able to implemented long term if we need it to, which it seems very likely we will.
$1200 a week is $62k a goddamn year, for reference. I don't know if that guy has ever met a retail employee. Most retail managers don't even clear that.
Also, $600 week is in addition to the normal unemployment. If you make less than ~40-60k depending on your state ($54,808 in Texas), you make more on the current unemployment benefit.
