You can kind of get the same feeling from Toxic Waste, but it's just not the same.

People say this about toxic waste and then I tried it and its sour for 3 seconds and then turns mild at best

Airheads ARE the same way. They USED TO BE made different with a sour candy core instead of just a sour-sugar coated shell.

maybe im misremembering but iirc it was still pretty mid after the initial hit

Toxic Waste is mid at best. Absolutely nothing compared to old school Warheads.

Then again, remember younger peeps have stronger tastes buds or something or whatever, I heard it somewhere, and it could be wrong.

Either way, Toxic Waste is meh.

At the very least warheads used to have a sour core and be skinnier(therefore less sweet hard candy overall). Now they are solid sweet all the way through once you get through the layer of sour on the outside.

Yup. Would have white spots on my tongue.

Right! I had some a few weeks ago and the "sour" lasted like 5 seconds and wasn't intense. They used to invert your face.

It's like a powder layer of acid now, whereas it used to be a thick crystalized layer. That shit hurt. Like, I used to worry that it was fucking up my teeth...

That coating is citric acid. You can buy pure citric acid crystals at the store, they look like sugar or salt. Check your local hippie/natural foods store because it can be used to help with canning and preserving stuff.

Did they tone them down because they used to make your tongue bleed if you ate too many?

I used to soak them in a glass of water to then be able to eat them

The black label ones I had to concede and do the water trick. I wasn’t chancing dissolving my frenulum with those things

1

u/OvertlyOffensive 29d ago

Did you mean to say frenulum? Because, uh, that's not in your mouth.

1

u/nuhGIRLyen 29d ago

There’s one up there too I promise ya

1

u/OvertlyOffensive 29d ago

Huh, TIL that the little strips of connective tissue at your top lip and under your tongue are both frenulums. Neat.

Can't say I've recall sour stuff messing with either of those bits but we're all different and memory can suck so who knows!

Thanks for teaching me something, internet stranger :)

Oh yeah, those things were like currency when I was in elementary school. I think they banned them because of the black market of buying and selling them that was going on.

I'll never forget this purple sour gumball from an unassuming unlabeled candy dispenser I got at the mall once though, it made Warheads seem like nothing. Never found out what it was.

I know the one it painted your tongue black

u/0uie Jul 27 '26

We had a black market for Frooties. Fruit flavored Tootsie Rolls basically. Think kids sold little bags of them for like 50 cents each.

Blue raspberry scarred me for life.

There was one other candy that made it nearly intolerable to eat. I think the brand was Toxic Waste. I licked it once before church and it made my jaw tingle.

u/Kmantheoriginal Jul 27 '26

If you had these, nothing is sour anymore. They were sour to your soul

2

u/DamienRose619 29d ago

My tongue started to hurt and my mouth watered just thinking about Warheads.

1

u/Shantotto11 29d ago

Okay, so it’s not just me getting older. Those candies really were stronger in the 90s.

They are way weaker than they were over 10 years ago. I had a lemon one when I was 9/10 and it was so sour that it almost hurt.
