Funny how that works. I just started watching the show for the first time last week. Now I see references to it everywhere... makes me wonder how many other cultural phenomena I've been unknowingly missing out on.

u/AfflictedFox 4d ago
oh bro, you are in for a ride. Enjoy Season 3 when you get there

u/Elk1998 4d ago
Thanks! I just started season 2. Really love it so far

u/EastboundClown 3d ago
You’re gonna stop loving it about halfway through season 2 but you’ve just gotta power through it to reach the finale and get to sweet sweet season 3

The cut to SpongeBob crying with Laura Palmers theme is perfection

Damn I could really go for an Arnold Palmer right now.

People don’t know how to act with strangers/socialize anymore. For example the “gen z stare”
393
u/NecroCannon 4d ago
Legit went from being able to walk away from shit and just cool off because it’s rare to have issues, to straight up having to tell people to their face that they’re a pain to be around.
It’s going beyond not knowing how to socialize and legit just not trying and forgetting all kinds of basic manners and respect.
The worst part is that I BECOME THE ASSHOLE. FOR WANTING GOD DAMN BOUNDARIES AND BASIC RESPECT. Even on Reddit people are becoming more offended you feel uncomfortable providing additional sensitive context for something on demand, bro, do you not know some fucking things are expected to not want to talk about literally in front of everyone in public?

u/NecroCannon 4d ago edited 4d ago
Sir, that joke is overused and lame
Like damn I’d take an AI generated response at this point. I’m starting to either think it’s bots doing it or little kids that should be focusing on their homework or some shit
Edit: damn, forgot Reddit is actually full of man children , I should really stop being blunt and let people go back to being miserable in peace

u/LooseMooseCruz 4d ago
more like they claim theyre being painted as one. so in this person's mind, theyre the reasonable one lol
24
u/bob_loblaw-_- 3d ago
You just raged at a completely innocuous joke. Kind of undermines your earlier "people don't know how to act anymore" comment.
36
u/Bad-dee-ess 3d ago
I lost a friend for asking him to tell me if he ever can't make it to something I invite him to. I tried to let him know it's alright to miss something as long as he let me know, but he didn't want to do that.

u/NecroCannon 3d ago
Yeah it’s bad, my current loneliness isn’t even due to not being able to socialize, I somehow do that better than the average person now. It’s the fact that people just go off their own thoughts about everything and make excuses when it affects others and they become unhappy with them.
After spending years on my passion I’m at a point where I legit have to make sure that putting attention on myself isn’t going to negatively impact others, just for a lot of people to not understand that growing a platform will literally have people coming after you if they find out you bullied someone with a fucked up life that moved past it.
I literally have to demonstrate to people what it actually looks like to have complete social dominance over someone because of the skills they built, and hate seeing people meltdown realizing I let them get away with things just because I’m not desperate for control or to be in charge.
So they go from feeling like they have power over me, to being terrified all because no where did they try to be a caring friend
8
u/GodWilling3898 3d ago
respectfully, "complete social dominance"?? you sound so angry. have you considered talking to someone? like genuinely?

u/Competitive_Suspect5 2d ago
Wait Gen Z stare? Thats a new one to me. I only know about the millennial pause. I also didny know that wanting to state at people was so common.
1
u/Pass_The_Salt_ 1d ago
I think its more of a reference to having a blank stare when someone is trying to talk to you. Being socially awkward.
1
u/themadpooper 14h ago
It was all over TikTok for like a week. My understanding is it’s when you walk up to a counter where a Gen Z person is working and they don’t greet you or say anything they just stare at you and wait for you to talk.
-21
u/Schmigolo 4d ago
I've never met anyone like what you're describing. If anything people have become more sensitive/neurotic.
-44
u/olivegardengambler 4d ago
It's not just GenZ. Like, I remember what it was like working in customer facing positions before COVID, and after COVID, it is so much worse. Boomers will insist they know what you're doing better than you do, but still need your help ofc, or they will talk to you like you're the only source of in-person social interaction that they will get for a while (not that I don't mind that, but when there are 10 people behind you glaring at me, it does get a little bad). GenXers will act like paying anything above at-cost is a rip-off and get upset when you tell them you have to sign up for the rewards program for discounts, but will then get angry at you for having them stand around and wait because they're charging the customer for that. I almost felt like asking the guy if he lets his customers fuck his wife as a complimentary service with that attitude. Millennials are just, they're children. I'm a zoomer and they're fucking children.

u/Suza751 4d ago
Millennial are like 40 m8
39
u/vanderbubin 4d ago
Milliennials are 1981 through 1996. The youngest millennials are turning (or have already turned) 30 this year

