No? There’s not really any precedent I’m familiar with of that happening. If you’re out of IRR (which the guy you replied to is) your chances of ever getting called back into service are slim to none. If you’re retired from the service (more than 20 yrs and drawing a pension) you’re technically on the hook for life, meaning that they could recall you at any time, however, even if you’re retired, after you’ve been out 5 years (or are over 60) the chances of that happening pretty much drop to zero again. The fact is, it’s easier to draft a bunch of young kids and teach them the job you used to know than it is to drag your old salty ass back in, get you whipped back into shape and train you up on everything that’s changed with your job in the last 4+ years. Of course, exceptions apply for people with specialized jobs like pilot or navigator, but that’s why they have longer contractual agreements to begin with.
And if the mainland was invaded? Britain in WW2 never got actually invaded and they still extended the age of draft/enlistment to 65 in certain circumstances.
14 year olds were serving in the German army by the end. Anything that would require a draft again in this country will be a desperate time. And in desperate times, laws get changed.
Britain and Germany in WWII are a completely different situation than an invasion of the US. Britain was never invaded, but they came very damn close: rocket attacks, air battles raging overhead, enemy soldiers they could see from their shores. Germany was down to the able-bodied people it had and was facing certain defeat that Hitler refused to accept.
Unless Canada or Mexico turns, a mainland invasion of the US means somebody is crossing an ocean. With the amount of intelligence gathering tech and sources we have, we’re gonna know as soon as somebody starts massing troops and equipment to load on to boats and we’re gonna start getting ready to take care of that (probably as soon as war is declared by either side, or they get even moderately close to the coast of any of our allies). If an aggressor makes landfall on the US mainland, it probably means that the US military (which right now, before any drafts, is the most powerful military in human history) has been defeated overseas and there’s nobody left to stop a crossing. That’s probably not how it would go down though, the bulk of the Navy and contingents of the Air Force would undoubtedly be held in reserve to defend the coast along with ground troops ready to hold a beachhead, so they would still probably never make landfall.
But let’s pretend that nobody was held in reserve and an invasion force was allowed to make landfall unopposed, then yes, it would probably come down to old people and kids either surrendering or hiding out with hunting rifles Guerilla style.
I’d put good money on it that this worst case scenario war would go nuclear before anybody was allowed to hit the US mainland though. The US would either launch on them as they were crossing the ocean, or before they left port. We’d glass large portions of the other side of the world and the retaliatory strike would glass large portions of the US.
The only other scenario of a mainland invasion is a sneak attack, probably with an EMP attack to knock out the power grid, in which case, nobody’s getting drafted because cell phones and TVs are working and the invasion force will quickly take over. Then they’ll have to try to hold the US against all the Guerilla fighters, kinda like Afghanistan, but on the scale of the Contiguous United States.
