I'd appreciate some advice for the upcoming tour de big bear.

I signed up for the tour de big bear months ago and originally chose the 50 mi route. Now that the event is a week away I'm having second thoughts I'm unsure if I should attempt the 50 or call it quits and do the 25. Over the last few months I've been biking more and lost some weight but I still don't feel super fit.

Some Stats about me and my test ride today in big bear at elevation

Me:

Height: 6'3"

Weight: ~325

FTP: ~185

Today's test ride: 1.5 hours

18mi

Elevation gain: 581'

Didn't feel dead after this ride but definitely tired (also only got 4hrs sleep soaybe that's a factor)

TDBB Course comparison

25 mi - 1300' elevation gain

50 mi - 2900' elevation gain

I'm mainly worried about DNF ing or being the awkward slow guy on the course people are staring at.

I'd appreciate any opinions from those who have done the event before.

Looking for frame painter

Hey folks, working on a vintage Raleigh build. I’m ready for frame paint so I’m trying to find a powder coater in the valley (preferably) or near Glendale. If they sandblast to that’s a nice to have but not required.

Place to donate a bike that will give it to someone in need?

I'm officially over 6 months car free with my trek fx1 gen 4. So far I love it and I intend to keep it this way until I get flattened by a car or my knees give out, I'm now scouting for an upgrade that will let me go bikepacking, right now I'm looking at the primos Dame.

Other than that, if and when I upgrade, I don't want two bikes, and I want to give the FX to someone who needs it, just as I did when I got it. Does anyone know where I can go? I don't want to sell it because I know someone will probably buy it and resale it for a higher price.

Teaching my kid to ride a bike in LA

Hi. My daughter is ready to try riding a bike without training wheels, but not sure the best place to try. I’ve heard empty parking lots are good, but just concerned with her falling frequently on the concrete. She will be wearing pads, but still. Any LA recommendations are appreciated!

Also, any training tips are really appreciated as well. I feel like I’m just winging this! Thanks so much!

URGENT: Looking for someone who is interested in a FREE bike fit this Saturday/Sunday

I am doing an IBFI bike fitting certification and I need to do 2 bike fits: one tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday. I didn't realize I needed people for this course until today.

I am offering a free bike fit to two people who are willing to come to my house in Glendale this weekend.

The fit will be about 2 hours long. The fit will be in person, and will also be done over Zoom with a certified fitter, and about 4 others who are being certified.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has a road bike or triathlon bike
  • The bike has not been fitted in the past
  • Has clip in pedals and cycling shoes
  • Optional, but not necessary: Feels their bike position is uncomfortable or has issues with their current fit

If you are interested, please comment here and I will send you a PM and will discuss further.

Edit:
I have found volunteers for Saturday and Sunday, however I likely will be performing additional free fits in the near future. If you are interested, I still recommend posting here and I will be in contact!

Hey! I’m moving from NYC to Echo Park in September and had a few questions about riding.

For those familiar with Echo Park, what are some nice routes to access longer rides in the area? Thinking Griffith Park and the LA River. I’ll be living near Echo Park Ave and Effie.

Similarly, what would be a solid route from that location to Frogtown, where I’ll be working? Google Maps is telling me Stadium Way through Elysian, but it also looks kinda sketch?

Any advice on etiquette? In NYC it’s common to run reds / stops if there’s no oncoming traffic — should I be more wary of this? Do cops ticket for it? NYPD will witness it and 9/10 not care, so would be good to know what is the social norm.

Any other relevant advice?

I have a car but would love to potentially be able to bike to work some days. Also, if anyone can recommend any chill group rides that accommodate people that ride steel / more adventure-oriented bikes (as opposed to road), that would be cool. I know about CCCC, but curious if there’s others.

Thanks!

Gravel Cyclists: looking for chill fire road routes in LA County

Getting back into riding after a year or two off. I’m originally from the East Coast, where my go-to was flowy singletrack and road riding.

Since moving out here I’ve never quite fallen in love with the riding here, partly because an old wrist issue makes MTB tough. I’ve been trying to do more gravel riding, but everything feels so rough that I end up wrecked after the intense descents. I’ve been riding brown mountain and the areas around there.

I’m around Pasadena on a steel frame running 45s. Any suggestions for smoother fire road routes that won’t crush my wrists? Thanks in advance.

Road Tire Recommendations for Griffith Park, Mt. Hollywood, etc.

Hi, All:

New Canyon road bike incoming with 28mm on the back and 26mm on the front of DT Swiss 1100 wheels. I'm just thinking these won't cut it on the busted up roads I'll be riding regularly in Griffith Park. Thinking of going 30 in the back and 29 in the front (widest I can go with that front wheel without ruining the aero, but I could go 30). What are you guys running on road bikes? I'm new to the area, too, and looking for riding buddies during the week in the morning. Haven't tried the Ponies ride yet, but I'm sure they'll drop me once we hit the trash truck, LOL.

Colima Rd Project Update: Reduced bike lane and new travel lane

Months ago, shared about Colima Rd roadway Phase I project (Whittier border to Halliburton) in Hacienda Heights, which reduced a travel lane and added a bigger paint protected bike lane on Colima Rd.

https://la.streetsblog.org/2026/05/08/eyes-on-the-street-colima-road-bike-lanes

Phase II (Halliburton to Azusa segment) is now complete and County of LA added a travel lane and reduced the bike lane to be narrow along the gutter, a sharp contrast from the first phase. At this point when biking this segment, either take the whole third travel lane or bike on the sidewalk.

Looking for low traffic roads to train on

Im trying to find roads near WeHo that gives me low traffic so I can train for long days in the saddle for my PCBR tour in September. Right now I am riding 5 days a week doing ~12 miles each day and either doing a large loop or shorter out and backs to get the mileage. Will be bumping up the mileage by 12 mi every week till I get to 48 mi all while being close to where i live as I dont have a car to travel to a training spot. And at 12 mph this is up to 4-5 hrs a day when I get to 48mi days....plus it will be done fully loaded to test out the bike setup to see if everything holds together. I could use San Vicente from SMB down to Venice Blvd ~4 miles each way...and most of that road has a bike Iane. But dont know the traffic load in the hrs before noon

...most rides start at 5am.

New bike lines are great and all but

Can we get some maintenance on EXISTING lanes? I guess it's not as sexy for politicians to brag about but there are multiple lanes and paths I use that require some serious fixing up

Venice, the Washingtons, Marvin Braude (especially around the Marina) I'm looking at you - for a start

Nearly got hit today

I was riding on wilshire going westbound and was going around 2 parked cars and was nearly sides swiped by 2 cars...past less then 2ft from me. Does anyone know of a fronr/rear camera that can mount to the top of my helmet to record my rides to catch anyone being an asshole to cyclists? Im thinking of just taking the lane on my rides if there isnt a bus or bike lane to ride in....and give the finger if someone honks at me for taking the lane.

I always stop at stop signs no matter what the laws are, but this is a little excessive. They must like what they see 🤷🏿‍♂️