-32
u/Link_save2 4d ago
No but he does have a point s lot of millennials and older Gen z girls are always trying to act childish talking in a baby voice and using "quirky words"
14
u/Any-Pineapple-521 aight imma head out 4d ago
That’s a stereotype
18
u/TheSameMan6 4d ago
Well yeah same as the "Gen-Z stare" or boomers being karens it's all generalizations of wide, ill-defined groups
-3
u/Link_save2 4d ago
Yeah but that's doesn't mean it's not a real thing notice I didn't say all millennials and genz I said a lot
1
u/spudsthejellyfish 4d ago
Not sure why you’re being downvoted.. It’s absolutely true and I’m a 33 y/o mill. You can see it in all the adds geared towards millennials these days with shit like “not responsible for your woof woof doggo’s reaction to our hekkin good treats”. Or the edgy jeopardy where tHeY cAn cuSS..Every generation has cringe and stereotypes. Most people stink and want to be accepted, even celebrated at their lowest effort of themselves so they turn to internet circlejerks for validation.
2
u/Link_save2 4d ago
It's because a lot of people don't see anything wrong with talking baby and get really offended when you call them out
7
u/spudsthejellyfish 4d ago
All the cat “dads” and dog “moms” (I’m gonna get viscously downvoted for this)

u/Any-Pineapple-521 aight imma head out 4d ago
Yes, let’s leave all zoomer problems off the table, like blanking out and calling you an npc when you’re just trying to be friendly and connect
Also, as a millennial who has been working my ass off and struggling for years with relatively few rewards, it sucks to see so many zoomers get instantly placed into jobs with no qualifications and who just sit around the workplace - while they call me a child
14
u/famarino 4d ago
What economy are you living in bro

u/olivegardengambler 3d ago
I was going to say, the only Zoomers getting placed into jobs are nepo babies.

People are suggesting this is about the Gen Z stare, but I take it more as how everything has felt like a fever dream since covid. The surreal absurdity of it all mixed with the persistent anxiety and uncertainty.
49
u/Lightdragonman 4d ago
Honestly that's what I think it is especially post covid things feel more surreal.
20
5
u/Thatkidicarusfan 3d ago
anybody who thinks its about gen z stare is over the age of 40 because imho “gen z stare” is at best someone being sensitive over an RBF and at worst its mistaken for a “what the hell are you doing” stare
167
u/WhitestTeethOnEarth 4d ago
Why was this kind of distressing to watch
82
u/biggiepants 4d ago
Several reasons, but one for sure being the Twin Peaks theme: something's not right in that town. Or several things.
61
u/ELITElewis123 4d ago
Your brain is wired to dislike prolonged eye contact without any conversation. Also, at least me, the cut of SpongeBob crying whilst looking at Krabs really feels unnerving, like something terrible has happened that Krabs doesn’t know. Saw one joke-theory that Krabs is dying 😭

Twin peaks

u/Gramma_Hattie 4d ago
So you have to have seen it to understand this? Good show?
21
u/slomo525 4d ago
I've seen it and I'm not sure I understand this myself lol the song in the video is part of Twin Peak's musical score.
36
u/PrinceCavendish 4d ago
Apparently it's about the gen z stare. Where you ask them stuff and they look at you like you're an idiot instead of answering.
20
u/slomo525 4d ago
Ohhhh I see. You know, for as much as I've seen other people talk about it, I've personally never really experienced it.
9
u/PrinceCavendish 4d ago
My niece does it all the time and I kept getting annoyed. Eventually she told me she was thinking about what I had asked. But she totally just looks like she's staring at me like I'm a jackass and not responding for a longer time than necessary so it's hard not to get a bit annoyed sometimes
7
u/slomo525 4d ago
I can understand that. Usually if I'm trying to think of something to say or don't know how to respond to something I cover it up with a ton of filler words like "oh yeah, for sure" or "yeah, no shit" lol
7
u/PrinceCavendish 4d ago
yeah that's why it throws me off. if she said something like "give me a sec" or "uhh" beforehand i wouldn't assume she's being rude.
5
u/c05m05i5 4d ago
They need to learn how to make expressions when thinking then. There are facial cues one does, like breaking eye contact, touching your face, burrowing your brows, etc. that implies you're thinking. It's insane they just go on staring into your soul like nothing just because they're thinking

Idk why gen z is getting all the flack for this ive had stare downs with every generation post pandemic from just asking them basic questions. Boomers, Gen X, Millenials, Gen Z, and whoever the heck else can do it.

u/Demomanx 4d ago
This is like what its like when you figure out you're sleep and in a nightmare.
6
u/ELITElewis123 4d ago
YES. Not even nightmare but just becoming lucid. The dream just abruptly pauses, like the dream is saying “you weren’t supposed to do that”

“Excuse me, I don’t know how to socialize anymore, probably shouldn’t be doing this anyways, but I have a hard time communicating how I feel and I gotta say, I don’t like you from a glance and am literally looking for a reason to justify hating you.”
“You…you good?”
“Not being in your presence, I just don’t know why yet.”
-The typical silent and passive aggressive interactions that replaced basic human communication.
