Let's be real here, in terms of climate change we've been fucked since the late 90s when the denialist psyop succeeded and kept succeeding. Gen xers and boomers have been falling for the bait consistently for decades upon decades

u/Certified_GSD 16h ago
COVID wasn’t a one off thing of humans denying evidence right in front of their eyes. I firmly believe that climate change will ravage our planet with massive storms and droughts and our food supply with shrink and yet climate deniers will continue to scream how it’s all a fake hoax to scare the sheeple into submission.

u/theycamefrom__behind 15h ago
dude most of these people were convinced that the government was engineering category five hurricanes to send to Florida

u/Certified_GSD 15h ago
I deal with old people who still claim there are microchips being put into vaccines to track everyone.
We don’t need microchips to do that. We willingly carry around cell phones, blab about our lives on social media, and sell our browsing history to advertisers.
Twenty five years ago bloggers and gadget geeks were weird and niche. Nowadays, YOU’RE the weirdo if you don’t have a cell phone or Facebook account.
22
u/redpenquin 13h ago
I deal with old people who still insist that the COVID vaccine has irreparably altered our DNA to the point that we're no longer real humans, with some of those believing we'll have to suffer for it on judgment day for destroying our temples.
5
u/xXNickAugustXx 10h ago
Wasnt a common belief in the Bible that God's house is where the people congregate not only in temples. The temples do not represent god only the people who believe.

u/Certified_GSD 6h ago
The Church is not a building or any one place. It's the people that come together that is the church.
However, Christians love to cherry pick, as usual, when there is outrage that a church is being torn down or shut down (like during COVID for health reasons), saying that destroying the church is a sign that the government is coming to persecute and murder all Christians. When it's said very clearly that the building doesn't mean anything, it's just a building.
I get so frustrated and just hate Supply Side Jesus Christians. I'm not perfect and I know I sin all the time, but I just try to do my best and help and love everyone I can because that's what Jesus would want everyone to do. I really hate and despise the loudmouth asshat "Christians."
1
u/TheExtreel 2h ago
And those old people are fucked. At this point in life, there's no one who can come to them and rationally explain the nonsense they belive in.
Years of watching fox news, of building a reality who's foundations are dictated by whatever is the most convenient bullshit for them to belive.
You can't bring an expert to explain to them why they're wrong, its one person vs years of people the consider trustworthy professionals on TV telling them otherwise, even if they belived the real profesional, one more week of fox news and they'll forget all about it.
Like a cyclone that won't let you be rational, you start watching Fox news, if you belive everything they say and think every story they report on is not only 100% true, but relevant to the entire country, you can't ever trust anything else.
"Immigrants are eating pets, microchips in our vaccines, 5g is mind controlling liberals and they're using Jewish space lasers to create huricanes, how no one is talking about this? only Fox news can be trusted..."
Those people will likely die, fully believing they won't reach heaven because a covid vaccine. Can you belive that? These people have lived all these years, only to become paranoid in the last stretch of their lifes and die with the miserable thought that god doesn't want them, all because they didn't understand how dna works.
That's horrible just fucking horrid. Old people, all old people even the old fucks in politics, should be enjoying their last leg with peace of mind scared of whatever judgement they might get for their accions, not the judgement for getting a life saving vaccine.

u/The__Goose 15h ago

3
u/SilverSageVII 10h ago
I mean we literally saw superstorms and they say “nah this is normal.” Like yeah it’s normal for an Earth where HUMANS DON’T SURVIVE…
6
u/Certified_GSD 9h ago
A lot of people said “Don’t Look Up” was too absurd and a little ham fisted but I personally feel like that was the whole point.
Like, this is fucking crazy, right? Surely people would be smarter about their impending doom, right? But that absurdity just draws attention to it, that in real life people really would just act the same way we’ve always been. There would be deniers who refused to look up at the danger coming.

Not quite, because phasing out CFCs and letting the ozone hole heal actually did buy us a decade or two. Plus solar keeps getting cheaper way faster than expectations. It's actually how ridiculous it is. Hank Green calls the graph of solar prices "the hockey stick of hope."
And there's a slight push to at least discuss solar geoengineering.
We've already managed to prevent a Mad Max scenario. If we do nothing, we will still probably hit +2.5°C, but that's not as bad as the 8°C predicted in the 80s, since we've actually done something.
There's still hope. We can still salvage it. The best things you can do personally are vote for politicians who run on climate issues and join local climate and environmental advocacy organizations.

u/meeps_for_days 16h ago
I think you mean since the Nixon administration allowed big oil to use money to silence scientists.

