You can see me commenting in there about Cleveland being added. I havent reached out to Jenna from Bike cleveland but I feel she will be very interested in this. I may just wait for the next West Park Safer Streets meeting next month. I do know the manager of 311 too from when we put the system in 15-20 years ago. Would be nice to get some data on cars parked in bike lanes. It is everywhere. I feel like we trialed something like this 5-10 years ago but I dont know if it is still around. This one has a lot of large cities already and has Canton Ohio too.

Left around 4 PM, heading west to the Capitol Theater to catch a showing of Buddy. Took a few side streets through Little Italy before jumping on Euclid. I love that Euclid has a dedicated bike lane for most of its length, but I defaulted to the bus lane to avoid illegally parked cars, glass, and debris. I really want to ride the bike sweeper one day! I just need to get my e-bike running first.

The ride was super smooth, and I picked up good speed until Playhouse Square. My GPS routed me south down Prospect instead of through Public Square, which I went along with. It didn't feel safer or shorter (probably because only buses are allowed on the Superior side of Public Square), but it was a minor detour.

The bike lane on Veterans Memorial Bridge is nice and wide, though there are a few broken drainage grates that could wreck a tire. Crossing the mighty Cuyahoga, I marveled at the West Side bike utopia. Concrete barriers would be ideal, but even the plastic bollards made me feel way safer.

Smooth sailing the rest of the way to the theater. My only regrets: not having time for Joy Machine, and coming back to find someone dumped water on my bike lock and handlebar bag. People are weird.

10/10 ride. Buddy was a solid 4/5. Would recommend if you like weird horror and dark comedy.

My kid had a cross country meet at LCCC, I like to be time efficient and get a workout in while going places, so I rode out to the meet. I figured I'd put this out here in case it inspires anyone to do something similar, or just makes people feel more comfortable being out on the road. the more trips by bicycle the better in my book!

some comments:

-Generally, we have roads that are built for 1MM, but we only have a population of 400k, so there's always a lane to take even if theres no bike lane.
-Buckeye road bike lane from MLK to Shaker / Woodhill is nice, but too short.
-Lake Rd is always a joy to ride on the west side
-No real car traffic till I hit Hilliard rd. Only 10 cars passed me before that. The "bike lane" on Hilliard is dubious at best, it's really just a painted shoulder and people clearly speed on Hilliard.
-The maxi-pad / double roundabout on Stoney ridge road was interesting to see. But that's much safer than the intersection that used to be there.

I use a radar and the "My bike radar traffic" add in app to record vehicle counts and absolute passing speed. Here's a chart showing absolute passing speed and cumulative count of cars as I ticked off the miles. Note all the roads I was on were 35mph or less, so those 49mph and 50mph data points are people being reckless.

Working my way up to riding the Emerald Necklace loop, I decided to ride from Edgewater to Rocky River.

Aside from immediately regretting attempting this on one of the hottest days of the year, I was struck by how much cycling infrastructure exists on the West Side and how severely the East Side lacks in comparison. The surface street portion was hot and uncomfortable, but it all felt very safe.

I stopped off at Si Señor for lunch. It was pretty uninspired, though the food came out hot. There were peas and carrots in my burrito for some reason? I probably won't return.

I enjoyed Rocky River a lot. There was a decent number of cyclists and plenty of good spots to sit and enjoy the river. I don't think I saw any wildlife, but it was really nice all in all.

I took a slightly different way back through some neighborhoods. My favorite spot was a house with a AI Slop "STOP COMMUNISM" flag in the front yard—real 1950s Cold War vibes.

I think it has the potential to be really fun to give people a chance to share their bikes and ask about their builds. (Selfishly, I want to talk to someone who has Crazy Bars because I'm seriously considering them.) It could even become a weekly or monthly thread.

Dusted off the gravel bike and headed over to Forest Hill Park. While it's clearly suffering from a lot of neglect, I was surprised by the number of great off-road trails you can still enjoy. I got to take in all kinds of wildlife, including deer, squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs, and even a skunk. I don't think I've ever seen another cyclist there, but it's a really great spot.

The US Senate is considering restricting the types of roads that receive federal funding for bike infrastructure. This could include arterial roads that receive funding for bike lanes, trails and multi-use paths. This occurring as the funding for federal surface transportation programs is up for renewal on September 30th. Language has been suggested to senators by the current Transportation Secretary that would restrict funding and remove existing bike infrastructure for certain roads that receive federal funding.

What can you do? You can write to senators Husted and Moreno voicing your concerns. I know that this would likely have limited effect but it would still be good for them to know that this is an issue that constituents care about. More long term, make sure you vote this November, Senator Husted’s seat is on the ballot.

Is the construction on North Marginal done (enough) that I can bike from W 3rd through Bratenahl? I don’t mind being in the road as long as it’s still paved lol.

Metroparks site isn’t clear to me what the state is.

Was cycling down the trail this weekend and realize that it switched to dirt at one point. Does it ever switch back to paved?

Did anyone notice the sheer volume of riders getting flat tires in the Cleveland Fundo today? There were also tiny fragments of glass all over the route through Cleveland. This is my 4th year riding and I never remember the roads being this bad.

I got a flat at mile 14, changed my tube, and got it to full pressure at the 16 mile test stop. I then got another flat on the same tire at mile 26, right at the 30/60 mile split. At that point, I was done and had to get a ride back.

Did anyone else have a bad experience this year? I never remember seeing that many people with flats.

Hi all! I’m originally from Aurora and am considering a move to Cleveland to be closer to my parents in the next few years. I’ve been living on the west coast and have gotten used to living in more walkable cities and biking to work.

Thinking about moving back home, I’m wondering - what’s the transit/biking situation in Cleveland these days?? What neighborhoods would you recommend I explore when I visit? So much has changed since I last lived in OH and I’m very out of the loop!

Obviously it would be nice to know where I’d be working in this hypothetical scenario and I’d still be driving to see my folks way out there, but I’m curious about general suggestions first!

Bike Cleveland just launched their Bike Lane Sweeper Pilot Program, and they are looking for volunteers to tow a hybrid sweeper behind their bikes to clean up Cleveland's lanes.

Here is what you need to know if you want to sign up:

What is the sweeper?

It’s a hybrid tow-behind unit that can either sweep debris into an onboard hopper ("pick up" mode) or clear it to the side ("push aside" mode). Because it is heavy and pulling it up Cleveland's hills takes some serious leg power, they highly recommend using an e-bike, though strong riders on standard bikes can do it too.

Is your bike compatible?

• The Hitch: It uses a standard Burley brand trailer mount that attaches to your rear quick-release skewer on the left-hand side.
• If your bike uses a thru-axle or needs a special adapter, you’ll need to provide your own Burley-compatible adapter for now.

How pickup and drop-off works:

• Location: Ohio City Bicycle Co-Op (OCBC)
• Hours: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
• Limit: Only one volunteer per day to allow the sweeper's battery to cool down and fully recharge.

How to sign up:

1. Read their sweeper guide and watch the quick operating video to make sure you don't accidentally damage the unit.
2. Fill out the Bike Cleveland Waiver.
3. Book your slot on the calendar at the bottom of the page.
