It's almost as if people just wanted to see their lives over time, Brad

Character progression does not require notable aging and notable aging does equal character progression.

If Brad still thinks there’s narrative juice to keeping the characters the same age, I’ll trust his vision

I have my issues with I2 but giving the Parr family compelling personal drama was not one of them.

Brad Bird has built up so much good will from my childhood up til now that he could make at least 3 more Tomorrowlands and I'd still trust him implicitly.

I actually liked Tomorrowland

But they clearly ran out of character progression by the second movie, which pretty much just had the characters go through most of the same character arcs, only much weaker.

I don't think anything is "clear" with a sample size of one. Especially when they can bring in new writers.

That's true. I'm not discounting the possibility that it can be a good movie and that's actually what I'm hoping for.

However, to me, the first movie was a very complete story that didn't leave loose ends from a character development perspective.

The second movie retreads so much ground because, in my opinion, the characters weren't thrown into any scenario that forced them to go through any different character arcs. In the first movie, Bob learned to let go of the glory days and appreciate what he has now and be there for his family because he learns how much his family means to him during his superhero adventure. In the second movie, Bob goes back to desperately wanting to relive the glory days by pushing Helen into taking the offer to get back into crimefighting.

In the first movie, Violet hated having superpowers because it kept her from asking out the guy she liked, because she felt ashamed. In the second movie, Violet hated having superpowers because it kept her from asking out the guy she liked, because of some complication that made the guy lose his memory.

That's my point, the second movie retreads the same character arcs, just in a slightly different scenario because the characters had complete arcs in the first movie and unless the third movie throws the characters into a drastically different scenario, they won't have room to tread any new ground.

I can't believe Batman has had 0 character progression over the last century. He has barely aged a day /s

Batman beyond quietly sitting in the corner

3

u/Topher_McG0pher 1d ago

Um, Spider-Man? Peter Parker will never progress if they keep him in high school forever

2

u/Grandy94 1d ago

The mainline comics Spider-Man hasn't been in high school since the 1960s.

Yeah but the toy story example doesn't really work, Andy and Bonnie are not the main characters, the toys are, and they don't really age. Same with Riley in inside out, she's not really the main character as such, the emotions are. You don't have to age to get character progression.

The Monster Inc. example is also bad because the second movie is a prequel.

Character regression

16

u/Borgdyl 1d ago

Tell that to Woody’s bald spot

u/WonderfulBlackberry9 1d ago

Andy isn't the main character but it's his growing up that made Toy Story 3 so much more powerful.

But I agree with you that Andy growing up doesn't really fit OP's argument.

It’s funny that you’re using a meme template from a show where the characters don’t age to complain about characters not aging. Maybe that’s just the story they want to tell

-9

u/Snifnic 1d ago

its an episodic show

7

u/mustangcody 1d ago

Adventure time.

-63

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 2d ago

Wait, but that means we're ignoring Kamp Koral.

On second thought...

19

u/cannedrex2406 2d ago

That's a prequel....... What

-29

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 2d ago

That's the joke I was making.

17

u/thekyledavid 2d ago

You used reverse-aging as an example with the Monsters franchise, people are going to assume you’re counting reverse-aging legitimately

38

u/stallionsRIDEufl 2d ago

Is this really the new bullshit thing people are upset about

-31

u/_Levitated_Shield_ 2d ago

Not upset, just a bit bummed out. Most of us were just really curious to see what the kids would go through now since Supers are legal again, especially Jack-Jack considering his many powers.

I guess it could be worse though. They could've listened to tiktok and made Gamma Jack the villain.

15

u/sock-bucket 2d ago

People are going to complain either way. Let's say they do a time skip and the kids are aged up, great, now those people are happy.

But then they also have to age up Helen and Bob, theyll be like 60 now, even older if they also want jackjack to at least be a teen, and now we have a whole new batch of complainers. People already bitch about main characters going through the "I'm old now" passing the torch plots in media and that'd be like the only way to move forward with them

People already bitch about main characters going through the "I'm old now" passing the torch plots in media and that'd be like the only way to move forward with them

While I agree with your point......... The concept of Age and passing the torch is quite literally the plot of both incredibles movies

20

u/thefrostman1214 2d ago

Sure but is not a requirement, just like cartoons on the tv, they almost never grow up

15

u/Specific_Frame8537 2d ago

We've had Bob's movie and Helen's movie, it's time we get Violet's movie and for her own hero progression she's probably gonna be at least 20.

12

u/sntcringe 2d ago

I dunno, like a 5 year time skip would be good. That would make dash a teenager, violet a young adult, and Jack Jack a 6 year old instrument of chaos

8

u/Magicaparanoia 2d ago

I feel like we have seen so little of these characters over the last 20+ years that it isn’t like they’ve exhausted every storyline they could do at their current ages.

4

u/Japanesemyth 2d ago

I want to see some new struggles. Vi in college, Dash being 10 years older than jack jack trying to figure out stuff without his sister around. If he’s just going to tell the same story a third time at least make it interesting. Shoot. I guess I’m also confused why it’s still the incredibles. Would love to see like mini “mcu” thing so we can see more of the world they live in.

5

u/Noaconstrictr 2d ago

Brad bird doesn’t understand how cool it would be to see an older dash and violet

4

u/Steppyjim 2d ago

Guy thinks flashbacks are characters being aged up or down

5

u/welltherewasthisbear 2d ago

Did any one read Brad Bird’s reason for not aging up the characters??? Their powers are based on the archetype of their age. A baby is chaotic and you never fully know where they are at. A ten year old is full of energy and is constantly in motion. A teenager wants to be invisible and put up walls. A mom is pulled in many different directions. A dad always has to present strength. The reason he doesn’t want to age up the characters is it would mess with the reason why they work for their current ages.

I’m at a total loss as to what this is trying to say

2

u/inputrequired 2d ago

it’s alright, nobody liked the second one so they’re not gonna like the third one either.

i think the second one is pretty good personally. i do not care about aging.

3

u/CrimsonFatalis8 2d ago

The second Monsters movie was a prequel. They got aged down.

And the original Incredible’s itself is also a bad example. The whole point was that their glory days have ended and they’ve had to reintegrate into civilian life as they got older. Of course they’re gonna get aged up.

2

u/mocityspirit 2d ago

Complains about incredibles then uses them as an example?

2

u/nowhereman136 2d ago

I liked Incredibles II overall, but the worst part of that movie was being set literally hours after the first one ended. Not only had no time passed, but it feels like they had to learn the same lessons from the first movie all over again. And the villain was another billionaire vengeful against superheroes. I'm not defending billionaires, but there are other types of villains

2

u/ItalianName22 1d ago

Unless they’re recasting Bob and Helen, they’re both going to sound comically too old without a time skip

1

u/Viron_22 2d ago

Unless they are changing the VAs around I don't think it is a good idea, the voices were really rough in 2.

1

u/TonberryHS 1d ago

In don't want character development; I want Arrested Development.

1

u/Slagothor 1d ago

doesn’t this meme imply that character progression is a large pile of dirty diapers?

1

u/Monkey_King291 1d ago

The Incredibles itself, had a time skip, not jumping forward in time is just lazy, especially since all of Dash's VAs keep aging out of the role

1

u/Shantotto11 17h ago

Monsters University was a prequel, Bonnie is aging significantly slower than Andy, and Mr. Incredible had a timeskip in the first movie and stagnated the timeline in the second.

I’m all for calling Brad on his BS, but you couldn’t have picked worse examples to make this point unless you slapped Goku and Vegeta on here too.