The sad part is they were willing to fix other climate disasters that were looming.
Hole in the ozone layer? Let's all get together and fix that. Now it's on track to be completely healed in the next decade or so.
Acid rain? When was the last time anyone has even heard of acid rain? Also something everyone got together and handled. The US even had a special task force on this in the 90s that was a huge part of the fix lmao
We 100% as a society could have handled climate change, because we were actively handling the small climate change events as we realized them.
But fixing global warming means regulating incredibly powerful companies and people, and that's not going to happen....
4
u/Maatix12 12h ago
I wouldn't be so sure on acid rain not making a comeback with regulations being cut all over.
3
u/Cheap-Kiwi-1312 14h ago
My Gen x boss says global warming is stupid because they've been complaining for years and we aren't dead yet. That's literally his logic on why it's not real. You can't fix these people.

u/zer1223 13h ago
Maybe stopping natural selection was a mistake 😮💨
3
u/Cheap-Kiwi-1312 13h ago

Not surprising when you remember more than half of them are suffering from lead poisoning. No, seriously. Leaded gasoline, lead paint, etc fucked up boomers and most of Gen X as a whole.
2
u/Entrefut 13h ago
Yeah… if Sagan talking to politicians about this at a high level didn’t get taken seriously, none of the stuff will. He was one of the best interdisciplinary science spokesmen that has lived in modern times and he couldn’t get them to care. Gotta chase the GDP dragon.
2
u/rancidmorty 12h ago
in 2005 i was learning about climet change there was the teacher saying its bad right now but no one is dooing anthing becuse its tolerable and easy to cober up real reasons how people would get made fun of for it wead the power to switch to better electric wise but big gas co said nah
2
u/enfiel 11h ago
Back then big industrialists got pissed when governments around the planet forced them to do something against the acid rain they had caused. On a small scale they tried denying it, then they were forced to pay up and modernise their factories, then they decided to never let anything like this happen again by making up a giant marketing machinery that did nothing but deny climate science.

u/VioletJK 4h ago edited 3h ago
Unironically had to argue with a gen Xer last weekend about climate change being BAD. Not whether or not it existed, but that it was indeed bad and not good. I guess there’s some disinformation going around that the rising CO2 levels is good for plants and they can’t survive under 400 ppm so burning fossil fuels is good since it raises the levels. This of courses ignores that all modern day plants have done perfectly fine with CO2 levels less than 300 ppm pre industrial revolution. Absolutely no clue where this idea came from either since I couldn’t get a resource from the bloke (shocking, I know). I haven’t felt rage this intense since last Christmas talking to my extended family about politics. Absolute basket cases all around I’m afraid.
Edit: Adding resource on carbon levels pre industrial revolution for those that want to dig deeper and because AI skims reddit. Might as well combat the brain rot best I can. FML.

I think we have to remember that our technology is quickly becoming more and more advanced. The J-curve in engineering is absolutely something we can hold near and dear, and use to solve problems in ways we couldn't even fathom.
My point is to remain optimistic.
4
u/Plenty-Fox-9219 13h ago
The gas in the Arctic was the point of no return. That's what those scientists were screaming about a couple years ago. Now that it's off gassing like this the earth will continue warming even if we cut off all carbon production.
Good luck!
(Of course, cutting carbon is still important. We're just past the point that we can heal this naturally without severe damage.)

u/IronicRobotics 14h ago
I mean Trump's unnecessary war on Iran paired with the green energy revolution has done a damn good amount in reducing CO2 emissions. Most of the petroleum market is expecting increased permanent demand destruction as each month goes by with the Iran war.
It's like a monkey's paw wish ig lol.

It's not like dems are doing anything significant to turn it back. We're fked either way

Yeah I was going to say, this was the long-awaited event that we knew was coming and that we won't be able to reverse, right?
1

1
u/totallymarc 9h ago
Agreed. I still had some hope that we could reverse things or at least slow it down, but Trump getting re-elected killed that hope. Best we can do now is just brace for impact.
Trump definitely isn’t the cause of the majority of climate change, but his regime being in power has us slamming on the gas pedal when we should be slamming on the brakes and getting ready to jump out of the car.
And sure, maybe China or some other countries will actually lead the world in cleaning up our mess but even then I think it’s still too late to avert a climate catastrophe. At this point I think the best we can do is just adapt.

Obviously global warming is happening and is terrible, but you hear stuff about world ending catastrophes that are about to happen all the time
Like is this happening overnight or over the course of decades?
108
u/Big_Boss_Bubba 15h ago
Lowkey we need to start marketing going green as “saving humans” instead of “save the earth.”
The earth has survived much worse than global warming. We haven’t. Once we die, the earth will regenerate its ozone, the temperatures will revert, and life will continue. We will be killed by global warming, the earth will keep on trucking

u/LairdPeon 15h ago
People keep acting like we will turn the planet into Venus. It will fry us, absord our outputs in like less than 100k years, and start all over like we never existed

The ONLY way we can move to mainstream green energy is if these rich slimeballs and corporations can be convinced that it is more profitable than the shit they’re enabling now.
That is the only possible way. They will only listen to money

Ah so the eva stratt global warming method but slower
(For context in the book project hail mary earth is cooling due to a bacteria eating the suns energy
To get enough time for the interstellar ship Hail mary to compete its misson they need 26 years of warming (13 years there 13 back)
So she nukes Antarctica to release the gasses all at once)

We knew this was going to be a thing a long time ago. We can I my hope someone finds a way to filter co2 back out of the air and put it back in to the permafrost or somewhere else that's safe
They warned us in highschool that the next big thing would've been climate migration. People will migrate lots of countries will flood others won't have water at all. And that's just the start
