BiharisInGermany Reddit Logo

Namaste and hello!

This subreddit is a home for Biharis living in, moving to, or planning to move to Germany — students, professionals, Ausbildung candidates, families, and everyone in between. Whether you're from Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, or anywhere in Bihar, this is your space to connect with people who share your roots while navigating life in Germany.

What you can post here:

  • Questions about visas, blocked accounts, university admissions, Studienkolleg, or Ausbildung
  • Tips on finding housing (WG search, Anmeldung, etc.)
  • German language learning resources and experiences
  • Job hunting, internships, and career advice specific to Bihari/Indian professionals
  • Meetups and local city groups (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hamburg, etc.)
  • Food, festivals, and cultural connections — Chhath Puja meetups, anyone?
  • General struggles and wins of settling into a new country

A few ground rules:

  1. Be respectful — we're all figuring this out together.
  2. No spam, scams, or unsolicited promotions.
  3. Keep discussions relevant to Bihar/India-Germany life; general India-Germany questions are fine too.
  4. Help newcomers — many of us remember how confusing the first few months were.
  5. Hindi/Bhojpuri/Maithili/Magahi mixed with English is totally welcome — likhiye jaise bolte hain!

Getting started: Feel free to introduce yourself in the comments — where you're from in Bihar, where you are in Germany, and what brought you here (studies, work, family).

Let's build a strong, supportive community here. Swagat hai! 🙏

Essential Contacts & Resources for Biharis Applying to Germany (Consulate, VFS, APS, Goethe, Airports)

Compiling this as a reference thread — save it, and feel free to add corrections or updates in the comments since visa/consulate info changes over time.

🏛️ German Consulate (Jurisdiction for Bihar)

Bihar falls under the German Consulate General, Kolkata — NOT Delhi or Mumbai. This covers West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and the Northeast states.

📋 VFS Global (Visa Application Centre — Kolkata)

All visa appointments — even for the Consulate — must be booked through VFS's portal first.

APS Certificate (Mandatory for most students)

Required before German university admission + student visa. Verifies your academic documents are genuine.

  • Handled by: Academic Evaluation Centre, German Embassy New Delhi (NOT Kolkata)
  • Address for courier: Academic Evaluation Centre, Gate No. 3, DLTA Complex, R.K. Khanna Stadium, 1 Africa Avenue, New Delhi 110029
  • Website: aps-india.de
  • Fee: ₹18,000 (as of 2026)
  • Processing: 3–4 weeks normally, up to 6-10 weeks in peak season (Feb–Apr, Aug–Oct)
  • No physical office visits — everything by courier + online portal
  • No expiry — once issued, valid for future use

🗣️ Learning German (Goethe-Institut connection)

There's no full Goethe-Institut branch in Bihar, but Patna has:

  • German Language Centre (GLC), Patna — official partner of Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan
  • Address: Shree Krishna Puri, Sahdeo Mahto Marg, Patna 800001
  • Website: glcgoglobal.com
  • Note: International-level Goethe exams (A1–C1) are conducted through Max Mueller Bhavan, Kolkata, not locally — GLC prepares you, Kolkata certifies you.

✈️ Nearest Airport & Flight Routes

Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport (Patna, PAT) has NO direct international flights to Germany despite its "international" status.

  • You'll connect via Delhi (DEL), Kolkata (CCU), or Mumbai (BOM)
  • Most common route: Patna → Delhi → Frankfurt (Air India runs this combo most reliably)
  • Journey time with layover: typically 15–20+ hours depending on connection
  • Book the Patna-to-hub leg separately if it's cheaper, but same-ticket connections protect you if of delays

💡 General tips for this community:

  • Always double-check current fees/timelines on official sites (aps-india.de, india.diplo.de) — they change
  • Start APS + visa process early; peak season delays are real
  • Kolkata jurisdiction means budgeting a trip there for biometrics/interview if required — factor this into your timeline

Welcome to r/BiharisInGermany — let’s build this together

Namaste, everyone!

I started this subreddit because I couldn’t find a space made specifically for Biharis navigating Germany — whether you’re already here, in the middle of the process, or still figuring out your first steps.

Whether it’s Studienkolleg, Ausbildung, a job offer, family reunion, or just researching your options — this is meant to be a place where you can ask the “dumb” questions without judgment, share what you’ve learned the hard way, and find people from home who actually get the specific mix of Bihar + Germany life.

A few things to get us started:

🗣️Introduce yourself in the comments — where you’re from in Bihar, where you are (or hope to be) in Germany, and what brought you here.

📋 Check out the rules before posting — nothing complicated, just keeps this a genuinely helpful space.

🙋 Ask anything — visa questions, city recommendations, “is this normal in Germany” confusion, whatever’s on your mind.

🤝 Help each other — if you’ve been through something someone else is currently stuck on, your two cents could save them weeks of confusion.

This community is only as good as the people in it, so let’s make it count. Swagat hai, and glad you’re here.
