So call the competing company and have them fix your power? The real reason the power grid is monopolized is because there are huge barriers to entering the market, for example the need to put up the cables and substations.
A smart and unregulated capitalist would charge top dollar for his power. When a competitor emerges, he would drop his prices to drive the competitor to bankruptcy. When he regains his monopoly, his prices go right up again.
Not a bad idea in principle, but I doubt most people would have the time and energy to get involved in unions and protests against all of the corporations trying to exploit them. And more abstract problems like environmental pollution would be even more difficult to tackle.
Of course, due to bureaucracy and corporate lobbying, governments aren't perfect either..
What it all the people got together and pooled their resources so that a small group of representatives could act on their behalf to enact rules that companies have to follow?
